Bill Walsh (1931-2007)

Bill Walsh was one of my football heroes. He died yesterday of leukemia, at the age of 75. I've discovered that I can't actually write about this yet. I feel like I've lost someone I knew. Maybe that's melodramatic, but it's the truth.

John Madden and the Oakland Raiders of the 1970's helped spark my love of the physical side game of football. I learned how to be fearless from that team.

But Coach Walsh, along with Joe Montana and the rest of the San Francisco 49ers who began the dynasty of the 1980's, taught me the subtleties of the game. This was the team that helped me through the worst of missing football after injury took it away.

The Raiders through the 80's, with guys like Howie Long, reminded me of the way I used to play with abandon. But Coach Walsh and the 49ers showed me how to appreciate really watching football. As much as anything else, that helped me truly heal.

That's really all I can say now. If you're interested in checking out what Coach Walsh contributed to the game, here are some links to check out.

Mo's Manic Monday - Miss

Posted: by Travis Cody in

Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Today's theme is Miss. Don't forget to drop by MM HQ at It's A Blog Eat Blog World.

At first I wondered what I could post for the word Miss. But then I realized this was the perfect time to post the second chapter of my children's story, A Quest for Special Friends. You can find the link to chapter one if you scroll down my sidebar to the Stories section.

Oh alright...I'll make it easy. You can click here to go directly to chapter one.

Ready now? Good! Here's chapter two of A Quest for Special Friends.

Sir Michael was a Gallant Knight, whose duty in Yesumay Land was to protect the Beautiful Princess Tonya from all manner of beasts and other threatening creatures. If the Princess was frightened, it was Sir Michael’s job to reassure her and chase away the scaries. If she was worried, it was his job to find the cause of her distress and thrash it soundly for upsetting the Princess. And if Princess Tonya was in need of an escort for one of her many glorious parties, then it was Sir Michael’s happy duty to be that escort.

Without Sir Michael, Princess Tonya might not be able to work up a sufficient number of Smiles to keep the Land of Yesumay bathed in sweet sunshine. It was a very important position, and one which Sir Michael the Gallant took quite seriously.

Sir Michael sat alone in his room in the Blue Castle. His castle was located across the valley from the Pink Castle of Princess Tonya. If Sir Michael looked out his window, he could see the tower of the Pink Castle that held Princess Tonya’s window, the one from which she Smiled upon Yesumay Land. Sir Michael loved to awaken early, just before sunrise, so he could be one of the first things upon which the Beautiful Princess Smiled. It often made him blush, to think of himself so, but he couldn’t help himself. He loved the Princess more than anyone else in the land.

Because he loved the Princess so, he had closed up his castle against the world outside and turned his back from the window so he didn’t have to see the Pink Castle. Everyone else was getting ready for the celebration. Sir Michael had heard the news of Erik the Wonderful’s victory over the mackerel fish, and he was every bit as pleased that the ordeal was over, but he could not bring himself to the excitement necessary to be Princess Tonya’s escort for the celebration banquet.

Sir Michael could not join the feasting, partly because he was jealous. He had battled the mackerel fish for a week, but had been unable to defeat it or drive it away. Finally, at a loss and embarrassed by his failures, he had slunk away to his Blue Castle, unable to bear the sight of his Princess and her tears.

When he had returned to his castle, he had looked for his Special Friend, hoping that Biff Bear would make him feel better. But, Biff Bear was nowhere to be found. Sir Michael searched everywhere he could think. He searched in all the closets and under every bed, through the drawers and behind the drapes. He even drained the milk pond behind the castle. No Biff Bear anywhere.

Sir Michael turned his Blue Castle upside down in his search. When the poor maids complained that this made it too difficult for them to clean the floors, he turned the castle right side up and admitted his loss. He immediately retired to his room after ordering the castle closed. He hadn’t spoken to a soul in two days.

He had heard reports of others who had lost their Special Friends. He had considered this the product of careless behavior, and endeavored to take extra special care not to be guilty of such irresponsibility concerning one of the more important things in his life. But, to no avail. Biff Bear was lost.

Suddenly, Sir Michael lifted his head. He had heard his name called, and the voice that called him was filled with great despair.

The Gallant Knight could not ignore anyone in distress. He went to his window to discover the source of such terrible sadness. He looked down and saw that it was the Great Magician Himself.

“Mr. Fixit,” called Sir Michael. “Why are you so upset? You’ve defeated the mackerel fish and made the Beautiful Princess Tonya happy again. You should be at the Pink Castle, celebrating your victory.”

“No, Sir Michael,” wailed the Great Magician Himself. “Something horrible has happened. Something more awful than a whole school of rotten mackerel fish!”

“What is it? No, don’t tell me. Come inside. Wait, I’ll open the door.”

Sir Michael turned from the window and strode to his bed, thinking to bring Biff Bear with him for moral support. That was when he understood. He remembered how desperately alone he had felt when he first discovered that Biff Bear was missing. Suddenly, he knew why the Great Magician Himself was so sad.

Sir Michael hurried down the stairs of the tower to open the door for Erik the Wonderful, his sympathy growing as well as his suspicions. An idea was forming about these strange disappearances.

“Come in, come in Mr. Fixit,” Sir Michael spoke soothingly to the poor magician, putting an arm around his shoulders and guiding him to a stuffy fluffed chair in the front room. “Tell me all about it.”

“Well,” began the Great Magician Himself, sniffling a little and rubbing his nose against his sleeve. “I knew it might get hectic fighting the mackerel fish, so I decided to leave Mr. Fuzzy Blanket at home in my Red Castle. So many things get spilled in a kitchen, you know, and tuna fish can make a terribly oily stain.”

Sir Michael nodded gravely. He understood the magician’s reluctance to put his Special Friend in danger of becoming stained.

“Anyway,” continued the Great Magician Himself. “After we defeated the mackerel fish, Princess Tonya declared a holiday, and announced a huge feast in my honor, me being the one who fixed the can opener.”

Erik the Wonderful paused to look shyly at the Gallant Knight. “I’m sorry about that Sir Michael. I know you’re supposed to fight Princess Tonya’s battles and everything. I guess this time it needed more than strength and armor to do the job. I hope you’re not angry that someone else gets the Princess’ Smiles for awhile.”

The Knight laughed. “I’m glad she’ll be smiling at you, Mr. Fixit Toolman. You look like you could use it.”

The Great Magician Himself suddenly remembered why he had come, and he nearly burst into tears. His lower lip quivered. “Oh, Sir Michael! I went back to the Red Castle to change my pockets for the banquet, but something dreadful had happened. Mr. Fuzzy Blanket was gone, and so were all the other Special Friends of everyone who lives at the Red Castle!”

Sir Michael nodded his head, sharing the magician’s grief and horror. He had suspected as much, and he knew what had probably happened and who was behind the dastardly deed.

“The same thing has happened here at the Blue Castle, Mr. Fixit. We must hurry to the Pink Castle to warn the Princess. I think you can guess what will happen to all of Yesumay Land if Kesra the Gnome should go missing.”

