49ers vs Seahawks, second half

Hey! Help yourself to some snacks while we get organized for the second half.

SF takes the second half kickoff and promptly goes 3 and out.

QB Matt Hasselbeck drives Seattle down inside the 49ers 15 before an offensive holding penalty halts momentum and moves the ball back to the 25. Then then 49er LB Patrick Willis picks off a deflected pass and returns it 86 yards for a TD to tie the game at 20-20.

Wooooo and Hoooooooooo!!! GO NINERS!

This just in...Brett Favre has thrown an interception that has resulted in a New England TD. NE leads 13-3.

Now SF is starting to get some more pressure on Hasselbeck, and the coverage is tightening up on the receivers. And SF picks off another deflected pass. DB Walt Harris catches the tipped pass at the SF 41 yard line and the 49ers are in business again.

O'Sullivan throws complete for 19 yards to Johnson. The SF offensive line is protecting O'Sullivan much better now, and the Seahawks defense is on its heels.

RB Frank Gore goes wide on a run down for about 7 yards down to the 2 yard line, and then bounces the next run to the outside for a TD. SF leads for the first time today, 27-20.

Pam is beginning to grumble a bit.

Oh...does anyone else think that the new MS Windows commercials with Gates and Seinfeld are stupid?

Now Hasselbeck tries to restore some order to his rattled offense. Seattle goes to safe, short passes mixed with runs up the middle to string together some first downs and sustain a drive.

Sometimes it pays to be conservative. Seattle goes 74 yards in 15 plays, capped off by a 1 yard TD run by TJ Duckett to tie the game at 27-27.

And the Seahawks defense wastes not time forcing the 49ers to go 3 and out on the ensuing possession. Andy Lee gets off a 59 yard punt, but Michael Bumpus runs the kick back 30 yards to give the Seahawks great field position.

The Seattle offensive line protected Hasselbeck pretty well on that drive, but SF finally stood up and got some pressure on him for protect the endzone and force a field goal. The Seahawks grab the lead back at 30-27.

Now can JT O'Sullivan reinvigorate the SF offense? Maybe. The one thing he needs to stop doing is holding the ball, thinking something is going to open up and then finally taking the sack instead of throwing the ball away.

There's a difference between hanging in the pocket under pressure and holding the ball too long. On the next play after he takes his 6th sack, he hangs in under pressure and completes a timing pattern over the middle to Bruce for 30 yards. A couple plays later, he scrambles for 16 yards and a 1st down, and then gets sacked for the 8th time.

Seattle commits another red zone penalty, holding on the wide receiver, resulting in 1st and goal inside the 10 yard line. But SF can't get a TD to take the lead, and must settle for a field goal to tie the game at 30-30 with 2:42 to play.

SF gets excellent coverage on the ensuing kickoff, pinning the Seahawks deep at the Seattle 10 yard line. And the 49er defense is standing up strong to keep the Seahawks pinned deep.

Hasselbeck gets sacked on 3rd down, forcing the Seahawks to punt from their own endzone with 1:16 to play.

SF takes over at the Seahawk 49. O'Sullivan scrambles and finally finds Frank Gore for 17 yards. Another pass gets SF into field goal range. O'Sullivan calls time out with :03 to play, and Joe Nedney misses the 41 yard try that would have won the game.

Dangit! Rats!

Pam says "Whew!"

Now we go to OT. SF wins the coin toss and will take the ball. The kick is into the endzone, so the 49ers begin from their own 20.

Wooooooooooooooooooo!!! O'Sullivan to Bruce for 34 yards on 3rd down! That was a terrific throw from a very small pocket into a very small window, because Bruce was pretty well covered on the play.

SF has driven into field goal range for Nedney, on the 22 yard line. Nedney missed from 41 at the end of regulation. And now it's 4th and 1, a 40 yard field goal try for the win.

IT'S GOOD! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

There is no victory jig...I am a gentleman and sensitive to the fact that my team beat Pam's.

I'll be back later with some final thoughts on the sports day. It's time to get some dinner.

Ah yes, the football gods have smiled on us this weekend. Your Raiders looked like a completely different team this week and of course the 49ers win!!!

As a bonus, like you I got to watch the game on live television.

There sure was a lot of funky stuff going on during that game, but it did make for an exciting one to watch.

I completely agree about o'Sullivan holding the ball to stinking long. He's got to learn to throw it away instead of taking the sack. Maybe after a good tongue lashing from coach Nolan and the bruises on his body from the defensive line he'll consider that next week.

What the heck is Microsoft trying to sell us anyway? I think stupid is an appropriate description of their latest commercials.

  1. Jeff: Raiders won, 49ers won, Irish won, Colts won...woooooooo!! A good weekend of sports I say!
