Page 123 meme, and then some

Well, I didn't start out to tell you a bunch of stuff, but it turns out that I have a bunch of stuff to tell!

Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby yesterday and talk of a possible Triple Crown will be all the rage among horse racing enthusiasts for the next two weeks leading up to the Preakness. (photo credit: Al Behrman / AP)

But sadly, that talk will be tempered by the tragic death of Eight Belles. The filly finished second, but collapsed a quarter of a mile or so after the finish. She broke both of her front ankles and had to be euthanized right there on the track. (photo credit: Coady Photography)

Oh...another bit of business before we get to the meme. We went to see Iron Man yesterday. Robert Downey Jr was terrific in the title role. We definitely enjoyed the film. If you go see it, be sure to stay through the end credits. There's a nice little surprise for those who enjoy super hero movies, and particularly for fans of Marvel's Avengers.

OK, now it's time for a tag from Alice at I Was Born2Cree8. This is the Page 123 meme and it goes like this...

1. Provide a list of the books you’re currently reading.

I just finished Before They Are Hanged, the second book in The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie. I'm actively reading two books now. The first is The Few and the Proud, a book about Marine Corps drill instructors by Larry Smith. The second is The Hunters by W.E.B. Griffin.

I have a bunch of books in the queue:

The Shooters by W.E.B. Griffin
White Night by Jim Butcher
Knights of the Blood by Katherine Kurtz and Scott MacMillan
At Sword's Point by Katherine Kurtz and Scott MacMillan
White Wolf by E.E. Knight

2. Pick up the nearest book, and open it to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence, and post the next three sentences.

I've already done a meme with Before They Are Hanged, so I'll choose The Few and the Proud for this one. Page 123 of this book falls within chapter 9. I've just started reading in this book and haven't gotten so far yet. Chapter nine is written from the perspective of Morton Janklow, the assisting defense attorney for the court martial of Matthew McKeon, who took his training platoon into Ribbon Creek, resulting in the death of six Marine recruits.

Here are my three sentences:

"Is it unusual to go in Ribbon Creek?"

He said, 'I've been in Ribbon Creek eight or ten times.' He said, 'As a matter of fact, in San Diego they march them in the ocean.'

No tags...steal or borrow as you like.

I'm almost caught up with memes! YAY! They weren't all tags...sometimes I see memes around the bloggosphere and decide I like them. I did see in comments this weekend that I've been tagged for something. I need to get out and find out what it is.

We've got the two night 100th episode celebration for Dancing with the Stars coming up on Monday and Tuesday this week! I guess the regular performance show is Monday, when the remaining couples will again perform two dances. Then Tuesday at 8pm there is a special reunion show with past celebrities and professionals returning, plus some other special guests, followed by results at 9pm.

And were down to the Final Four on that show that shall remain...ok ok! On American Idol, we're down to the Final Four contestants...David Cook, David Archuletta, Syesha Mercado, and Jason Castro. That's also on at 8pm on Tuesday...yikes!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

My Lakers take on Utah today at 12:30pm PDT. Go Lakers!

You know I'm not surprised Big Brown won. I am impressed at how he won.

  1. Julie says:

Well don't forget! Maksim and Mel B will be on DANCE! Woohoooo!!!

  1. Big Brown won from the 20 slot, that hasn't happened many times. He is a Palm Beach County horse so there was lots of excitement here. It is sad what happened to 3 bells.

How sad about Eight Belles. :(

Robert Downey Jnr was on The Jonathan Ross Show (chat show) on Friday night talking about Iron Man, it sounds like a great film.

  1. Turn: We didn't watch. We went to the movie instead.

    Julie: Of course!

Sarge: It's very sad. I'm glad we didn't watch the race because seeing that horse go down would have been heart-breaking.

Akelamalu: We really enjoyed him in the film.

  1. I take it you like W.E.B Griffin? I've got a book or two by him around and have been intending to read some for years. But somehow I've never gotten to it.

  1. Charles: I do. He tends to info dump quite a bit, but he also captures the flavor of the military and I like his characters. His heroes are flawed, but they generally act with honor. Even some of his "villains" can be honorable.

I see a date night in our future. Dinner, drinks, hand holding, and IRON MAN, just Hubby and me!

    Thanks for the review.

  1. Jennifer: You're welcome! Enjoy!
