Hey marketing pukes...it's still Gatorade

I've never really liked Gatorade. I always thought it had a horrible after taste and I still felt thirsty after drinking it. You shouldn't have to wash down a sports drink with a water chaser.

I used to try it every once in awhile to see if it had gotten any better, but it hadn't. Given new flavors wacky names that marketing guys think are cool doesn't help if the product still makes your mouth feel sticky and stale after you drink it.

And this latest marketing idea of changing the name of the product to "G"...more silliness.

I say all of that for context. Because this stuff...

...is GREAT!

We have a beverage fridge at the office. After I got back from my walk yesterday I didn't want soda or juice...or anything sticky sweet like that...and the Vitamin water hadn't been re-stocked. Yes, I'm aware I could have gotten a cup or two of filtered tap water. The Vitamin water is tasty and I feel refreshed after I drink it.

But there wasn't any VW. I spotted this G2 Fruit Punch sports drink in the fridge and decided to give it a try. It really does taste like fruit punch. And I thought it was actually more refreshing than the VW.

So now I can hydrate with a tasty beverage.

I still think calling the product "G" is silly. But thanks anyway Gatorade. You finally made something I like.

I like Vitamin water but it does remind me of what my Mom would do when we were kids. We'd buy our juice in frozen concentrate. When she made it she'd always put way more water in than it called for. The result was a watered down lighter version of the juice.

And that's what it reminds me of! And I can't believe I pay so much for something that could be so cheap to make!

My Mom used to economize any way she could and Kool-aid was one of the things she used to make on the "cheap" by putting next to no sugar in it. I grew up accustomed to it that way and though I put some sugar in it, I don't add very much. My son though, when he was a kid would make kool-aid with the full amount of sugar the package calls for and the girls and I could tell immediately that it was his handwork there -way, way too sweet! But as to the Gatorade, I never cared for it at all for pretty much the same taste issues you noted. However, I'd be willing to give this new stuff a shot, based on your evaluation of it -since our taste buds appear to be in the same corner.

I've never heard of Gatorade. Anyway I don't drink soda and stuff - water, tea, wine or beer -those are my tipples!

I'm a plain water gal - cold and filtered. I only buy bottled water to have on hand in an emergency. Water, coffee, wine and the occasional beer on a really hot day.

Not a fan of G2 but I looooove Vitamin Water. I have at least one "XXX" or "Revive" Vitamin Water every day. Cheers Trav!!

  1. YOu're right. If I had ever been a fan of Gatoraid I'd stop drinking it now just because of the ridiculous new name.

  1. LOL!!!!! My feelings exactly - 'marketing pukes' - LOL!! G2 'silliness'. After many years of continuing to try it and still not liking it, it's hilarious that you tried it yet again. And what a twisty ending to the tale.

I like just plain old water.

  1. Nice to know they can make something that doesn't leave you more thirsty than when you started. Too bad they hired the goof troop to name it.

The non carbonated options out there are absolutely absurd! Yup.... nearly as absurd as the names are that these marketing people create!

I buy cheapo sugar free walmart brand Koolaid and fill my glass halfway that pour filtered water in the rest of the way. Except for the peach ice tea flavored one...i drink that full strength!

I prefer a V8 as far as drinking something for nutritional value, but will try this G thing...my diabetic uncle once drank two jugs of Gatorade while we were out on the sailboat and he got so thirsty we had to end the day just so he could get rehydrated (some thirst quencher!).

I've been meaning to get over here to see your blog, but couldn't find the post with your link on it 'til just now - I'll visit often!

  1. I've not tasted either always preferring plain water... but I shall give G a try if it ever gets sold here

  1. I'm just a regular water girl.
But I bet my Little T will like it!

The orange flavor G is really good too. It tastes JUST like the Orange-ade we drank in elementary school. It quenches my thirst and takes me on a stroll down memory lane, all in one gulp!

Just make sure if you drink the yellow stuff it really *IS* "G"...

I think they're trying to appeal to younger, more urban audience.

  1. Haven't tasted the G2 yet, but like you I think it's silly to change the name. Especially something that was as well known as Gatorade. It's like Coke wanting to change their name.

  1. I like Propel diluted 50%...It's a little bit too sweet, but with water, it's perfect..

and would alumni of Un. of Florida Gators think?

  1. DrillerAA says:

Oddly enough, I am one of those that actually likes the taste of original Gatorade especially if it is ice-cold.

  1. I read the reason they are now changing the name and some of the formulas is because the inventor passed away last year. While alive he did not allow it.

...being coach of the Gators and all.

(do you know if that is true?)

  1. I agree with you on all counts. I've always HATED Gatorade, but I was given "G2" on the few occasions I've had a "reaction" (nausea, light-headedness, loss of fluids, etc) while donating plasma. I thought it was very refreshing and tasty!

  1. Kanani: I do like the VW, but it's good to know that I have this choice.

    Jeni: We enjoyed Kool-aid too.

Akelamalu: It's an American sports drink. And I know I should drink more water, but I also know it takes a bit more to hydrate after excercise.

Barb: I have to have my water very very cold.

Matt: When it's stocked, I like the Revive or the Vitamin C.

Charles: HA! The reverse effect of a marketing campaign.

Julia: Well, they caught me thirsty when water just wasn't enough.

Thom: Me too, but sometimes I want a little extra.

    Jeff: No kidding.

Julie: I've never developed a taste for the flavored iced teas.

Mike: I don't care for regular V8, but I love the V8 Fusion juices. Welcome!

Terra: It might be worth a try.

    Jay: Not me!

NNG: There are days when I just can't get enough water.

Jennifer: I haven't tried the orange yet.

Lois: HA! And I'm sure you're right in your assessment.

John: The commercials for it are ridiculous too. Or maybe that's just me being out of touch with what's cool.

Teamster: No kidding...the G chomp? LOL!

Drilleraa: Really? Well I guess there have to be a lot more folks that do like it, otherwise it wouldn't be a leading sports drink.

Katherine: Evidently the story of the origins of the drink is true. The Florida coach was frustrated by his players performance and asked the team doctor to come up with something. But I don't know what prompted the rebranding.

Clancy: And that's the key. If it's refreshing and tasty, then that's the drink for me.

  1. Did you know that Gatorade's more damaging to teeth than Coke (or any other soda)? Always a trade off...

  1. I haven't tried it, but I felt about Gatorade the same way you did. I have had PowerAde (made by Coke) once in a while, and my daughter prefers it after a basketball game. We don't stock it at home, though. We buy one when the need arises.

Our drinks of choice around here are water, milk, and juice.
