Encores and results...plus a WOW

Shall we have encores? I say yes!

First, in my review of Cristian and Cheryl I said that he looked like a wax figure. Well, I take that back. I still don't agree that the dance was worth a 27, but it wasn't as bad as I first thought. I thought Marissa and Tony were better, so they get my encore choice.

The Viennese Waltz from Marissa and Tony was enchanting. She did look like a Princess and that dance deserved better music. The melody worked, but the lyrics were ridiculous for a dance that is supposed to be about romance and elegance.

The Rumba from Mario and Karina was sexy, sultry, and steamy...and extremely well danced. We liked this because it was danced and not posed. And Bruno said a no-no!

The dance of the night, and possibly the season so far...the Jive from Kristi and Mark!

Alrighty then...let's cue that theme music and get this party started!

Here's the leader board from Monday:

30 Kristi & Mark
29 Mario & Karina
27 Cristian & Cheryl
26 Marissa & Tony
24 Jason & Edyta
24 Shannon & Derek
21 Marlee & Fabian

The judges decided they wanted to see the wild and out of control group dance as their encore choice.

Hey! In two weeks we celebrate the 100th show!

Ashlee Simpson is in the ballroom, performing Boys accompanied by Artem Chigvintsev, Genya Mazo, Lilit Avagyan, and Anna Tovbin. The dancing was great but the song was meh.

The first couple safe is Shannon and Derek, but Marlee and Fabian are in the bottom two.

Members of the Riverdance company are in the ballroom, led by Michael Patrick Gallagher. Nice Irish fella, eh?

Let's have some ballroom kids!

First up, 13 year olds Brandon and Brittany dancing Cha Cha Cha. Brittany is deaf in one ear. Brandon's foot slipped on the first step, but it didn't phase him at all. They are terrific! I'm blown away by these kids every week. Len says phenomenal, sharp and crisp. Bruno says it was dancing of the highest standard. Carrie Ann says it was perfectly stylized and executed. They had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction too.

Next, 12 year olds Austin and Liza dancing Samba. She is quite a bit taller than he is, but it isn't an issue. They are both terrific performers, especially Austin. He's quite the little charmer on the floor. Another terrific performance. Bruno says it was fun to watch, and Austin's talent is huge. Carrie Ann says they set the stage on fire, working the crowd. Len says it was fast, crisp, and clean.

The judges select Brandon & Brittany to compete against Jaryd & Cara and Aaron & Rashell.

Now who else is safe? It's Marissa & Tony, along with Cristian & Cheryl.

Do you know what that means? It means that one of the stronger couples could be in the bottom two...Mario, Jason, or Kristi.

So, who's it going to be? Kristi & Mark are safe, as are Jason & Edyta.

That puts Mario & Karina in the bottom two with Marlee & Fabian.

Mario & Karina will return, which means Marlee & Fabian are out.

Next week the couples learn two dances, a ballroom and a Latin.

Hey Vinny...Mr David Cook has done something different. This is one of my favorite pieces of theatre music, second only to Bring Him Home from Les Miserables. Check out the WOW moment from Andrew Lloyd Webber week.

Oh oh oh oh!! Guess what premiers on May 22??? Yup! My other favorite dance show!

Later babies!