Sir Michael the Gallant jumped up. The need to protect his Beautiful Princess consumed him and galvanized him to action. Erik the Wonderful charged right behind him, glad for something constructive to do. Both had forgotten for the moment their own grief at the loss of their Special Friends. The one thing that mattered most was to protect Princess Tonya and Kesra the Gnome. Otherwise, an even greater disaster than that caused by the mackerel fish might befall Yesumay Land.

Sir Michael and the Great Magician Himself hurried through the back door of the Blue Castle and rushed to a large tent next to the empty milk pond. Purring sounds could be heard and as the two drew closer, the ground seemed to stir beneath their feet. Approaching the tent, Sir Michael stopped to open a large box that contained pieces and parts of armor that might be useful. He pulled these on, and took up his Great Spear and Mighty Shield. Thus armed, he motioned the Great Magician Himself to follow him inside the tent.

Erik the Wonderful knew what made the purring sound, and he was greatly heartened. He had never actually ridden Sir Michael’s wondrous steed, and he looked forward to it now as the rare treat that it was. The Great Magician Himself was so involved in his anticipation, that he did not watch where he walked, and so he bumped into something warm and soft.

“Pardon me,” he said politely.

A bright round eye opened and batted itself, then a pink tongue darted between twitching whiskers. Erik the Wonderful stumbled back, startled. The purring had grown quite loud. The huge cat was amused.

“Mount up, Mr. Fixit!” called Sir Michael from his perch atop the Great Cat. “Shelley’s all saddled up and ready to go.”

Shelley was a magical cat. She was as big as a small mountain, and gentle as a spring rain. She spent most of her time sleeping, since it took a great deal of energy to perform her amazing magical tricks. She could shrink to any size she needed to be. Or she could run as fast as a situation demanded. She could wink out of existence and appear in another place. And she could put an enemy to sleep by changing the sound and rhythm of her purring.

Mounted aboard the Great Cat Shelley, Sir Michael the Gallant and the Great Magician Himself would be at the Pink Castle in minutes, rather than the hours it would have taken them to walk. Erik the Wonderful wondered why Shelley couldn’t just disappear and reappear at the Pink Castle. Sir Michael explained that Shelley could do it, but only for herself. If she tried it with her two passengers, she would arrive at the Pink Castle, and they would probably end up sitting at the crusty bottom of the empty milk pond.

The Great Magician decided this was a risk better left alone.

Dance results and a Meme

Posted: Friday, July 27, 2007 by Travis Cody in

Neila at Blog That Mommy! tagged me for the three word meme. You can scroll down for my answers if dancing results aren't your thing.

But we do know that dancing results are my thing, so here's the scoop on tonight. I'm a little frustrated because I can't find a video of Lacey and Danny's Samba from Wednesday. Grrrrr. You'll have to take my word for it that Lacey was HAWT!

Tonight, the guy and gal with the lowest vote totals will be eliminated. We split our votes. We voted for Lacey because she was so damn good. Then we voted for Pasha because we think he might be in a little trouble after the solos. And then we voted a little bit for Sabra because she is such a joy.

I'm a veteran voter from the singing show that must not be named, so I understand that there's room for vote-splitting at the top 10. In about two more weeks, we'll have to make a firm commitment and throw our votes behind our choice for who we think should win. But for now, we can support Lacey and try to save Pasha for as long as possible, and still have a few votes for a dancer who catches our eye.

Got that? Good! Now for the show.

Very interesting opening dance choreographed by Mia Michaels.

Gals first for results, and Sabra is the first to be safe. Jaimie is a dancer in danger, while Lacey moves to safety. Sara is safe, which puts Lauren in danger. So it's Jaimie or Lauren who has the least votes and will be out.

Guys next, and Neil is safe along with Danny. Dominic is in danger along with Kameron, which leaves Pasha safe. So it's either Dom or Kam who will be out tonight.

Mia is flabbergasted by this bottom four. Mary wants to save everyone and says this is simply a bump in their careers. Evil Nigel is pleased to be off the hook for choosing who's safe and who's out, and reminds the dancers that they are on the summer tour.

Now the four dancers in danger will dance solos, for no other reason than to give us one more look at them. The result is the result.

Jaimie - Beautiful, technically outstanding
Dominic - Tremendous tricks, infectious personality, charming
Lauren - The most improved of the remaining ten dancers
Kameron - Confusing style

Who stays and who goes? Jaimie and Kameron are out, Lauren and Dominic move forward.

Here's Jaimie...

Kameron didn't have a solo until this week, so here he is with Lacey...

Dancers and writers

I made some progress visiting blogs last night, but I'm still pretty far behind. Bear with me while I catch up.

Those of you who are here to see another list of authors, just scroll on down past the dancing review. I think Thursday is big enough for both.

Judges tonight are Mary Murphy, the evil Nigel Lithgow, and the Emmy nominated Mia Michaels.

These are the 10 dancers that will be on the summer tour – Jaimie Goodwin, Dominic Sandoval, Sara VonGillern, Pasha Kovalev, Lauren Gottlieb, Neil Haskell, Sabra Johnson, Kameron Bink, Lacey Schwimmer, Danny Tidwell.

The judges no longer have the ability to save anyone. Tonight each dancer will dance the same peace-themed solo choreographed by Emmy nominated Wade Robson. The voting will now be for each individual dancer, and the guy and gal with the least amount of votes will be out.

As for pairs, the dancers are picking styles and partners out of hats now, splitting up the partnerships they have had through five weeks of competition.

To review, each dancer has the same Wade Robson solo and a partner dance. Then America votes for their favorites.

Lauren (contemporary jazz) and Pasha (ballroom) dance hip hop choreographed by Shane Sparks. That was really cool choreography. I expected Pasha to have trouble with it, but he really did well. I didn’t expect him to be that versatile. Lauren is terrific at this. They had fantastic chemistry and energy.

Jaimie dances her peace solo. I love the way she moves and controls her body. She is technically very good and her lines are so extended and polished.

Dominic dances his peace solo. This kid is so talented and he improves every week. He had great emotion and drama in that interpretation. He’s not the best dancer but he connects with voters, and this is about America’s favorite dancer.

Sabra (contemporary) and Kameron (contemporary hip hop) dance contemporary choreographed by Tyce Diorio. Kameron has become a tremendous partner and I really appreciate that about his dancing, but he’s really not stepping up as an individual. Sabra is able to shine as both a partner and an individual within the dance. She made that so joyous.

Sara dances her peace solo. This seemed like a manic interpretation. It was an angry dance.

Pasha dances his peace solo. Pasha is one of our favorites. He struggled with the expression of emotion. He’s been shining as a partner but on his own, not so much.

