Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Don't forget to cruise by MM HQ at It's A Blog Eat Blog World. Today's theme is Rank.

When you see one star on the lapel of an officer, he is a Brigadier General.

If you see two stars, he is a Major General.

Three stars designates a Lieutenant General.

So what do you call an officer with four stars? You call him Sir.

In the Marine Corps, the Commandant of the Corps is a four star General. He is the highest ranking Marine and is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The 34th and current Commandant is General James T. Conway. He was awarded his 4th star in November 2006.

Another Marine, General James E. Cartright, is the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"Marine Corps Ranks are more than just who salutes whom. Marine rank is a badge of leadership. Responsibility for personnel, equipment, and mission grows with each increase in rank."

I pulled that quote from this website that explains more about the various enlisted, warrant officer, and officer ranks and pay grades in the Marine Corps.

For some reason I have The Pirates Of Penzance in my head right now...

"I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical,
    From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
I 'm very well acquainted too with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse."

Oh crap, now that's stuck in my head...

  1. As always a respectful tribute to The Marines...nice done Travis

  1. Travis, Yes both of those pictures were Wendy Hiller. The young one would have been in the late 1930s or early 40s and the latter probably just before her retirement 50 years later.

  1. Julie says:

Very very good Travis! I must admit though...I was hoping for your dance review...guess I'll have to wait just a little longer huh?

  1. Linda says:

I see that many of us brilliant minds thought alike this week when it came to rank!

Great post! Very nicely done, as always.

  1. V: Thanks dude.

    Jamie: I thought so.

Julie: Awww! You were about 10 minutes early. I was adding some thoughts and trying to polish things up.

    Linda: Thanks Ma'am!

  1. Stine says:

I think I'll call them Sir regardless...

  1. Marilyn says:

My ex was in the National Guard and had all this stuff memorized, but for the Army. I'm glad somebody knows it because I have a hard time remembering it all.

  1. Marilyn says:

Geee.... Andi's comment is impresive. You think she did that from memory?

  1. Stine: That's probably best.

Marilyn: It's harder for me to remember enlisted. And I wouldn't put it past Anndi to have known that off the top of her head.

  1. Ooo-rah, Trav. You are an awesome "almost" Marine, you know that?
