Happy New Year's Eve

I don't have anything charmingly witty or indelibly profound to say. And I'm not doing a recap of the whole year. Stuff happenend. I lived through it. 'Nuff said there.

But there are two things that made 2006 very special to me.

The first began in January when I heard a gravelly whiskey tenor, telling me that a change was gonna come. I believed it. And I was hooked on Taylor Hicks from that moment. It took me until April to officially join the online Soul Patrol. But I was a memeber of this fanbase from that Vegas audition. I just didn't know there were other people like me. I had no idea at that time that I would make so many lasting friendships. But I thank Taylor for that.

The second thing happened in June. I was at the gym, doing my best to work on my knees. She walked behind me, made a joke, and thumped me on the back of the head. Well, in the six months since then she's learned that I'm not such a wimp - the knees are just bad and I do the best I can with what I have. And I've been trying to figure out what the hell I did before I met her.

So it's been a great year for me. I don't know how things can get better in 2007. But I'm open for anything at this point.

Have a safe and sane celebration. For those of you going out, watch out for the amateurs. If you drink, get a designated driver or call a cab. If you're staying home, snuggle up with the ones you love and raise a toast.

**tosses flaming walnuts and mounds of confetti**

See ya on the other side gang!!

13 Things The Women In My Life Have Taught Me

1. To own my decisions, for better or worse

2. That tears are natural

3. That you can either ask for help, or hang the picture crooked

4. That I don't have to become my father

5. That honor is in the act of service rather than the type of service

6. That sometimes a smile and a hug is enough

7. To be attentive and kind

8. To look for the words, to offer them with tact and compassion, and to remain silent when there are no words

9. To be silly

10. To love sport and competition

11. To respect and to trust

12. That what gets broken can be mended in the fullness of time

13. That two halves of the same whole can find each other

Former President Gerald Ford (1913-2006)

I just saw on the news that former President Gerald Ford has died at the age of 93. I must say that this news has shocked me. I wasn't aware that he had been ill. But I suppose that, at 93 years, I shouldn't be surprised.

Mr. Ford is unique in the history of the American Presidency because he is the only President not to be elected to his office. In December 1973, Mr. Ford was confirmed in the office of Vice President, replacing Spiro Angew, who was forced to resign after pleading no contest to income tax evasion charges. In August 1974, Mr. Ford was sworn in as President after Mr. Nixon was forced to resign or face impeachment after the Watergate scandal.

Mr. Ford's early political service included participation in the Warren Commission after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He also served as minority leader of the House of Representatives.

Please be aware that established protocol is to fly the American flag at half mast for 30 days upon the death of a President. If you are unable to fly a flag at half mast, protocol suggests that three black mourning bows be attached to it, one at each corner and one in the center. These rules can be viewed at http://www.gettysburgflag.com/FlyFlagHalfMast.php.

So, the other day Bond told me to write words. Since I don't have any new words at the moment, I've decided to dig once again into what I've written in the past. These are 13 story beginnings. The stories themselves are at various stages, the most common of which is unfinished. Even the finished stuff still needs work.

1. "Once upon a time, there lived a Beautiful Princess named Tonya, who lived in a Pink Castle high atop Cheesy Eesy Mountain in Yesumay Land." This is from a story called A Quest for Special Friends. I wrote it many years ago for the children of a friend of mine. It's one of the few things I've finished.

2. "A quarter of a mile from the house was a rush of water called Cache Creek, which meandered through a grove of cottonwood trees. It was a perfect place for a boy to spend his summer days, thinking about everything and nothing." This is from an unfinished story about. . .yup, a boy.

3. "The air was crisp and cool as the four rode deliberately into town. A sudden, wintry wind whipped down the street, snapping open one man's coat and threatening the perch of another's hat. A third man rode slumped in his saddle, listing to his right, as though a weight pressed down on one shoulder. The fourth rider led a string of five horses." This begins an unfinished story called Bounty, about redemption.

4. "All of my friends had real bikes. Mine had tires, a seat, and handle bars, and it was real. It didn't disappear when you put your hand on it. But the tires weren't rubber. I mean, they were rubber, but it was the hard, inflexible kind. The kind that didn't need tubes on the inside. Of course, they never went flat, but the stupid thing didn't look like everybody else's. It had plastic white rims without spokes, just a couple of bars that criss crossed through the center and kept the wheels from falling off the forks. Not even mag bars, which would have been half way cool. Just two white bars. It had fenders which my dad refused to remove. It was a pukey green color. The handle bars were deep forks, and the seat was banana shaped. It screamed "I am a goober geek head" whenever I rode it. I made sure that wasn't very often." This is from something unfinished that I like to call Life 101. I've actually got something of an outline for this one, and if I worked at it I could probably finish it.