Lacey (swing and Latin) and Danny (classical ballet) dance Samba choreographed by Dimitry Chaplin, a finalist from last season. Sorry, can’t tell you a thing about Danny. Lacey was HAWT! This is her specialty – she’s a Latin champion. And she was fantastic. Wow that was impressive. Her technique is brilliant and her performance was dead on perfect. I’m no longer concerned for Danny in this competition. In fact, neither winning nor losing on this show is going to impact his career – he’s going to dance professionally for a long time.

Lauren dances her peace solo. Her movement was sharp, precise, and clean. Since that bad solo a few weeks ago, she has really improved in her preparation and commitment.

Neil dances his peace solo. He just seems to be able to hang in the air. His movement is controlled, but he’s still able to bring passion to it.

Sabra dances her peace solo. Her love for what she’s doing comes across in her movement. In this piece she danced with hope.

Kameron dances his peace solo. I looked for the deficiencies the judges pointed out, and I can see where his movement isn’t extended. He doesn’t finish what he’s doing before he moves on to the next step. But I thought he danced this with emotion.

Jaimie (contemporary) and Dominic (break dancer) dance Viennese Waltz choreographed by Toni Redpath. Her extension combined with his charm should make for a very good pair. Unfortunately this wasn’t a proper Viennese Waltz. It’s not really their fault because of the choices by the choreographer. The judges hated it. This was definitely tough for them. They didn’t have the technique and it was over-performed.

Lacey dances her peace solo. She’s versatile and strong and fantastic at everything she tries.

Danny dances his peace solo. He fills the stage. He is talented and technically brilliant.

Sara (break dancer) and Neil (contemporary) dance Disco choreographed by Doriana Sanchez. Disco isn’t my favorite style and I wish they would ditch it. I didn’t like the choreography and I didn’t like either one of their performances. The judges liked it.

Here are my rankings. I’m including my impressions from the whole season, as well as tonight’s performances.

1. Danny
2. Lacey
3. Sabra
4. Lauren
5. Neil
6. Jamie
7. Pasha
8. Dominic
9. Sara
10. Kameron

Some of my favorites have moved down the list. On the results show tonight we’ll see where the fans are falling. They won’t rank the dancers, but we’ll see who is connecting on their own with voters, and who may have benefited from a strong partner who was connecting enough for the pair in previous weeks.

Here's my quick hit Thursday 13 list of authors. For previous lists, click here.

1. Katherine Kurtz with Deborah Turner Harris - The Adept, The Lodge of the Lynx, the Templar Treasure, Dagger Magic
2. Katherine Kurtz with Scott MacMillan - Knights of the Blood
3. Stephen R. Lawhead - Taliesin
4. John LeCarre - The Russia House
5. Gaston Leroux - The Phantom of the Opera
6. C.S. Lewis - Chronicles of Narnia
7. Edward Linn - The Adversaries
8. Elizabeth A. Lynn - Watchtower, The Darkness of Arun
9. H.P. Lovecraft - At the Mountains of Madness
10. Robert Ludlum - The Apocalypse Watch, The Aquitaine Progression, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Chancellor Manuscript, The Gemini Contender, The Holcroft Covenant, The Icarus Agenda, The Matarese Circle, The Matlock Paper, The Osterman Weekend, The Parsifal Mosaic, The Road to Gandolfo
11. R.A. MacAvoy - The Book of Kells
12. Betty MacDonald - The Egg and I
13. T.J. MacGregor - Storm Surge

Eyes right y'all, and down a little I guess. I topped 5,000 visitors! Woooooooooooooooooooo!!! Thanks to those who have been cruising by from the early days, and thanks to those who have stumbled over to my place over the last few months.

I haven't got much time for posting or visiting this evening. Sorry about that. I'm taking care of a thing, and I hope to get back on track with visits soon.

We're down to the top 10 dancers this week. I'm thinking about starting full reviews through the end of the season. What do y'all think? Thursday should be big enough to hold dance reviews and TT author lists.

I'm a little irritated because I wanted the clip from last week's Top 12 Group dance from the results show. But I couldn't find it. I did find a Wade Robson routine from season two. So you get Zombies, starring last season's Top 10.

Check in on Thursday and see if we've got reviews and books!

Later babies!

A nice twist - Archive Meme

Posted: Tuesday, July 24, 2007 by Travis Cody in
13

Quick note: I didn't make it around to everyone's MM post yesterday. Sorry about that. I'll catch up as the week goes on.

This is the infamous Archive Meme, devised by Kyra and passed to me by Starrlight.

Starrlight says...

Kyra at The 108th has invented a brand new, fresh out of the oven Meme!

This is how it will work:

-Go back through your archives and post the links to your five favorite blog posts that you've written. ... but there is a catch:

Link 1 must be about family.
Link 2 must be about friends.
Link 3 must be about yourself, who you are... what you're all about...
Link 4 must be about something you love
Link 5 can be anything you choose.

Kyra thinks (and I agree) that this is a great way to circulate some of the great older posts everyone had written, return to a few great places in our memories and also learn a little something about ourselves and each other that we may not know.

Post your five links and then tag five other people. At least TWO of the people you tag must be newer acquaintences so that you get to know each other better.... and don't forget to read the archive posts and leave comments!

Now this is tough. I had to really search because I don't often write about family and don't get real personal. And I wanted to do the meme justice by choosing good posts. And what do you know? I found that I had been more open that I thought I had.

About Family - It is important to me to honor service. This post is about the men in my family who have served in the military. I have also learned from the women in my life that the honor is in the act of service as much as the kind of service. That's why I'm breaking the rules already and giving you another post About Family. Yup - I'm a rascal!

About Friends - This post is actually more FOR friends than about them. I was feeling silly and a little nostalgic back in February when I hit my 100th post. And while I was putting this meme together, I was thinking just today how extraordinary the last 15 months have been. I made real friends on a message board. You can scoff, but if you're reading this post then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Our online communities are every bit as real as the friends we can see and touch every day.

About Me - I really am not the kind of guy who lives in the past. My glory days are not all behind me. But football is so much a part of who I am. This particular post was both painful and joyful to write.

Something I love - Well, it's not something. It's someone and her name is Pam. I still remember the details of this like I was in the moment again.

Anything I choose - I write. I write poems and scenes and character sketches and actions. When I began this blog I was mired in a seriously debilitating case of writer's block. And although my novel still languishes unfinished, other words have come to me and many times I've shared them here.

I hope you enjoy this trip into the archives. I tried to find some posts that meant something to me, and that many of my newer visitors might not have seen the first time around.

I already broke the rules once in this meme, which is always very liberating and paves the way for more rule breaking. I don't really like to tag that often, so I'm only going to tag three other bloggers with this, instead of the requisite five as stated in the rules.

I suspect Kyra and Starrlight will appreciate my deviant behavior and punish me.

What?

Oh! I meant NOT punish me! Heehee!!

First off, I tag Shelby over at ...Time With Shelby, who is new to my daily blogging rounds.

Next I tag the delightful Sanni at Coffe 2 Go because she recently celebrated her bloggiversay and I know she has some fantastic posts in her archives.