  1. Can you believe hubman has given up Tuesday nights to Big Brother? Even I was surprised!!!
    You're still doing a great job, Trav.
    ~~~Blessings~~~
    I don't like that song. And I don't like him messing with it.
    I also don't like that Andrew LW is over there when he has his own show on over here.
    Grr.
    However - I'll get to watch this as they show it on ITV2 here unlike the dancing which is on UKTVGold (which you have to pay to see).
    As always, Travis, a great overview of what happened, and what I had to miss while at class. Have a great day.
    Whoofin' at ya, my hooman friend. BARK!
  1. Anndi says:
    Caught the show in spurts but I saw the kids and they rocked!
    And at this point, they should just give David C the title... no one touches him.
    We can't wait for S You Think You Can Dance... (they'll be doing one in Canada too!! WOOHOO we get TWO shows!!)
  1. Marsha says:
    No real surprises in either show, well I take that back...Mario in the bottom two???? What's with that...why the heck wasn't it Shannon????? anywayy....
    That other show....well, at this point more variety of styles needs to be shown and frankly, the only one doing that is DC....
    The final two will be both Davids, but really, Cook is overall the best as far as range...Archuletta has so much possiblities for the future. I'm quite impressed!
  1. Liz Hill says:
    He hit the notes but i really wanted to see him catch the tension in that song--he didn't for me but he was technically very good. he's definitely a star.
  1. David continues to amaze me! Randy is right...if you can really sing, you can sing anything! I agree with Anndi--just give him the title already!
  1. Schmoop says:
    Oh dear God....Make the madness stop!! ; ) Cheers Travis!!
  1. Ivanhoe says:
    Ha! I missed last night watching something else. But I have you and your review! I think it was time for Marlee to go.
    Oh and Mr. Cook was great and so was Sayesha (sp.)
  1. Sorry Marlee went home...she took on an extremely difficult challenge and proved she could succeed...
    I was duly impressed last night by Mr. David Cook...THIS is the moment I have been waiting for, no matter what Simon has to say. This showed true vocal power and styling and allowed me to see him as an artist who can succeed in a genre other than he has shown.
    I disagree with TurnBaby...I think he did catch the tension in the song..and did it well...
    I ALMOST got a chill moment...not quite..but it was there for a second.
  1. Sandee says:
    You are really hooked on this show aren't you? Good for you. Enjoy. Have a great day Travis. :)
  1. I was in DC when Les Miz was in previews before heading for Broadway. The first time I heard "Bring Him Home" my reaction was that you would have to have the soul of a rock not to cry during that song.
    My favorite version of "Music of the Night" is Sammy Davis, Jr. in the Ultimate Event. With only the aid of lighting, he becomes the phantom and it's great.
    I just don't need a TV any more, all I have to do is pop over here and see your lovely reviews.
  1. Akelamalu says:
    You do great reviews Trav!
  1. Julie says:
    I knew you would catch the little teaser of SYTYCD!!!!
  1. Linda says:
    Indeed that was WOW! As I was listening to it Amanda popped in from the dining room thinking that I was watching a clip from the movie and was quite surprised to see it was an AI contestant. We haven't been watching this season but the clips I see here on David Cook are enough to sell me on him!
    As for DWTS, I turned it on in time to see "Riverdance" and I was entranced as always. I got to see the production of "Spirit of the Dance" out in Reno many years ago and thought it was fantastic. I love that style of dancing.
  1. I loved David Cook's rendition as well. It was a perfect balance of strength and tenderness.
  1. Gracie: Well, we should all enjoy the things we like!
    TC: Sorry! I liked it a lot.
    Alice: Glad you enjoyed!
    Reba: **tosses frisbee**
    Ann: If DC wins, I wonder what kind of songs they'll make him record. And I should be blogging SYTYCD from the beginning this season.
    Marsha: I suspect that if it comes down to a battle of the Davids, that Archuletta will win because of the tween girl vote. And I'm ok with that.
    Turn: I went by the chill I got from it.
    Apple Pie: He's a powerhouse.
    Matt: But we're having a good time with the madness!
  1. Ivanhoe: DC and Syesha were my two favorites last night. I really wanted one more week for Marlee though.
    V: I found many of Simon's criticisms directed at the theme, which was beyond the kids' control. It was the singing that should have been judged, and DC had the singing down solid!
    Sandee: What was your first clue? LOL! Thanks dear!
    Jamie: I saw Sammy sing the song during the MDA Telethon several years ago. I didn't get chills, but he was brilliant.
    Pauline: Pleased to be of service!
    Akelamalu: Thanks!
    Julie: Naturally!
    Linda: I hadn't realized that Phantom was playing in Vegas. Now Pam and I would like to go so we can see that, Cirque de Soleil, and Riverdance.
    Mimi: He really did the song justice, didn't he?
  1. j says:
    I am going to have to watch the videos tomorrow.. it is after 1:00 am and I am getting up at 5....
    STOOPID!
    Had to say that on last years so you think you can dance, a guy I worked with at the studio made it to Vegas, and then disappeared from the show. He was a clogger and the one that the British fellow said "not so much BOO-Tay shaking next time" He is such an amazing dancer, I was disappointed that he didn't go any further.
    Talk atcha later!
    Jen
  1. Jennifer: I remember that guy! His audition was excellent, but the judges thought he wouldn't be able to keep up with the different styles and choreography. I think he performed on the finale last season.
  1. Unknown says:
    I don't even watch Dancing with the Stars - I just read your review! It's that doggone good!
  1. Kimmie says:
    Hey Trav,
    I thought DC did a great job also, and felt the chills go through me when he sang. I also loved Brook's rendition of "You Must Love Me". Other than having to stop and restart, she also gave me the chills with her voice and her portrayal as she sang it. She really got into the song. I agree with you on Archuletta, may win because of the teeny boppers votes, but that dosn't change where David Cook is headed! He is an amazing singer.
    As far as DWTS...I was sad to see Marlee go. I believe it was inevitable though. Her courage is amazing. What an awesome women.
    Thanks Travis!
    Smiles,
    Kimmie
  1. BeckEye says:
    Yes, David Cook was very good last night, and he narrowly escaped being molested by Lord Webber.
    I'm looking forward to "So You Think You Can Dance." I'm also looking forward to see if they can find a dancer as hot or hotter than Pascha.
  1. TopChamp says:
    I think I must have been in a mood when I was visiting.... there's even a growl in there!
    Sorry!!!
