West Side Story was released in 1961. It's tough to pick a favorite moment from this film, because it's full of favorite moments. But if you took away all my CAKE and wouldn't give it back unless I said...then it would be this scene.

The tragic rumble has lead to the death of Riff, the Jets' leader. Bernardo, the Sharks' leader, stabs him. Then Tony, his attempts at peacemaking gone totally wrong, stabs Bernardo. The Jets retreat to their garage hide out, and have to learn how to be cool to face the coming questions about the deadly fight between the two gangs.

Choreographed by Jerome Robbins, this piece is raw and powerful. The dancers are:

Ice, played by Tucker Smith
Action, played by Tony Mordente
A-rab, played by David Winters
Baby John, played by Eliot Feld
Snowboy, played by Bert Michaels
Tiger, played by David Bean
Joyboy, played by Rober Banas
Big Deal, played by Anthony Teague
Mouthpiece, played by Harvey Evans
Gee-Tar, played by Tommy Abbott
Graziella, played by Gina Trikonis
Velma, played by Carole D'Andrea

Fabulous Trav - a truly great Musical. :)

  1. You know, for all the musicals I've seen in my life (a lot) I've never watched this in its entirety. I think I'll have to see if the library has a copy.

    NNG: It's a good 'un.

V: I always knew you had class.

    Kanani: Yup yup!

Mimi: Ruh-roh. I knew I was in trouble. I must work on memes, especially since I have no dancing shows to use as excuses for another month.

Charles: I think it's worth the time.

There are just way too many good dances for me to pick one out of this play though I think I have always been partial to "America" on the rooftop. Now that's dancing!!

  1. West Side Story - wow, a classic. Brings back fond memories of childhood, watching this on sleepy summer afternoons with my mom and sisters.