And finally I tag Tammie Jean at Long Drives To Nowhere. I'm often mesmerized by the way TJ's memories unfold in beautiful, thought-provoking prose.

That's it. Take your time ladies.

Mo's Manic Monday - Wind

Posted: by Travis Cody in
25

Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Today's theme is Wind. Don't forget to visit MM HQ at It's A Blog Eat Blog World. And big thanks to Mo and Janna for their work on the varied Manic Monday banners.

I'm inspired by the word Wind, and I'm inspired by this Archive Meme with which I was tagged.

In service to both MM and Meme, I'm reaching back to November 2006 when I was an infant blogger. I published this poem in my fifth post. A friend of mine had been ripped and ridiculed for putting forth an unpopular opinion, and she had convinced herself that she had made a mistake not only in voicing the opinion, but in having it in the first place.

So I wrote about mistakes because we all make them. And I wrote about forgiving yourself, because sometimes we forget to tell ourselves it's ok.

It's too bad sometimes that the wind of popular opinion often blows so strongly in our faces that we feel the safer course is to bolt up the storm shutters and hunker down in the cellar.

So I posted this poem. As I wrote back when I first published the post, I guess the point or meaning of the poem is to act on life rather than waiting to let life act on you, because no matter what you do, life is gonna happen. Why not get out in front of it?

INDISCRIMINATE WINDS

When I move I lose focus
And the vision of who I am
Shimmers and blows away
Like a hot breeze whips desert sands

If I don't move at all
My life is a dune
Shapeless and insubstantial
Subject to the indiscriminate
Winds of change

Happy MM y'all!

Note: This post will be up through Sunday.

I was going to put up one of two meme posts I've been working on, but instead I want to honor my friend Dixie's son Matt. He leaves on Sunday to become a Marine.

I've never met this young man, but his choice to serve makes my heart swell with pride. Dixie has been understandably worried about her son. She has a mother's pride and love for her firstborn. She's not quite ready to let him go.

But she will. She'll hug him tight on Sunday, smooth his shirt over his shoulders as he stands tall. She'll hold his head still and look in his eyes, and tell him how proud she is and how much she loves him. She'll try not to cry and fail.

Matt will smile at his mom, a little embarrassed but understanding. He'll take her hands in his and squeeze them. He'll lean close and whisper in her ear, "I love you Mom". He'll grip her cheeks one last time, kiss her gently, and reassure her that he'll be fine. He'll shake his stepfather's hand, pick his little sister up in a bear hug. Then he'll turn back to his mom, say he loves her again, and off he'll go.

Matt - I'm proud of you and of your choice. I'm proud of your mom too.

“Please Visit Dixie and Matt and Wish Them Well As He Leaves For Parris Island And The Marines on Sunday, July 22, 2007.

Thanks to Vinny over at The Big Leather Couch for the mission.

The 8 things - Lucas style

Posted: Saturday, July 21, 2007 by Travis Cody in

Lucas is the most excellent author of one of the writing blogs I visit. At Through the Never you'll often find stories that will curl your toes, chill your blood, totally gross you out, or simply enchant you. You really never know with Lucas, which is why I return often to see what has escaped from his imagination.

This particular meme has been around awhile, but I like the idea of putting a new twist on it. Sort of like a theme within the meme. You know, I just found out this week that those two words - theme and meme - actually rhyme. I've been saying the word meme wrong all this time, rhyming it more with "hemi".

But now I've gone off on a tangent! Yikes! Let's get back to the task at hand, shall we?

In honor of Lucas, who tagged me for this more than a week ago, and in keeping with my commitment to a themed meme, I'm doing eight things that scare me.

1. Spiders.

2. I have an intense fear of drowning.

3. I've covered this fear by saying that I just don't like the sensation. But that's rubbish. The truth is that I have a fear of flying. It's not a debilitating fear because I will get on an airplane when it's required. But I'm still afraid of doing it.

4. I'm afraid of failure.

5. I'm not sure if I'm actually afraid of heights, but I get nervous and a little dizzy sometimes. I did ok looking out and down from The Empire State Building when I was in New York several years ago, but I couldn't look up at the rest of the tower from the observation deck. Is that weird? Oh...there's NO WAY you'd ever get me to walk out on this thing...

6. I'm afraid of a fire at my home. For those of you who have seen pictures of my library or read my Thursday 13 author lists, I think you'll understand.

7. My folks live out in rural southwestern Washington State, about 30 miles as the crow flies from Mt St Helens. I hit a deer with my vehicle one night driving out to their property. I have a fear of doing that again, which is why that road to their place is one of the few places that cures my lead foot.

8. With my rickety knees, I'm always afraid to take a bad step.

There we go. Now Lucas has a story he's posting in segments. It's called Ice Mountain. If you have some time, cruise on over and take a look. Here are links to the first segments.

Spoiler-free Zone

I just want to reassure my Harry Potter-reading blog friends that for the next month, this blog will be spoiler-free. I'm getting my book in just a few hours and as soon as I get home I'll be reading straight through. So I should know all by this time Saturday.

But I don't want to spoil it for anyone who doesn't have the time or opportunity to read through like me. Pam and I changed our plans for this evening because we didn't want to be out at dinner, or at the movies, and have it spoiled for us.

Paranoid and silly? Perhaps. It's only a children's book, right?

Well HARUMPH to you who may think so!! I've been waiting for this through six other books and five films. I'm entitled to enjoy the book without knowing how it ends.

So feel safe venturing here, all ye who want that as well. I'll not disappoint you. I'll simply post a message when I'm finished, saying I've finished. I will gladly discuss the book via email with anyone.

No public discussion about Harry Potter from me for 30 days.

Getting down to the top 10

This is the only possible encore I could choose from last night. This is Anya and Danny with a stunning Foxtrot.

If they haven't connected with voters after that dance, then it's not going to happen. And in case you doubt Danny's brilliance as a dancer, check this out.

I'm not really campaigning for the kid, but I have so much respect for his talent.

Another terrific group dance to start the results show - the kids did a 40's style Jive choreographed by Jean-Marc Genereaux.

OK - first two pairs are up. Well, Sabra & Dom have a firm grip on the fans and are safe. And that puts Anya & Danny back in the bottom three. It's America's favorite dancer and these two are just not connecting with the voters.

Next two pairs up and it's Sara & Pasha safe, putting Jamie & Hok in the bottom three. Pasha is one of our favorites and we are very pleased. Hok has gotten a tough break with style over the last couple of weeks.

From the final two pairs, Lacey & Kameron have the fans and are safe. That puts Lauren & Neil in the bottom three.

It's another pretty tough group of six for solos, but then with every week it's only going to get tougher.

Hey - Mia Michaels and Wade Robson were nominated for Emmy Awards for their choreography.

And the solos:

Anya - Now that was a much better solo than in previous weeks. Lots of energy and personality.
Danny - I don't have enough adjectives. He's brilliant. 'Nuff said.
Jamie - This girl is really growing on us. Classy and beautiful.
Hok - He's so good at what he does, but will they let him go because he's not as versatile? He's up against Danny and Neil.
Lauren - She was prepared this week and she was wonderful.
Neil - He is fantastic in the air.