5. "A friend called me today to tell me of the death of a mutual aquaintance. It took me several moments to decide whether I cared." OK, this comes from a dark place and is unfinished.

6. "It is easy to get everything you want, provided you first learn to do without the things you cannot get." Hmmmmm. That's it. It's just a sentence in a word document, saved under the title The Mask of Fate.

7. "Kalfan peered from between the branches of the tree, and spied a yellow haired young Human woman sitting on a split log. He knew less than many of his Elven brethren regarding Humans, however Kalfan did know enough to recognize that this one was crying." This is from a short story called The Yuletide Star. It's finished, but needs quite a bit of tweaking.

8. "The classroom bell rang, and another boring school day ended for Alex McNally. He trudged with heavy shoulders into the hallway and jostled his way through the crowded corridor to his locker. The combination lock was jammed as usual. A sharp rap with his fist forced the troublesome mechanism. The teenager transferred an assortment of books and crinkled paper from the locker to his backpack. He slung the worn straps carelessly across his shoulders and slammed the locker door shut." This is from another finished short story called True Reality. It's actually more of a novella and it needs updating - some of the references are to 15 year old technology.

9. "He let the euphoria wash over him like a wave caresses a beach. The victim, a young attractive male, slid from his grasp to rest on the cold alley pavement." Now this is one I'd like to finish. It's a story about sacrifice.

10. "Scott McKay absently pedalled his mountain bike down Old Seaver Road, coasting along at a reasonbale pace. Suddenly, the bike took control of itself. Scott couldn't turn and he couldn't stop. He couldn't even jump off. It was as if the bicycle had been possessed, by what Scott decided he'd rather not know. After realizing and accepting his inability to immediately affect his speed or direction, for whatever reason, his awareness turned to the busy intersection only moments ahead." Now that's a clunky paragraph.

11. "Charlie and Darrin walked across the hot sand. The sun was bright and a few thin clouds floated lazily in the high sky. It was too hot to breathe. Darrin's complaints were a constant drone in Charlie's ears. Darrin had misplaced his sunglasses. Charlie's patience had run its course. He had his own glasses, new Oakleys he bought with money from his paper route. He refused to share." This is from a finished short story called Tea At High Noon.

12. "It was a dark and silly night. The Bunny was hopping." This is a little something I just started working on, called Fuzzy Bunny Investigations and The Case of The Mysterious Chat Silences. Lots of inspiration but very little progress.

13. "Brant McCord sat motionless in his saddle, the leaves of a large maple tree rustling in gentle protest to a sudden wispy breeze. Man and equine were indistinct, blending thoroughly with their surroundings, waiting patiently for the signal." This is from my novel Outlawed. The book is perhaps 40% complete.

And there you have it. The beginnings of 13 of my stories - and in a couple of cases, the merest hint of a potential story.

Six Weird Things

Posted: by Travis Cody in
9

My new friend Tiggerprr tagged me for this. I don't think I've done a weird things post yet.

First, the rules. Each player of this game starts with the “6 weird things about you”. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave a comment that says “you are tagged” in their comments and tell them to read your blog.

So. . .

Thing #1 that is weird about me is that I have kept every edition of Sports Illustrated magazine since 1983. Don't ask me why. I'm weird that way.

Thing #2 that is weird about me is that I alphabetize everything. Music, books, DVD's. Give me more that 2 things and I'll put them in alphabetical order.

Thing #3 that is weird about me is that I'll watch the occasional chick flick - by choice.

Thing #4 that is weird about me is that I'll make an entire meal out of mashed potatoes. I like Idahoan brand Loaded Baked or Four Cheese. Just add water and microwave for 4 minutes - instant dinner!

Thing #5 that is weird about me is that I keep several reference books around me - I'm talking right next to me - wherever I sit. I keep a dictionary, a thesaurus, a book of quotes, and a language usage text where I can get my hands on them.

