Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Don't forget to cruise by MM HQ at the Manic Monday blog. Today's theme is Season.

The video is the opening song from the movie Rent. The musical was written by Jonathan Larson (1960-1996), who died suddenly from an aortic aneursym the night before the off-Broadway premier. The show won a Pulizter Prize as well as a Tony for Best Musical. The film version was released in 2005.

The lyrics are simple, yet indelible and profound.

Seasons of Love
lyrics and music by Jonathan Larson

All:
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Moments so dear
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes
How Do You Measure - Measure A Year?
In Daylights - In Sunsets
In Midnights - In Cups Of Coffee
In Inches - In Miles
In Laughter - In Strife

In - Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes
How Do You Measure A Year In The Life?

How About Love?
How About Love?
How About Love?
Measure In Love

Seasons of Love.
Seasons of Love.

Joanne:
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes
Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Journeys To Plan

Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes
How Do You Measure The Life Of A Woman Or A Man

Collins:
In Truth That She Learned
Or In Times That He Cried
In Bridges He Burned
Or The Way That She Died

All:
It's Time Now - To Sing Out
Though The Story Never Ends
Let's Celebrate
Remember A Year
In The Life Of Friends

Remember the Love
Remember the Love
Remember the Love
Measure In Love

Joanne:
Oh you got to you got to remember the love,
You know that love is a gift from up above
Share love, give love, spread love
Measure, measure your life in love.

ALL
Seasons Of Love(2x)

Joanne:
Measure your life, measure your life in love

I've always liked that song. Makes me smile every time.

  1. I like that song Trev, we can agree to agree......

  1. Julie says:

Thanks Travis...gives me a lot to think about.

  1. I was in a chamber choir a couple years ago and we did a Rent medley. I haven't seen the show but I sure love the music! Thanks for that clip. I had forgotten how great that song is!

  1. LAC says:

Great take on the word. I've never seen the show yet, but that song is great.

  1. Anonymous says:

    Oh, that song!

I didn't know that Mr. Larson died before the premiere.

I need to watch the DVD. Never saw this play.

  1. OK, this is definitely not my kind of music, but I do sort of like it. Nice harmonies.

  1. A great song..thanks for sharing.

  1. It is a wonderful song, but I love the whole musical. There is so much warmth and humor in the show to match the tragedy that ends on being hopeful for the future.

  1. Akelamalu says:

Nice song, I've never heard it before.

  1. Jeni says:

Trav -thanks for sharing not just the video but the information on the person behind it too. I confess that I usually don't pay much attention to the names of people who write music and such even though I may have heard their work performed on numerous occasions. Musicians, groups, too -I often pay no attention as to who the performers are, what their names are and such. (I'm lousy on trivia about stuff like that!) But it's always nice to learn a bit more about something you've heard and liked. Thanks again!

  1. The lady posted the bumper sticker to make the point that "FYI….I don’t hate. Too exhausting." I agree the bumper sticker expresses hate and it is not what I believe or the Ol Broad believes, her point was made by the comment from her reader. It is ok for your side to do hateful things but not ours. I too have gay friends and this post in no way was intended to insult them. I believe that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, and my vote in Florida reflected my belief, the people have spoken.

  1. Meribah says:

Now, THERE was someone who appreciated life. Pity his had to be cut short. Thanks for sharing, Trav.

  1. TopChamp says:

aagh - I forgot that your comments doesn't pop up separately and listened to the WHOLE introduction (which lasts a long time) then hit 'comments' and stopped. Gonna have to start all over again to find out what this sounds like after the repeated 4 bar section. Bah.

  1. Ann: Me too.

    Sarge: On this we can.

    Julie: You're welcome.

    Clancy: The show is powerful.

Star8278: This song always makes the theatre play list.

    Lois: It's really very good.

    Anthony: Indeed.

Charles: The melody is stirring as well.

    V: My pleasure.

Jamie: The way the show ended is one reason why it's difficult for me to watch it repeatedly.

Akelamalu: Give it a look some time.

Jeni: I don't do that kind of research often enough myself.

  1. Sarge,

I don't think your post does what you intended, nor does hers, but I appreciate you clearing it up.

I disagree with your belief, but I don't think that's the point. We've established that we can disagree.

I don't think that anyone's belief one way or the other entitles them to have a discriminatory vote over a group of people, essentially telling those people that they aren't equal and don't deserve the same rights as anyone else.

Marriage is a contract entered into by consenting and capable parties with benefits, responsibilities, and legal protections. To deny that contract to anyone on the basis of a belief is fundamentally unconstitutional.

  1. Meri: Appreciated and, I think, understood it too.

TC: Sorry about that. I take it you didn't care for the melody in those first 4 bars?

  1. Linda says:

How very sad that Mr. Larson died right before the premiere! That's just one of those tragic things that - very tragic things.

I've always liked this song, I really need to see "Rent" one of these days. Maybe I should put the movie in my NetFlix queue!

  1. lucy says:

a great play...movie...sound track and song! Good take on the word. Mine is up!

  1. I was lucky enough to see the live show in Toronto awhile back. Your song choice is a great look at the idea of 'season'.

And is this your own wording?
'Marriage is a contract entered into by consenting and capable parties with benefits, responsibilities, and legal protections.'

I have to say I really like it. It captures the true sentiment of marriage without any of the exclusionary wording of 'traditional' definitions.

  1. Linda: It is sad, but fortunately he left us with this wonderful work.

    Lucy: I'll cruise on by.

Julia: I paraphrased that line from several things I've read since the election. I think it's right.

  1. The lyrics are good... just wish I could hear it as well :)

  1. j says:

Beautiful song! And a great take on the challenge.

  1. I got distracted by the thought of Jesse L. Martin. Sorry.

  1. I noticed three producer names of note: Robert De Niro, and Chris Columbus and Mark Radcliff of Harry Potter flix.