Well this is not going to be easy.

My thoughts on the gals - Jamie must stay; both Anya and Lauren stepped up, but I give the edge to Lauren. So Anya is out.

My thoughts on the guys - Oy! Danny and Neil have similar styles. Hok is tremendous at what he does. Do the judges select based on versatility, or do they pair down to one gracefully trained dancer in favor of hip hop? My feeling is that Hok will be the one to go based on his lack of versatility.

Now the judges say:

For the gals - Jamie stays despite what the judges say was a desperate solo. It's a split decision to save Lauren and let Anya go, based on two judges who felt Lauren finally started to live up to her potential in her solo work.

For the guys - Judges unanimously eliminate Hok because he hasn't shown enough versatility, despite the wonderful Hummingbird routine from a few weeks ago. The last two weeks really hurt him.

There are incredibly talented dancers on this show. If you doubt, I'll just remind you that Anya danced the stunning Foxtrot with Danny in the clip at the beginning of this post. And Hok danced this one below, which at the time was the best dance of the season.

I'm working on the Archive Meme that Starrlight tagged me with this week. So I may be back later with another post.

I didn't make rounds again tonight. Shame on me! I'll be back around soon though. I just need a little time to get organized again.

So we're sitting here waiting for So You Think You Can Dance to begin, and Pam says "Hey! Don't forget the list!"

Are you bored with my library yet? For those of you who aren't, here are the next 13 authors on my shelves. If you want to review any previous lists, click here.

1. John Irving - Hotel New Hampshire, The World According to Garp, Setting Free the Bears, The Water-Method Man, Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany
2. Susan Isaacs - Magic Hour
3. John Jakes - The American Bicentennial Series books 1-8, North and South, Heaven and Hell, California Gold
4. Mike Jefferies - The Road to Underfall
5. James Joyce - Ulysses
6. Guy Gavriel Kay - The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy, A Song for Arbonne
7. Patricia Kennealy - The Copper Crown
8. Katherine Kerr - The Bristling Wood
9. Karen Kijewski - Copy Kat
10. Stephen King - It, The Gunslinger
11. Tabitha King - One on One
12. Jon Krakauer - Into Thin Air
13. Katherine Kurtz - The Legends of Camber of Culdi trilogy, The Heirs of Saint Camber trilogy, In the King's Service, Childe Morgan, The Chronicles of the Deryni trilogy, The Histories of King Kelson trilogy, King Kelson's Bride, The Deryni Archives, Deryni Magic, Deryni Tales, Two Crowns for America

Don't forget to sign Mr Linky - it's down there at the bottom.

This is the last week that the judges determine who stays and who goes. YAY!! This is also the last night for this group of partners. After the results show this week they will not only pick dances out of a hat, they’ll pick new partners out of a hat as well. Also, making the top 10 means that you get to go on the summer dance tour.

Our favorites tonight? Anya and Danny were brilliant with their Foxtrot. We couldn’t take our eyes off it! To watch it, you’d think they’d been dancing together forever and that Danny was a trained ballroom dancer. They definitely connected with the dance, with each other, and with the audience. It was elegant, classy, and perfect. This kind of performance was exactly what they both needed.

Who's in trouble? Tough to say. So we won't. HA!

Interesting thing about this week - fanbases will be important really for the first time. Anya and Danny were brilliant, but they haven't connected with voters. Will they be able to steal votes from another pair? Lacey and Kameron have never been in the bottom and are favorites, but will those fans vote for a subpar dance?

Did Mia Michaels design something so obscure and difficult to understand that voters will ignore how wonderful the movement was for Lauren and Neil? Are Sabra and Dom just so much fun that fans will forgive the lapses in technique? Will Jamie's beauty and elegance pull in enough votes to cover Hok's technical issues? Will the chemistry between Sara and Pasha overcome the challenge of odd music and strange choreography?

We're voting for Anya & Danny - putting our votes behind such a wonderful Foxtrot. And we'll throw in the occasional vote for Sara & Pasha.

Here's Mr Linky for the Thursday 13.

I have pictures from the car show over the weekend...really I do. But they are being held hostage in my camera. For whatever reason I can't get them to download.

Grrrrrrr

That was my post for today. Cool pics from the car show. Dangit.

So instead I can remind you that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is now playing. I took my mom to see it over the weekend and we both loved it. So now I'll be taking my lady this Friday.

First dinner...

Then the movie...

Then, it's down the road to Borders to pick up the book!!!

I didn't get a chance to finish rounds tonight, so I'll have to catch up with y'all in the next few days.

I enjoyed this so much I just needed to share it today.

Choreography by Adam Shankman

I need to share it because it's upbeat and it makes me smile. I love the music and I love the dance. I saw ugliness yesterday in my trip through the bloggosphere and it disturbed my evening. I needed something to cheer me. So this is what I've chosen.

Hey y'all - people aren't idiots because they disagree with you. People aren't wrong because they disagree with you. You don't have the right to intimidate or harrass another person just because they disagree with you.

Do you want to be called an idiot because your opinion is different?

My blog, my place, my opinion. You are welcome to comment as long as you do so respectfully. You may disagree, but you don't have to be disagreeable.

Now I'll be listening to The Mo Show later on archive because I don't get home until after 5pm on the west coast. If you can listen live, give Mo a call or send him an IM. He's talking cats today gang.

Live on Blog Talk Radio 6:30-7:30pm EST

Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Today's theme is Marble. Don't forget to visit MM HQ at It's A Blog Eat Blog World.

I've been busy from sunup Saturday morning to sundown Sunday evening. So there wasn't much time to write anything for my Marble post.

I got up early Saturday morning and hit the road headed south. I spent most of the day at a great car show. My mom's 1966 Mustang won a sponsor favorite award. YAY! While we were waiting to pick up the trophy, the DJ played Rock Around the Clock. I couldn't resist - Mom and I broke out in spontaneous dance! It was great!

After the car show we went to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Wooooooooooooooooooooo!! I'll be seeing it again soon. It met all of my expectations. I'm very pleased with it.

Sunday was all about checking out the paint job on my stepdad's 1940 Ford Fordor Sedan, chatting, and driving home in ugly Sunday evening traffic.

So here's my offering for Marble. Happy MM!

Flash Fiction and Some Dancing

Posted: Friday, July 13, 2007 by Travis Cody in

I enjoy good writing. The cool thing about blogging is I get to see it almost every day as I cruise through the bloggosphere. One of the things I've come across is Flash Fiction.

Basically, it’s very short fiction – 55 words worth of short fiction. You tell your story within that 55 word restriction.

This is my first try.

Commuting

Why do they block the intersection?

The rules of the road are explicitly clear. Don’t cross the intersection, even on a green light, if you don’t have enough room to clear the cross walk.

I had to wait through another traffic light because of these people.