Thing #6 that is weird about me is that I can't sleep with the covers tucked in. Sheets, blankets, comforters - everything has to be untucked. When I sleep in a hotel, I gotta pull the sheets and blankets out.

There you have it. I am certifiably weird.

Now for who to tag. Hmmmm. Let's see. Who do I know that is weird?

1. Julie
2. Angell
3. Am
4. Lynn
5. Dana
6. Diana

Sunday Random Sports Thoughts

Somehow the end of the football season has snuck up on me. After this weekend there will only be 2 games left. My Raiders can finally put this painful debacle of a season behind them. Oddly enough, with their win over Pam's Seahawks on Thursday, the 49ers have a chance to go 8-8 and possibly win the NFC West. I'm keeping my excitement on simmer for the sake of peace in my apartment.

Terrell Owens: An athlete doesn't spit in another athlete's face. It is a cowardly act of disrespect. But I'm not surprised by the act of an immature child who apparently doesn't have any self-respect, let only respect for anyone or anything else. There is no excuse for this. And there are only so many apologies for a guy like Owens. At some point, a man has to step up and own his actions.

Nuggets vs Knicks: NBA brawls are patently ridiculous. And potentially dangerous. Nobody likes to get blown out and shown up on their home floor. But to play the game with the intent to injure another player - there is no way to spin that into anything other than a criminal act. Ever hear of a crime of passion that happens in the heat of the moment? People go to jail for those. Why should a vicious foul committed in the heat of the moment, and the ensuing fist fight it prompted, not be punished with arrests? When do we consider that on court behavior has crossed the line?

879 - That's the most wins ever by a college basketball coach. The record is held by Dean Smith. Texas Tech Coach Bob Knight can tie that record next Saturday, and surpass it soon after. Coach says, "It means I’ve coached a long time." Well, yeah. Winners normally get to stick around and win for a long time.

Do I need to feel sorry for Floyd Landis, the American cyclist who won the Tour de France last July but who immediately tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, suggesting the illegal use of performance enhancing substances? He claims he'll be exhonerated. He claims the tests were wrong and there is a legitimate explanation. He claims the scandal caused the death of his father-in-law. He claims his career is over because of the wrongful accusations. So I wonder, do I need to feel sorry for him? He appears to have cheated and he got caught. Life is like that sometimes.

The Phoenix Suns have won 14 straight games, which ties a franchise record for consecutive wins. They've surged to the lead in the Pacific Division. My Lakers are surging too, going 7-3 in their last 10. But it's tough to keep pace with a team as hot as the Suns. Ooops! No pun intended. Heehee.

I don't feel sorry for Allen Iverson. No matter what your opinion of his basketball skill, the guy has never had to learn that ultimately it has to be about the good of the team. When Philly was winning, his off court garbage and disrespectful attitudes toward his coach, teammates, and the organization were dismissed and forgiven. Not so much anymore. He's out in the cold and it's his own fault. It takes a certain amount of selfishness to become great at any professional sport. It takes a greater amount of maturity to funnel that selfishness into an attitude that allows you to work within a team and be a teammate. Iverson has never had that, and now he's paying for it.

I had great coaches and great teammates. I learned respect for the games I played. I learned sportsmanship. Don't kids get taught those things anymore? Playing a game at a high level of intensity should never mean that the players lose their basic humanity. I'm not naive - I understand that the pressure to win increases at every level of sport. But no amount of intensity should ever cause a player to lose sight of the man across the line from him. There's nothing like laying a hit on a guy and hearing the breath whoosh out of him. But there's no need to dance over him. It doesn't make me less of a man if I reach my hand down and help him up.

Well, aren't we just taking a pounding up here.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/home/index.html

If you watched the game last night between the 49ers and Seahawks, the pronouncers may have given you a false sense of what was happening to us weather-wise. We've been getting our dresses blown up over our heads y'all!!!

Most natives don't use umbrellas - it rains sideways here and the wind just yanks the things right out of your hands. We wear hoodies and tough it out.

Hurricane force gales have been uprooting trees, tearing roofs off buildings, and knocking out power to a reported one million customers in the Puget Sound area. We're getting walloped.

But we remain hearty folk. I'm one of the fortunate ones - I have power at home. My office building is out, so I've got another weather day. I'm spending it watching The West Wing season 7 on DVD.

