The Dodgers lead Arizona by 3 games, and the magic number is 6 with 8 games to play.

The Dodgers have 2 games with San Francisco, then 3 with San Diego, then the final 3 of the season at San Francisco. Arizona has 1 game at Colorado, 4 at St Louis, and then the final 3 at home against Colorado.

Update: The Dodgers lead the Giants 5-2 in the 4th inning. A win would push the lead over Arizona back to 3.5 and make the magic number 5 with 7 games to play.

Things didn't go well for the Irish in East Lansing. Michigan State capitalized on Notre Dame turnovers to get the 23-7 win. Senior RB Javon Ringer ran for 201 yards on 39 carriers and scored 2 TDs. His run of 63 yards in the 4th quarter pretty much ended any chance of the Irish coming back to win.

Irish sophomore QB Jimmy Clausen threw 2 critical interceptions, and and ND fumbled once. The Irish had a paltry 16 net yards rushing, which includes 31 negative yards on sacks of Clausen. Pathetic.

Notre Dame hosts Purdue next Saturday to complete its Big 10 schedule.

NC State upset #15 East Carolina State and pretty much stole away any chance of the Pirates crashing the BCS party at the end of the season. The Wolfpack tied the game late in the 4th quarter, and then the defense forced a fumble on the first play of OT. Then NC State scored a TD on their OT possession and won the game 30-24.

Freshman Russell Wilson played through an early platoon with junior Harrison Beck for the Wolfpack, but Wilson was the more effective of the two and finished the game. He threw for 210 yards on 21 of 31 passes with 3 TDs.

East Carolina may fall out of the Top 25. The Pirates host Houston next.

#14 BYU might be the top BCS buster to follow, based on the strength of the MWC with teams like #20 Utah and Air Force. The Cougars destroyed Wyoming 44-0.

I don't know much about BYU, other than the controversial ending to the game against Washington on Sept 6 and the demolition of UCLA 59-0 on Sept 13. So evidently this is a team that can score a lot of points.

BYU has a bye next week followed by a road game at Utah State.

Injuries are part of the game and you have to overcome them just like anyone else, but Oregon has got to have some of the worst luck. Before the season started, the Ducks lost their first string QB. Then last week they lost their second guy.

Today, junior Jeremiah Masoli started the game but left early with a concussion. That left Oregon with a couple of freshmen, Chris Harper and Darron Thomas.

Boise State took advantage and beat the Ducks 37-32. Bronco freshman QB Kellen Moore was 24 of 36 for 386 yards and 3 TDs against 1 interception. Boise State took advantage of 4 Oregon turnovers, including 3 interceptions from those freshman QBs.

Oregon expects to have Masoli back next week at Washington State, and sophomore Justin Roper could be back in time for USC on Oct 4.

Only six teams from the Pac 10 were in action this week.

Arizona (3-1, 1-0) beat UCLA (1-2, 0-1), 31-10
Washington State (1-3, 0-1) beat Portland State (Big Sky), 48-9
#17 Oregon (3-1, 1-0) lost to Boise State (WAC), 37-32
Arizona State (2-2, 1-0) lost to #3 Georgia (SEC), 27-10
Stanford (2-2, 1-1) beat San Jose St (WAC), 23-10

Here are the results for the AP Top 10

1 USC, idle
2 Oklahoma, idle
3 Georgia beat Arizona State, 27-10
4 Florida beat Tennessee, 30-6
5 Missouri beat Buffalo, 42-21
6 LSU beat #10 Auburn, 26-21
7 Texas beat Rice, 52-10
8 Wisconsin, idle
9 Alabama beat Arkansas, 49-14
10 Auburn lost to #6 LSU, 26-21

  1. I was heartbroken over Arkansas. Well, there's always next year.

  1. Jeff B says:

The most impressive part of the Michigan State / ND game was actually after it was over. When the on field reporter went to Ringer for an interview, he started to answer her first question and then said, "Excuse me, my team is praying...we always pray after the game...I gotta go."

Religious affiliation aside, I thought this showed class. He gave up his moment in the spotlight for what was more important to him personally. That's class.

I am in pain to say the least today... ouch just OUCH. Have to say tho- Boise was a good team..well except for the 2 that got ousted lol...
There is always next week~ sigh

  1. Charles: I did think about that when I saw the score. But there are still games to play and moments to be had.

Jeff: I didn't see that, but it doesn't surprise me. The pronouncers were talking about the kid all day, describing that he's a team guy first.

Cheesy: I think I would take a look at my QB conditioning program and my offensive line recruiting. That's just too many QBs to get injured.