Good thing I left my gun at home. Damn.

Two of my regular stops on my rounds are Cathy at Cathy's Resurrection Corner and Pauline at Cursuum Perfidio. These gals are expert practitioners of the art of Flash Fiction. You can usually catch a new 55 word masterpiece on Friday's at either blog.

I may have to cruise around and find more of these gems.

Hey! Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!! Now I've learned a new dancing term from Adam Shankman - angry jazz face. If you missed the opening routine he had the kids do from Hairspray, you missed a real treat.

Let's try a video that youtube says I can embed. This is Sara and Pasha with a terrific west coast swing from Wednesday.

So let's see how the dancers did. In the first group of two it's Sabra & Dom who are safe while Anya & Danny are again in the bottom three. Danny is the best dancer on the show. For some reason the two are just not connecting with the crowd. It's really a shame because they are both so good.

From the next group of three Lacey & Kameron are safe along with Sara & Pasha, putting Shauna & Cedric in the bottom three. Could this be the week that they do the right thing and send Cedric home? Shauna is terrific, but Cedric is not versatile enough to continue. He's great at what he does individually, but he could really hurt a partner down the line.

The final safe pair is Lauren & Neil, which puts Jamie & Hok in the bottom three. Jamie and Hok suffered from the style of dance, Smooth Waltz, which seemed to suit her very well but didn't do anything for him. They were really unable to perform the waltz part of the dance because he just couldn't master the technique. He is much more versatile than I expected, but this was just not the style for him.

I suspect that the judges will save Danny, Hok, Shauna, and Jamie - these are my thoughts before the solos.

Anya - I love the way she moves, but that solo wasn't good enough. She's used to having a partner, and it shows.
Danny - Brilliant.
Shauna - This girl is growing on me. That was amazing.
Cedric - In his own style, he is tremendous. But right now it's all he can do.
Jamie - Excellent.
Hok - Wow.

Take a look at this, if it'll play. This is Danny...who has a talent that America doesn't seem to want to vote for.

Nigel says they are taking the whole season into account as well as tonight's solos. Now that changes my mind just a bit. They may decide to keep Anya instead because of her work with Danny through all the different routines.

For the gals, Jamie and Anya stay but Shauna goes. This was tough. Nigel says he didn't see the growth across the show from Shauna, but praises her future in dance. Nigel also cautions Anya that her solos need to improve, because at the end of the day this is a solo competition.

For the guys, Nigel gets straight to the point and dismisses Cedric without ceremony. And that means Danny and Hok are through to the next stage.

And that's that...no partnerships change for next week. The decisions get tougher as we go forward. These are all tremendously talented dancers.

I've got a super busy weekend, so I'll catch up with y'all next week.

Happy Friday!

There were some notable performances last night on So You Think You Can Dance. I'll try for video, but they haven't been viewable after I post them here on the blog.

Pam and I voted for Sara & Pasha. Other favorites were Danny & Anya, Lacey & Kameron, and Lauren & Neil. Some of the pairs suffered in style and choreography this week and could be in danger, like Jamie & Hok or Shauna & Cedric.

Speaking of dancing...in case you missed it or didn't get a clear idea...I love it!! And Jamie has a wonderful post with some terrific dance clips. Check it out at Duward Discussion.

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix hit theaters today!! YAY!! Pam and I are taking my mom to see it this weekend, after the car show!! Woooooooooo!!

I have some original fiction for you today. This story kind of wrote itself very quickly. It has only been through a couple of edits. I have some more work to do, but I wanted to share it because it's something I actually finished.

THE YULETIDE STAR
by Travis Cody

Kalfan peered from between the branches of the tree, and observed a yellow haired young Human woman sitting on a split log. He knew less than many of his Elven brethren regarding Humans; however Kalfan did know enough to recognize that this one was crying.

It was none of Kalfan's business what had made this Human cry. He told himself he should leave quietly and go on about his own tasks. That is what he should do, and that is what he would do.

As he began to replace the branches of the tree to hide any trace of his presence, another Human entered the clearing. This one was an older woman, with an air of authority over the younger. Kalfan remained where he was, to watch, cursing himself for a fool because he knew he should not, and did not understand why he did.

Kalfan had a passing familiarity with the Human language, from customary basic greetings to the assorted necessaries for communication between the races. He could also speak High Dwarf, and make himself understood in the guttural and thoroughly throat constricting sounds that passed for language among the Gnomes. Thus it did not surprise him as he listened that he recognized the series of sounds the older woman spoke to the younger, from greeting to name to question about her presence here. Kalfan pronounced the name softly. Jatay was as close a rendering as he could manage in his own tongue. The sound as he barely whispered it was pleasing to him.

It was a beautiful calling in Elven, thought the young Elf, to go with a shockingly beautiful young woman. Ordinarily the beauty, or its lack, in a Human was something to which Kalfan would be indifferent. However the yellow hair possessed by this Human woman was uncommon in Elven kind. The oddity gave Jatay a grace Kalfan could identify with his own people. Kalfan imagined that if he drew closer, he might see that the woman's eyes were gray, a feature more common to his own kindred than for Humans.

His speculation bordered on the curious, and this did surprise him. Kalfan wondered if perhaps the absence of yellow hair among his people and the possibility of gray tinted eyes in a Human were the reasons for his interest. Such an odd mix was somehow fitting for a being so beautiful, regardless of her heritage.

Kalfan used this reasoning to excuse his curiosity and justify moving to the furthest limbs of the tree, still concealed yet nearly in the open. He quieted in the manner of his kind, and watched.

The older woman made a gesture Kalfan thought was an attempt to coax Jatay from the clearing. The younger woman clearly did not wish to follow. She shook her head and held near to a hastily arranged grouping of stones, wild flowers, and moss.

Kalfan nearly gasped, for this arrangement was Elven. It was a bereft Elf's Wishing Ritual. The stones represented the solid home from which a traveler had left and to which he might return. Wild flowers reminded the one who Wished of the loved one lost. Moss was believed to guide the weary traveler who had lost his way. Combined, the symbols provided a foundation for a Wish from the heart that a lost loved one be shown the way home.

Elves believed in the Wish as a powerful part of their magical heritage. But the symbols and Wish were only a part of the process. A wish was merely a longing for something. To fill the wish with any power, and to expect any response to it, one must cast a True Wish upon the Yuletide Star.

Now the scene of Human young woman and Elven Ritual became clearer to Kalfan. She had lost and was attempting to Wish the lost one back to herself.

The older woman finally won the battle of wills, as elders of any race generally will. Jatay meekly followed her from the clearing. Kalfan waited a time to be sure that they would not return, and then climbed from the tree to survey the young woman's preparations.

Everything was correct and in place. The arrangement followed the proper form. All that remained to be added was something personal belonging to the subject of the Wish, and the presence of the Yuletide Star.

Kalfan considered. It was truly none of his business that a Human had begun an Elven Ritual, although the very idea was of general interest to his people. Further, it was none of his business whether this Ritual succeeded. It was also, he reminded himself, none of his business to meddle in the affairs of Humans.