Mother Nature does enjoy her little games though. After hellacious wind and rain over the last two days, I look out my window now and see a small patch of blue sky and calm. But the advance forecast looks like more rain is headed our way, and temperatures appear to be dropping. We could get more snow by Monday, or things could change again.

We won't know till we get there I guess.

These are modern conveniences I refuse to do without.

1. My Ipod - Well this one's obvious. I love music and I love having my whole music catalog with me all the time.
2. My Laptop - It didn't take long for me to become attached.
3. My Electric Razor - I hate razor burn.
4. My Cell Phone - It's the only personal phone I keep anymore. It does everything I need and I only have to remember one phone number. Plus it has a camera and one day I'll even figure out how to get the pictures out of the memory stick.
5. Wireless Internet - It gets installed on Dec 18 and I can't wait!!
6. A Cordless Mouse - Just got it over the weekend. I'll never go back now.
7. My DVD Player - Haven't moved on to Tivo yet. I have a little portable player I take on trips, although it will likely be retired in favor of the laptop.
8. Remote Controls - Oh yeah! For anything and everything.
9. Parking Garages - Why get wet if you don't have to?
10. TV Shows on DVD - Beats the hell out of trying to record all of The West Wing episodes off Bravo. And I can get most of my favorite shows from when I was a kid now. And the pressure is off if I miss a show I wanted to see.
11. Personal Weblogs - Uhm. . .I'm writing a Thursday 13 and you're reading it. . .'nuff said.
12. All Weather Tires - So far they've only failed me once. . .when I was unable to get any traction on a 4" think sheet of ice in the drive of my apartment complex.
13. Bottled Water - Yes, I can drink the water out of my tap. But bottled water tastes fresher and it's convenient - no glass required.

I came across an interesting musing while cruising the internet tonight.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16114818/

According to the Associated Press in this article, "adult" music has been steadily taking control of Top 40 radio and Billboard charts over the past 5-7 years. It's interesting reading. I hope it's true. I enjoy new young talent, but the key is whether they are talented. My musical ear has been subjected to questionable manufactured music for so long.

It's not that I mind the manufactured sound. It's just that so much has been centered around the "show" instead of the music. Kids have been recruited based on their dancing ability first - it didn't matter whether they could sing. We'd get lucky if they could.

Uhm. . .I can't see dancing on my radio!!!! I don't watch music videos in my car!!!! I want good music on my radio. Failing that, I go to the Ipod and listen to my own catalog of good music.

Now, the article does warn of a possible new "teen" music resurgence. Let's hope these young performers are talented musicians, and not just cute kids who can dance. Let's hope they can get on a stage in front of a real audience and sing, rather than be forced to lip sync because their producers have decided they need to bounce around the stage in order to entertain.

Oh my - when did I become old intolerant guy?!?!?!?!?!

Wait - I'm not intolerant guy. I'm not a music snob. I guess we all pine for the music and musicians of our own era and experience. I've become interested in new music again. I'm easing into it, thanks to new friends I've made over the last 11 months.

Bring it on, I say. Let's start with the new release from Taylor Hicks!!! Just one more day to wait for it.

A Moment in Time

Well gang - it's finally happened. Something has made it through this writer's block.

At This Moment

At this moment I am alive
Her smile brings respite
From the long lonely night

At this moment I am warm
Her touch deepening the love
Reflected in my eyes

At this moment I am free
As our passions quicken
Entwined in a charmed embrace

At this moment I am joy
As the sum of our love ignites
Like fire on arid grass

At this moment I am tranquil
Bathed in the afterglow
Of life, warmth, freedom, and joy

At this moment I am serene
Safe in the sweet tender mercy
Of a timeless love

Not likely to shake the earth, but new words nonetheless.

It's been a long day, but I can finally say that my laptop is now performing as advertised.

I spent the evening based at FBB. Then I made several reconnaisance forays to blogs and email and other sites. All went well. Internet Explorer didn't crash once.So tomorrow I'm off to Fry's to shop for wireless internet, a USB memory device so I can move some files from the old PC, and perhaps a cordless mouse.

Oh yeah, gotta catch up on some neglected reading and writing this weekend too.

Pear Harbor Remembrance

Posted: Thursday, December 07, 2006 by Travis Cody in
11

It's December 7 and my Thursday 13 is in remembrance of:

1. My grandfather, who lied about his age so he could join the Merchant Marine.

2. The 1,177 men who went down with the USS Arizona.

3. The additional 1,158 service personnel killed during the attack.

4. The 68 civilians killed during the attack.

5. The 1,178 military personnel and civilians wounded during the attack.

6. Rescue and medical personnel who braved oil slicks and searing heat to pull victims to safety and render first aid and comfort.

