Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Don't forget to cruise by MM HQ at the Manic Monday blog. Today's theme is Wet.

In 1919, the 18th Ammendment and the Volstead Act made the sale of alcohol illegal in the US. Prohibition was in effect, making this a dry country on the surface and providing the impetus for organized crime and underground speak easy clubs.

On 22 March 1933, FDR signed the Beer and Wine Revenue Act to levy federal tax on all alcoholic beverages. In December of 1933, the 21st Amendment was passed to repeal Prohibition.

Wetting one's whistle was once again legal.

Oh, look at that poor kitty!

I for one am very glad FDR signed the Beer and Wine Act, especially the wine! :]

If it wasn't for prohibition, who knows if NASCAR would have been born. I'm currently reading "Driving With The Devil" and it's a fascinating account. Moonshine and left turns :)

  1. Oh, wow... it may have been in 1919, but I'm still amazed nevertheless

Some days I feel like that cat...without any alcohol enhancement.

  1. I often wonder if Mafia would have got such a foothold if not for that stupid act.

  1. Gene Bach says:

That is one ticked off cat!!!! LOL!

    Great picture!

Anthony, I wonder about that, too!

  1. Both Will Think 4 Wine and I are easy to keep employed. Just keep filling the glass as an incentive. Great post.

  1. December of 1933 ... a great month.

If our government have their way there'll be prohibition here before too long. They've stopped everyone smoking in public now they want to stop them drinking!

    That poor cat! :(

  1. Our country is so weird where alcohol laws are concerned. Blue laws vary from state to state, but I gotta wonder what the point of some of them is. I mean, I cannot buy beer in New York at 11:59 am on a Sunday, but by 12:01 pm (TWO MINUTES LATER!), suddenly it's ok!

    dunno!

Ah, Prohibition! The time when one could make a fortune running rum...so long as one didn't get caught!

  1. Cheesy says:

    Hehehehe... wet...
    CHEERS!

  1. WT4W: Indeed!

Ann: I was going to mention NASCAR. I haven't read that book, but I've seen plenty of history channel specials.

Terra: It was a well-meaning but not a very bright law.

    Drilleraa: No kidding!

Anthony: I suspect they would have gone into drug traffic sooner.

    Gene: I know! I can't imagine bathing a cat.

    NNG: I've always thought so.

Lois: It might have slowed them down, but there was so much gambling and other nefarious trade.

    Jamie: LOL!

    Southern: A most excellent month.

Akelamlau: It can't hold. There's only so much control the government can take before people say enough.

    Tink: Now that's just nuts!

    Meri: That's right!

Cheesy: Well, there were a couple of different ways I could have gone. LOL!

  1. DrillerAA says:

Today was one of those days! Actually, the cat looks better than I feel.

Honestly, I'm not exactly sure what they thought they were going to accomplish when they passed Prohibition to begin with. After all, where there's a will - or a still - there's a way! I think it probably caused more problems than it solved in the long run.

  1. Prohibition was a very stange idea. Silly government - don't they know that as soon as you prohibit something, you instantly make it an intrigue for the most normal human?