Relations between Human and Elven races had been strained in recent times. The Elves waned in power and desire to remain in the world as it gradually changed. There were fewer places where Kalfan's people could reside without the intrusion of Human growth. Kalfan was young enough to concede that many Human advances had proven beneficial to his kindred. But he was also Elf enough to understand that many precious and promising Elven lives had been lost in battles, fulfilling alliances with Human and Dwarven kind against the encroachment of evil influences.

Kalfan surveyed the young woman's preparations a final time. Concluding that he could do nothing to aid in the Wishing Ritual, and convincing himself finally that it was truly none of his concern, Kalfan strode quietly from the clearing.

*****

Kalfan climbed without a sound from the branches of a tree, unslinging his long bow and notching an arrow. He could make out the tips of the stag's antlers. Quietly, he crept forward, keeping himself down wind as he had been taught.

Suddenly, the stag raised its head and stood listening. Kalfan crouched silently, barely breathing. The stag scented the wind, remaining still, statuesque and beautiful. Then it bounded behind dense foliage and was gone.

Kalfan did not swear. It was a simple fact of a hunter's life that, on occasion, prey would catch the faintest warning. The young Elf took this in his stride, knowing that as he grew in experience, such failure would be less and less frequent. He sighed, slung his bow and replaced the arrow in his quiver. Still crouched, he took a sip of water from the skin at his belt, and contemplated his next move.

Capping the skin, Kalfan froze. A soft sound came to the Elf’s ears. It was singing, nearly as pleasing to the ear as the clear notes his mother played on her lute. Kalfan cocked his head and presented more of his ear to the sound. Indeed, the gentle voice rivaled the music of his mother. That was no mean feat nor idle compliment from the Elf, for his mother was the foremost minstrel in Elven Home.

Kalfan's curiosity took the better measure of his sense. Younger Elves were generally more inquisitive than their elders, though the discovery of new sensory pleasures was enough to pique any Elf's impassivity. Kalfan followed the sound quietly, as calm and careful as previously he had stalked the stag.

After winding his way through the trees and bushes, Kalfan came to a small thicket. Concealed within the dense foliage he peered through a slight gap in the leaves and found the source of the soft, sweet music.

It was the same young Human woman he had seen days before. Jatay, he recalled. She was sitting cross legged upon a bed of soft grass. Before her on the floor of the thicket was another Wishing Ritual. Her eyes were closed, and she was humming softly.

Kalfan was no more than six strides from the young woman. He could view Jatay's face, as well as the Ritual she had laid before her. It was closer to true than the remains of the first try Kalfan had witnessed. This time, Jatay had included a personal item of the person she had lost. It was a leather strap, possibly a belt or thong, with a small leather pouch.

All that remained for the Ritual to be attempted in earnest was a visit from the Yuletide Star.

The Yule season was a time of extreme emotional poles for Elven kind. It was a time of birth as well as a time for those grown weary of life in this world to leave it and seek the Eternal Place of Elven Lore. It was said, and passed from generation to generation by those versed in the lore, that any of Elven blood may seek the Eternal Place simply by Choosing the Path.

The Ceremony for the Choosing of the Path was performed on the third night after the appearance of the Yuletide Star in the Elven sky. The Elven sky was that portion of sky that traversed between the branches of the Great Tree found within the exact center of Elven Home. The Yuletide Star itself was known by Humans as the northern star, and it was visible to all peoples year round. Only during the special Yule season did it become the Yuletide Star to Elven kind. At that time, as the Star passed resplendent between the branches of the Great Tree, many things were possible in the reflection of its precious light.

Births during the shining of the Yuletide Star were doubly blessed. The journeys of those seeking the Eternal Place of Elven Lore were best embarked during this time. Thus the two emotional poles, birth and the life beyond, were celebrated during the Yule season, beneath the light of the Yuletide Star.

Jatay stopped singing. Kalfan could see again the tears on her face. His heart was saddened. Troubled, Kalfan wondered why the distress of a Human woman should so affect him.

The young woman heaved her shoulders in a sigh of discontent. She opened her eyes, and Kalfan was struck by the distinct gray color and Elvish slant. As he looked closer, Kalfan realized that this woman was more Elf than Human. Now he had the answer for many things.

She was a Halfling. That explained how she could know of an Elven Wishing Ritual. It also explained the enchanting way she sang, and the nearly irresistible need in Kalfan to know who she was and why she tried the Ritual.

Kalfan rose quietly and stepped from his concealment.

The young woman did not react as one might expect. She was not alarmed by the other presence. Nor did she seem disturbed that the other was an Elf. She looked directly at Kalfan, but she did not smile.

"Many pleasant greetings," Kalfan said. He bowed at the waist, never taking his eyes from the young woman's.

Jatay nodded, but did not speak.

Kalfan moved closer. He did not sit until invited, following Elven custom. He surveyed the young woman's preparations and as he did so, he stole several glances in her direction. She watched him.

"I Wish," Jatay said. She spoke in his own tongue which, while it did not surprise Kalfan, nevertheless gave him pause. He stepped back a pace.

"Do you wish me to go?" This was a polite inquiry among Elves when a greeting has not been returned.

"I Wish," repeated Jatay. Her eyes clouded and she began to cry. In the Human tongue she said, "I Wish for him to return."

Despite every policy of his people, despite every Human custom that he did not know, despite every caution he should employ, Kalfan dropped to his knees beside Jatay and gathered her in his arms while she cried.

After several moments, she composed herself. Kalfan noticed that she was older than he had at first thought. His own people found judging age in other races difficult, since theirs is a long lived race. Humans age and die at a much faster rate, and Halflings are doubly difficult to gauge. Kalfan now guessed Jatay to be in her middle to late teen years.

"Do you fare better, now?" Kalfan asked.

Jatay wiped her eyes and sat straighter. "Yes, thank you," she answered in Elven. She continued in the Human tongue. "Do you understand if I speak this language?"

"Some," he confessed. "But you must speak slowly."

She smiled. "I'm sorry if I disturbed you."

"No matter. I have seen you before. Your Ritual interests me."

Her eyes clouded. "I have no right to perform it."

"You have every right. If I see correctly, you are more Elf than Human."

"These things are not well-looked upon by my people."

"Then why do you stay with them?" Kalfan did not understand non-acceptance. Humans were of such amazing diversity that this seemed a contradiction. The Elven way was to accept all Elves as they are. This young woman, Halfling or no, would be counted Elf in Elven Home.

"I stay for my mother," Jatay replied. "I have no one else, since he left, and nowhere else to go."

Kalfan decided to let that lie. She may not accept that she could find a home among Elven kind, especially since she had been left behind by the Elf who was her father. She was of two peoples, trying to make a place with those who rejected her, based on her perceived rejection by her father.

"For whom do you Wish?" Kalfan surprised himself. He sought confirmation of his speculations, but this was a highly personal question, and one which an Elf should never presume to ask of another Elf.

