Welcome to another Manic Monday! Don't forget to visit our fearless leader Morgen at It's A Blog Eat Blog World.

Today's word is Branch.

My offering today is a recognition of the branches of military service and the warriors who safeguard our freedoms. Regardless of your politics, the men and women of our armed forces deserve our respect and gratitude for their sacrifices.

The Few and the Proud
The United States Marine Corps was established 10 November 1775 as the Continental Marines to provided infantry support to the Navy. Today, USMC stands as our amphibious force-in-readiness capable of rapid deployment as first responders to international incidents.

Accelerate Your Life
The United States Navy was established by passage of the Naval act of 1794, although the Navy traces its roots back to the Continental navy, which was disbanded after the Revolutionary War. The officially recognized birth of the USN is 13 October 1775. This is the date on which George Washington took command of three armed schooners in order to intercept British supply ships near Massachusetts.

Be Army Strong
The United States Army was originally the Continental Army, established 14 June 1775. After the revolutionary war, the US Congress established the US Army on 3 June 1784. The Army is responsible for all land-based military operations, supported by active duty and reserve personnel. In the 1990's, the Army adopted the 7 Army Values of LDRSHIP - Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.

Answer The Call
The United States Air Force was originally part of the Army. It was established as a separate branch of service 18 September 1947. The current mission of USAF is to "deliver sovereign options for the defense of the United States of America and its global interests — to fly and fight in Air, Space, and Cyberspace".

The Shield of Freedom
The United States Coast Guard was originally established as the US Revenue Cutter Service in 1790 under the Treasury Department. In 1915, the Cutter Service merged with the US Life-Saving Service to create the modern Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is now a component of Homeland Security responsible for maritime law enforcement, mariner assistance, search and rescue, and national defense.

Don't wait for a special occasion. If you see a Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Airmen, or Coast Guardsman, then walk up to him or her proudly and thank them for all they sacrifice in the name of our freedoms.

  1. Brought tears to my eyes, Trav.

My nephew who is due to ship out to Iraq this summer called me yesterday, just to chat. I love that kid. It was great to hear his voice.

Thanks for doing him and all of the Marines, soldiers, airmen, and Coast Guard personnel proud.

  1. Danielle says:

How true you are in regards to support for our military. I love my country it is the government that I am afraid of. There are so many honorable citizens that make the tough decision to join the military and though I don't like the boss I applaud all soldiers that put their lives on the line and pray for their safe return.

  1. You know how I feel about the USMC Flag...

    Loved your post..

I'm proud to say I've walked up to service men and veterans and I've shaken their hands, said thank you, hugged them and sheltered one from the rain during the Veteran's Day celebrations in my Nation's capital. There are many veterans in my family.. and I am grateful our family never paid the ultimate sacrifice.

    Excellent bro...

  1. TopChamp says:

Hi Travis. There is nobody in my family who has served in the military - and quite honestly without wanting to cause offense - on a purely selfish level I hope this continues.

Having said this I am impressed by the people who read your blog and by their dedication and patriotism... if that is their motivation?

Hope I haven't upset anyone - not suggesting for a second that it's anything but honourable.

  1. Lisa: Seems like the thing to do, doesn't it?

Dub: Just trying to serve in the best ways that I can.

Songbird: My thanks again to your nephew for his service.

Danielle: We respect the men and women who serve, and support them in the best ways that we know.

Dix: Yes ma'am, that I do. Semper Fi Matt.

    CWM: **stands to and sings**

Lucas: I guess somebody has to do it - technologically speaking, it might as well be USAF.

Turn: I hope it's clear that my post is a tribute to reserve troops as well as active duty personnel.

Matt: Awww man! My grandpa was a Merchant Marine his entire working life - I'd never disrespect this service. But my tribute today was about combat arms! I'll get the other branches of uniformed service on another day, I promise.

Mary: It seemed the thing to do.

Ann: My family also is fortunate never to have made the ultimate sacrifice. I sure do miss my buddies though.

TC: I think it's definitely Partiotism, and sincere respect for our men and women in service to their country.

  1. Jay says:

Sadly, this post is the only reason I know what day of the week it is.

  1. Very patriotic post, Travis. I support the American and Canadian soldiers that are over there, many getting killed. I don't support the war!!!

Nice choice. I do agree that the troops are the troops regardless of politics.

  1. Great post Trav!! Although I've had family members in the army, navy and marines, I still learned some new things here - thanks! And thanks for the reminder that we should all support our troops :)

  1. Jay: Glad I could help with that.

    Alice: I hear that.

    Skittles: Thank you my dear.
