Semper Fi Matt

I was going to put up one of two meme posts I've been working on, but instead I want to honor my friend Dixie's son Matt. He leaves on Sunday to become a Marine.

I've never met this young man, but his choice to serve makes my heart swell with pride. Dixie has been understandably worried about her son. She has a mother's pride and love for her firstborn. She's not quite ready to let him go.

But she will. She'll hug him tight on Sunday, smooth his shirt over his shoulders as he stands tall. She'll hold his head still and look in his eyes, and tell him how proud she is and how much she loves him. She'll try not to cry and fail.



Matt will smile at his mom, a little embarrassed but understanding. He'll take her hands in his and squeeze them. He'll lean close and whisper in her ear, "I love you Mom". He'll grip her cheeks one last time, kiss her gently, and reassure her that he'll be fine. He'll shake his stepfather's hand, pick his little sister up in a bear hug. Then he'll turn back to his mom, say he loves her again, and off he'll go.



Matt - I'm proud of you and of your choice. I'm proud of your mom too.
