Saturday random thoughts

Don't you just love a nap on a chilly Saturday afternoon? We finished our errands and got home in the middle of the first quarter of ASU vs WSU. Then we just kinda fell asleep on the sofa and woke up in time to watch the fourth quarter.

Washington State came up just short today against #19 Arizona State. I was impressed with Cougar QB Alex Brink. He orchestrated a couple of really strong drives in the fourth quarter, and drove his team late against an aggressive defense and got them in field goal range. Unfortunately the kicker had the distance but not the accuracy and the kick drifed well to the left.

Stanford is down in SoCal this evening to take on #2 USC. The Trojans are still ranked #1 in the USA Today poll, but have fallen to #2 in the AP poll. I guess sometimes it is about style points. And so far they've got their hands full with the Cardinal. USC plays with the arrogance of a team that expects success. That swagger looks like confidence when your team is winning by 30, but it just looks silly when you commit bad penalties and turn the ball over. You may still win, but you're not dominating and that certainly contributed to the drop to #2 in the AP poll.

Woooooooooooooooo for Dixie's Vols! Tennessee upset #12 Georgia today, 35-14. Unfortunately Turn's Wildcats fell to #11 South Carolina on Thursday.

The Irish are at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena this evening to take on UCLA. After getting blasted by a surprising Utah team in September, UCLA is playing solid football now. Notre Dame made some solid progress on offense in the second half last week in the loss to Purdue. Right now, all I'm looking for is more progress.

The Huskies had the day off today. Next weekend they travel to Tempe to take on Arizona St. UW has played well and the extra practice time should be useful as they take on the undefeated Sun Devils.

Oregon is off this weekend too. They host Washington State next weekend. The Ducks are looking to rebound after dropping a heart-breaker to Cal last week in one of the most entertaining games of the season so far.

Here's the game of the day. #9 Florida vs #1 LSU. Outstanding young QB Tim Tebow is tested against LSU's excellent defense, which is ranked 1st in the nation in total defense.

OK gang. It's time to focus on three football games and make some blog rounds. I'll be here tomorrow with my NFL picks and Sunday observations.

Later babies!

  1. Charles: Yeah it was. And champions find ways to win, which LSU did.
