Vote Earth!

Today is Vote Earth Day. What does it mean?

In a nutshell, turn off all your lights and unplug any unused appliances for one hour today at 20:30 EDT, or 17:30 PDT. You can learn more by clicking here.

I learned about this from my good friend Meribah at The Puppy's Place. And I'm going to take it a step further by keeping my lights off all day. I'm just going to have my laptop and my tv going, and the fridge. Everything else gets turned off and unplugged.

Whatever you think about global climate change, a vote for conservation is never wasted.

Well, North Carolina was healthy and way too much for Gonzaga. The Zags could only hang with the Tarheels for about 8 minutes or so, and then UNC took control of the game and won big.

I did get the other 3 picks correct, which makes me 7 out of 8 for the last two days. All of my picks to make the Final Four are still in it too. I've got #1 Louisville vs #1 UConn on one side and #1 Pittsburgh vs #2 Oklahoma on the other side.

Here are last night's results.

Midwest region

#1 Louisville beat #12 Arizona, 103-64
#2 Michigan St beat #3 Kansas, 67-62

South region

#2 Oklahoma beat #3 Syracuse, 84-71
#1 North Carolina beat #4 Gonzaga, 98-77

So our regional final match ups go like this...

Saturday

West region: #1 UConn vs #3 Missouri
East region: #1 Pittsburgh vs #3 Villanova

Sunday

Midwest region: #1 Louisville vs #2 Michigan St
South region: #1 North Carolina vs #2 Oklahoma

Edit: So DrillerAA pointed out that I'm an idiot, although he did it in his characteristically nice way. I rushed this post late last night, and mis-counted and mis-identified teams and conferences. It's actually 4 from the Big East, 2 from the Big 12, 1 from the ACC, and 1 from the Big 10. Still no party crashers this year.

  1. I'm glad to bump into your Earth Hour reminder here, Travis. I'll be in candlelight tonight!

By the way, there's an award with your name on it over at my place.

  1. You can count on me. I am the Queen of consevation and recycling. There will alot of clean up going on in our area today.
Mother Earth is in our hands.

I think that's 4 big east, 2 Big 12, 1 ACC and 1 Big 10. As long as my Soo0ners stay in the hunt, I'm good.
Louisville really looks unbeatable right not and UConn is taking no prisoners. I think OU can take NC, but I don't know about winning it all.

  1. I thought it was to run around the world at 8:30 local time? Like you, I'm just keeping things to a bare minimum today.

  1. Meribah says:

I knew I could count on you. Good on yuh for taking Earth Hour one (or two or three) steps further! :)

{{{Trav}}}Just wanted to stop by and say thank you for visiting Mike's new blog. You, Ann and the rest really came through with the love.

    Muah!

Hopefully when he ships out here in a few days he'll have a good readership.

    Thanks again.

  1. We were without electricity a couple of times this week. I wonder if that counts toward Earth Day?

  1. Cherie says:

Yup, all lights will be off at my place tonight. Actually, they're all off now. lol And congrats on your picks. You're definitely doing better than anyone I've run across.

Do you think that the Somali pirates got the memo about Earth Hour? Probably not.

  1. Anndi says:

One of the great things about this is, some people might actually get to see the stars they never see because of light pollution. We'll be doing candlelight stuff.. and a Harry potter movie marathon.

    Isn't the puppy the coolest?

  1. I have that on my list of things to do for the day!

  1. Akelamalu says:

I'll be going out at 8 p.m. (GMT)but will turn off everything possible before I go. :)

  1. Julia: I'll be by shortly to check that out. Thanks!

    NNG: Indeed she is.

Drilleraa: Geeez! I posted late after a very long day. Thanks for the correction. I'll get that fixed.

Jamie: I may have made an error with the time. But I've got all my stuff turned off for the day expect for laptop and tv. And thanks for the link!

Meri: Thank you for posting about it. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have seen it.

Hope: I've got a special place set aside in my heart for Marines.

Charles: I think you get extra credit for that.

Cherie: I resisted the urge to pick wacky upsets this time around and that worked well for me.

Drilleraa: There will always be some that don't get it.

Ann: Now you've given me an idea. After the basketball games, we'll have to pick something for a marathon too. And the puppy rocks!

    Starr: We're doing it now!

    Akelamalu: Good on ya!

so who's going to win it all?

  1. I intentionally lived in candlelight for most of the last 5 years I was in Canada, actually. My power bills were always the minimum mandatory; $15/mo.
Considering how often (& for how long,) our power goes out around here, I think we've already paid our Earth "hour" dues, many times over. I appreciate the sentiment, though.

My lights will definitely be off! Truthfully, I'll also most likely be asleep but still...

  1. Happy Earth Day, Travis! Enjoy the candlelight! :)

  1. Well, Villanova knocked out Pittsburgh, who I noticed you had picked for the Final Four. I had them picked not only for the Final Four but winning the championship (so much for my bracket).

  1. Lois: Well, I thought it was going to be Pitt but they are out now. So I'll have to make a revised pick as soon as today's results are in.

Lana: We try to keep our power usage to a minimum. After living in California for most of my life, conservation became second nature.

WT4W: We made it through the entire day without using our lights. I just wish the weather hadn't been so gloomy.

Mary: I hope you did too!

Southern: I had Pitt too and my bracket is busted. They just didn't play like the same impressive team I watched through the Big East season.

  1. My dad was thrilled about the Tarheels but slept through most of it. If not for you, I wouldn't know what is going on in the world of sports at all! Thanks for the update.

I remembered the lights out thingy 30 minutes prior....then i forgot!
