Poor poor Spidey

We went to see Spider-Man 3 on Saturday.

Some liked it. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone says "There are delicious bits aplenty in Spider-Man 3 for those who care to notice."

Many didn't like it. Kenneth Turan, LA Times staff writer, says "Though aspects of it are entertaining, the presence of all these mismatched pieces give Spider-Man 3 an ungainly, cumbersome feeling, as if its plot elements were the product of competing contractors who never saw the need to cooperate on a coherent final product."

I was disappointed in it. I was too long. It dragged. It was silly in spots, and not in a good way.

The big free-for-all battle at the end was good. But I waited an awfully long time watching a bunch of boring stuff to get to it. Some of the early fight sequences were edited in a way that made me a little motion sick. I couldn't follow them, they moved too fast.

It took so long to get Venom into the action, that I totally forgot there was supposed to be a second villain. And as far as villains go, Sandman was a wimp.

Speaking of wimps, Harry Osborne was ridiculous.

I realize that the black goop was as much a villain as the others, but it was never really explained where it came from. I don't know the story of black suit Spidey very well because it's been so long since I read the comics. So a better explanation here would have been appreciated. The sequences with Peter's teacher seemed like an after thought, and it slowed down the action.

The first film was terrific. The second was enjoyable. The third is forgettable.

Rats.

Oh No! I love Spiderman - due to my geeky brother's childhood (who am I kidding! And adult) obsession with Marvel comics.

I'll still watch it but I think he was disappointed too, which is quite a bad sign.

My son liked it although he too, wanted to see more of Venom....Cheers!!

  1. i have spiders enough without going to the movies to see more, and that's all i have to say about that! ha ha

was there at least cake afterward?

    smiles, bee

  1. Maryfly says:

sorry it was a disappointment. I'll wait for it to come out on DVD.

Did you see Pirates 3 yet? I saw it yesterday - it was entertaining but not as good as the first two in my opinion.

  1. Angell says:

Wow - so it sucked that badly eh? Well, since hubby & I never make it to the movies anyway, might as well wait for it to be released on DVD. Besides, I'm in Johnny Depp mode this summer!

  1. Sigh.

We haven't seen Spidey 3 yet, but we'll probably go because we've seen the first two, and we can't NOT see the third one, you know what I mean?

At least we have Harry this summer - Yippee! I'm halfway through Book 6, so I'm almost fully prepared...

  1. TC: I was very disappointed.

Matt: He even liked the parts that dragged?

Bee: That reminds me - have to clear off the balcony this coming weekend and there are spiders out there. GACK!

Mary: We'll probably get to see Pirates with my company. That's a good thing because I wouldn't pay my own money to see it.

    Angell: It sucked for me.

Songbird: Harry! I can hardly wait. Why does that series make us feel like we're kids again? Thanks for reminding me - gotta start reading again soon.

I was phenomenally disappointed in SM3. SM 1 set the bar high and I firmly believe SM 2 raised it significantly.

Could SM 3 possibly have been another 8 or 9 hours longer, maybe? Maybe we could have added another 12 subplots and 6 more songs by Mary Jane.

Seriously. It sucked pretty bad across the board. It actually made me look FORWARD to the next Fantastic Four movie, and the last one was so anemic that's really saying something.

  1. Ian: Dude! Exactly what I was thinking!

  1. Unknown says:

Yeah, I've been avoiding this film because of all the bad reviews I'm getting from friends...same ones warn about Pirates 3. I'm skipping that as well.

Of the first 2, I prefer the second Spidey movie. I was looking forward to the third, but I've heard some pretty disappointing reviews so far. Ah well, I wait for everything to come out on DVD anyway.

  1. Lisa Ryan says:

hmmmm. my boys liked it, I will wait til video.

  1. Jay says:

I laughed out loud during the part when Peter dances, and not in any good way at all. I felt uncomfortable. I felt embarrassed.

  1. Neila says:

That is too bad. I get to very few movies these days and I really wanted to see that one. After all the reviews I've read, I think it's on my "renter" list.

  1. Steven: I waited and I hoped. But it just wasn't up to standard. My next hope's are Harry, Ocean's 13, and Bourne.

Beck: I did like the #2 but preferred #1 because it raised the bar for superhero movies.

Lisa: I'm surprised that kids liked it because it's so slow.

    Jay: Oh me too!

Neila: I waffled and thought about waiting for video, but we finally just went.

  1. I actually enjoyed the third one. No, it wasn't as good as the second, which I think was the best of the three, but I quite liked it.

As far as the black goo that becomes Venom, believe me, they couldn't fit that origin in the movie. It starts out when Spiderman was in another universe with a bunch of other Marvel Heroes and goes from there.

I agree with the motion sickness about the first fight with Harry. It was moving so quick that I couldn't follow it and felt some of that motion sickness.

Still I thought it managed to capture the spirit of Spidey. I do hope that if (or should I say when) they do a fourth they get it down to one villian. More than one and it becomes hard to keep everyone straight.

  1. Julie says:

Aww I'm sorry that you didn't like it, honey. I know how you were looking forward to it.

Not my type of flick....so I won't be watching it.

  1. Anonymous says:

ahh then I will happily wait for it to come out on cable...

    thanks for the tip.

  1. I'm looking forward to Bourne, but Ocean's 12 had me mystified, so Ocean's 13 leaves me...apprehensive.
