Mo's Manic Monday - Wear

Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Don't forget to cruise by MM HQ at the Manic Monday blog. Today's theme is Wear.

When I was younger, there were only two possible careers I wanted for myself and they both required me to wear a uniform.

One was an NFL uniform.


The other was the uniform of a Marine.


Unfortunately, a severe injury prevented me from wearing either. So I picked another path and eventually ended up in a career that didn't require me to wear any kind of uniform at all. Not even the corporate blue suit with white shirt and red power tie.

    Life is often like that. It tends to steer its own way at times. In many ways, I was the exact opposite. Never dreamt of wearing a uniform ever, and ended up wearing one for 9 years.

    I never got what I wanted most either, but life has a way of surprising us.

    Is there anything more handsome than a man in dress uniform? Hubba hubba!

    When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a registered nurse -probably because that's what my Mom was. It never came to pass but for many years, I did wear a white uniform -but it was a waitress uniform. Well, it's still taking care of people though -or at least that's what I used to tell my older daughter when she started waitressing at the same place where I worked - "Somebody has to take care of those babies!" (And trust me, some of the customers at that place were just that -babies! Big ones, though.

    Iisn't it amazing... the twists and turns of life.

    I wouldn't change them because they made me who/what I am today (and I'm quite satisfied with that).

    When we're younger, we think there can only be one or two possibilities for our lives. It's when we are forced to make new choices that we really see how numerous our opportunities can be.

    Life seems to be treating you well, though, so it seems that wearing what you want to work was meant to be. So...have you worn one of those uniforms for Halloween?

    It's funny - I wore service type uniforms often in my working life (staffing theatres, etc.) and quite enjoyed not having to worry about a wardrobe. But I love my current job and our relaxed policy. No power suits either - except for the CEO, and he has to. LOL!

    I think you would have been a fabulous football player and a brave Marine. So there.

    There is something very seductive about wearing a uniform. I never had any specific desire to wear one when I was a kid; I ended up wearing a couple. I will admit that the army officer’s uniform I wore was no where as nifty as the Marine dress uniform you dreamed about. The robe—alb—“dress” (as my sons called it)—that is wore for years was rather nice, as was wearing a clerical collar to an Italian restaurant where I was usually thought to be a Catholic priest and usually ended up getting a grand table and excellent service.

    Shame you never got to wear the uniforms you dreamed of. I know it's not the same but you could have a fancy dress party and hire the uniforms for the evening! :)

    I telecommute, so my "uniform" consists of whatever is a) clean and b) comfortable - not necessarily in that order!

    shit happens, trav...

    i wore a uniform for a while, army cadets... just over a year... when i found it just as crooked as nearly all things i've encountered :(

    It seems like almost every job I've had has required me to wear a uniform - from my Air Force blues and khakis to my current job with a maroon shirt and blue EMS pants. It definitely makes it easy to figure out what to wear and I've found the combat/EMS boots to be quite comfortable!

    WT4W: My Lady would say a man in a tux.

    Jeni: My grandmother was a waitress for a time before she married.

    Lois: If I could, I would change the circumstances of that injury to give me back my choice.

    Songbird: It's the forced part that is still difficult. I want my choice back.

    Polly: When I was little I wore a replica football uniform.

    Noe Noe: Not me in that tie!

    Julia: I work at a career I enjoy.

    Ivanhoe: I really enjoy the Silent Drill Team.

    Nick: I was definitely drawn to the Marine uniform, but moreso to the service and opportunity.

    Akelamalu: It would be too hard for me to do that, but it's a nice thought.

    Charles: The NFL was a dream that probably wouldn't have happened, but without the injury I would have been a Marine.

    Tink: Comfy is good!

    Mary: Awwww shucks!

    Meri: I did indeed.

    Laughingwolf: You're right about that.

    Linda: And you don't have to worry about color coordinating.

    Lana: I guess so.

    Your post made me think... when I was a little girl I wanted to work in a bank. I did that.

    I wanted to teach school and be a ballerina. Well, I taught dance and did perform on stage through dance recitals. So I sort of did that.

    I wanted to be a Mommy. I am doing that.

    My goals weren't lofty but I got to do the things that I wanted - that is actually pretty cool. The things that DIDN'T happen for me took the form of relationships and friendships that fell apart. Those are sore spots.

    Have you ever told us the circumstances?

    I'm sure it's gutting to have your choices whipped away.

    I might as well tell you that an office suit and tie wouldn't do it for me - not worth missing that one! Actually none of those would be my choice of uniform. It's firemen all the way for me.

    I studied Architecture in college and ended up wearing the Blue uni after all that. I have to admit I love my job but I miss the creativity of my first chosen occupation. But I do have it as a back up as walking seems to be very dangerous for me! lol