"My father," Jatay answered promptly. "He left many years ago, to fight in a great battle. I know very little of him, save some of the things he taught me. I was so young and remember so little, save this Ritual."

"He told you of this?"

"I remember clearly. He made me repeat the instructions until he was sure I could recall them. Then he told me that if I ever had need of him, I should Wish, and he would come."

Kalfan pointed to the belt and pouch. "These things are his?"

"Yes. He left them with me as remembrance. I like to think he loved me, but I remember so very little."

"You have done well in your preparations. These items reinforce the Wish."

"Inside the pouch is a gemstone my father gave to my mother. I am told he loved her at one time. I thought the gemstone would help."

Kalfan looked at her seriously. "The gemstone is a more potent personal affect than the leather of these other items. Gems will hold the essence of a person far longer, and they are more likely to capture the essence of an Elf."

Carefully, Jatay extracted the gemstone. Kalfan gasped, staring at the gemstone, stunned by what his senses told him. Tensely, he reached for it. His finger moved slowly closer to it, until the tip rested gently against its polished surface.

Kalfan's hand jerked back, startling Jatay. Kalfan sat back on his heels and began to speak slowly in his own language.

"For Elven kind, kinship is a thing of great reverence, measured through the ages by unbreakable bonds. Gemstones, such as the one you hold, are elements by which kinship can be identified. When we touch one, we can sometimes tell whether the one who possesses it is related to our particular kin line. When I touched your gemstone, I felt your kinship to my clan. In our recent history stands an Elf of my clan, and I strongly suspect that this Elf may have been your father."

Kalfan looked at Jatay to see the shock registered on her face. Jatay had known her father was Elven, but she had never expected to meet another, much less one who would admit kinship to her.

"You would say this, without knowing me. But the people of my own village whom I count as kin, by blood and by marriage, disavow me."

Kalfan smiled. "You do not know enough of Elven ways to understand. As I said, kinship is as important to us as breathing. We are so few in number as a race, and it is rare for an Elven couple to have more than one child. When we find a lost kinswoman, we embrace her, regardless of the circumstances of her birth. Or the mix of blood in her veins. Elf is Elf."

"Lost kin," Jatay said sadly.

"I can think of three Elves of my clan whom you may call father,” Kalfan said gently. “He would know you in an instant, since such close blood ties as parent to offspring are stronger than any other bond. These three Elves fought in a great battle a number of years ago. It may be than one of them is the father you seek."

"Why would he not have returned?"

"My only answer to you has to do with the difference in Human and Elven years in this world. Your father has generations of Human lifetimes ahead of him. Your mother is soon to leave this world by the inevitable sands of time that bring death to Human kind. Perhaps, he did not wish to watch the ravages of age, if as you say he truly loved your mother."

"But what about me? I would hope he could at least take me with him, once my mother has passed. I am part Elf."

"I cannot say further what motivates another Elf, Jatay. But you may come with me to Elven Home and find out these things for yourself."

"I have yearned for this,” Jatay said, so quietly that Kalfan wasn’t sure he heard her. He waited quietly, and watched as emotions he did not completely understand played across her face.

“Perhaps my Wish has worked,” the young woman finally said. “Perhaps meeting you is in part a response to my Wish. I would go to Elven Home, if you will take me there."

Kalfan smiled again. "Of course I will take you. We can make your wish properly in two days time. On the eve of the day after next, the Yuletide Star will shine bright between the branches of the Great Tree in Elven Home. On that night, we will face the northern sky, and you will prepare the Ritual again, and make your Wish. On the following day, we will arrive at Elven Home, and we will know the truth."

Jatay and Kalfan sat quietly in yet another clearing, leagues away from where they had met and spoken two days before. The night was dark, sparsely lit by the glow of a thousand stars in the night sky. One star alone concerned the pair. The Yuletide Star shone brightly in the northern sky, just as Kalfan had predicted.

Jatay laid out her Ritual, as Kalfan had seen twice previously, but this time with the gemstone placed in the middle of her mix of stone, wild flowers, and moss. The gemstone glowed softly in the air of anticipation surrounding Halfling and Elf.

Kalfan instructed gently from his place at the edge of the clearing, behind is newly accepted kinswoman.

"You must find the Yuletide Star and place an image of it in your mind's eye. Then close your eyes, but keep that image strong, as though your eyes remained open and you were looking directly at it. Concentrate on the image, and form the Wish in your mind. Speak it three times aloud, then open your eyes and gaze immediately upon the Yuletide Star. As you see the Star with your physical eye, say the Wish again."

Jatay calmed her mind and took several deep breaths to soothe her heartbeat. She followed Kalfan's instructions. As she did so, she felt serenity about her, and a soothing peacefulness engulfed her thoughts. The prejudices she had endured seemed to melt away until she saw them for what they were. Fear dictated much of it, and an unwillingness to understand or accept difference. All her life she had craved the acceptance of those she considered her people and her peers. Now, with this Wishing Ritual she performed, and with Kalfan's revelations, she realized that acceptance of herself by herself was the only true acceptance she needed. Her knowledge of herself would soon be complete. Her two halves may war on the outside, her two sets of kinsmen may distrust one another, but within her, those parts that made up her being would never be in opposition again.

"Kalfan," she called, her voice barely a whisper in the stillness. "My Wish has come true."

"I do not understand."

"The Wish was never for my father to return to me, though those were the words I spoke. I realize it now. What I wanted was to belong. To be accepted for who and what I am. But I didn't truly know who or what I was."

"I cannot pretend to understand these feelings of yours. What makes this moment different from all the rest?"

Jatay turned to the Elf. "You have shown me. The way toward acceptance from others is to be at peace with myself. That is what I must have, but it cannot come through wishing."

Kalfan pondered this. He did not understand Jatay's need for this soul searching. Nor did he understand the confessed need to belong and to be accepted. For him, it was a matter of course to know his place in Elven Home. He was secure.

"Will you still come with me? You have suffered needlessly. We value kinship in Elven Home. Your father would value you, as all Elves would, as I have learned to do in just the few days of our acquaintance. You are my cousin, and I would have you near."

Jatay smiled. It was easy to make decisions, now that she was learning to follow herself rather than the restrictions of those she had formerly sought to please.

"Yes, Kalfan, I will still come with you. I have come to know many things about myself in these last few days. I accept myself, and the knowledge that this is all I need. Still, it would be nice to hear that others of my people want and need me."

"Jatay," said Kalfan, rising to cross the clearing. He knelt next to his kinswoman and circled his arms about her. "We must love ourselves, it is true. But never think that acceptance and love of others is unnecessary or even secondary to love of oneself. This is why we gather together as a people, and this is what makes life worth living. To think as one, to be as one, and to live as one is to be lonely. But, all thinking as one, all being as one, and all living as one, this is truly to be as one."

Together, in the brilliant light of the Yuletide Star, Kalfan and Jatay turned their steps toward Elven Home.