7. The numerous and varied acts of heroism above and beyond the call, such as Ship's Cook Third Class Dorie Miller USN, who carried many of his wounded shipmates to safety and attempted to rescue his mortally wounded Captain. Then he manned a 50 caliber Browning anti-aircraft gun for which he had never been trained.

8. The crew of the USS Nevada, who managed to get their battleship underway during the attack and tried to steam out of harm's way, ultimately running aground in order to avoid being sunk in the middle of the harbor.

9. The pilots and service crews who were able to get a few P-40's and P-36's off the ground from Haleiwa airfield. These planes engaged enemy aircraft and shot down as many as 11, losing 4 of their own.

10. Navy and civilian salvage crews, who worked for more than 20,000 hours on over 5,000 dives. Their efforts helped put 11 ships back into service from 1942 through 1944. They were also able to re-float 4 sunken battleships, which were ultimately returned to service and saw action against Japan later in the war.

11. All veterans of the Pearl Harbor attacks. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16081690/

12. To all who performed above and beyond the call in the early morning hours of December 7, 1941, and in the subseqent days leading to August 15, 1945 when Japan surrendered and World War II came to an end, I offer my deepest respect and gratitude.

13. "Yesteray, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Congress, Dec 8 1941.

Dangit!! Stoopid Dell didn't put my apartment number on the shipping label. I could have had the thing on Saturday!! But nooooooooooooooooo!

So I called today and straightened the whole thing out. They'll bring it tomorrow and leave it at the office. So - if all goes according to plan - tomorrow I'll have my new laptop and Travis will live happily ever after.

OK - maybe that's just a tad melodramatic. But hey - I'm working on a 9gig, 8 year old machine here!

So let's all do our chanting and burn our incense so nothing goes wrong tomorrow and my new laptop can be waiting for me when I get home from work.

**runs outside real quick, turns around three times, and spits**

There. That oughta do it.

A lot of little things - yeah, A LOT of them!

Darkness of self

I was having a great day. I finally got my emails caught up at work. The ice is mostly gone and I'm not sliding around the place anymore. It wasn't as cold today. It was Friday.

Taylor was on Leno.

And then something happened. I let a stranger's words hurt me. I let those words cut me in a raw place. They rubbed against a nerve and stung me.

Maybe the person who said the things I found hurtful wasn't having such a good day. Maybe I shouldn't be so sensitive. Maybe I should be more understanding and forgiving. Maybe. . .

Dammit. . .there are dark places that shouldn't be exposed by the hurtful words of strangers. I don't care whether the insult was unintentional. I don't feel particular charitable right now.

Words are power. So I'll crawl into some of my own. This poem is special to me. I wrote it many years ago. It speaks of confusion and fear, and wondering if these things can be overcome. It suits the place to which my mind ran tonight, to escape the words of a stranger.

DARKNESS OF SELF

On the far side of nothing is a darkness
chased there by a dream,
And held fast by a vision of new love,
buoyed by a breath of nature and cast
Upon the winds of nurturing fire,
faced by a bravery ne'er to be cowed.

Is dark denied dominion o'er self?

When shadows creep upon sunlit walk,
fear not the narrowing of light but
Embrace the cool shade and know it.
Blackest night can ne'er penetrate lighted soul
With false dimness; only by self will
may unfettered darkness intrude.

But is dark denied dominion o'er self?

Pin pricks of star light blink and glisten
'gainst velvety smooth night shades,
Measuring the either/or of decision.
To be in a field of shadow no lover;
Is this to gain a say in love,
or to choose against joy in faithless pain?

Will dark be denied dominion o'er self?

Trueness to a dream exists more or less
in bodiless trails of thoughts in kind,
E'er in motion 'gainst deft deed.
Matched side by side in duty perpetual,
Controlled in deed and decision by
necessities of the most noble of causes.

When is dark denied dominion o'er self?

On a cold day in hottest hell, fighting all
manner of foul demons of mind,
Self-created, self-empowered, self-released.
Only when love is accepted in respect for
Its own, as e'er was extended,
and a door forever slammed comes burst asunder,

Then is dark denied dominion o'er self.
