Wrapping up Week 1

I do not like the double header premier of Monday Night Football. As you know, I live on the west coast. The first game starts too early and the second game ends too late.

And the second pronouncing crew of Mike Greenberg, Steve Young, and Mike Golic isn't really very good.

But my Raiders sure played well defensively against San Diego last night. They were physical and fast and knocked the Chargers completely out of rhythm. It's too bad the offense isn't quite ready to hold up its end yet. The running game is solid behind a pretty good offensive line. The receivers are young but speedy. It looks like the missing piece is quarterback. JeMarcus Russell needs to improve his accuracy and be more consistent.

He did throw a beautiful ball on 4th and 15 with 2:34 to play...57 yards to rookie WR Louis Murphy for the go ahead TD. That made me think that just maybe we could pull it off. But the defense that played so well all game couldn't hold on the final drive. There were a lot of things to like about the way my Raiders played. But I would have liked to win the game.

I despise San Diego and there are no moral victories in professional sports.

I can report that I did extremely well with my picks, starting the season 12-4.

I can also report that the Rockies lost last night while my Dodgers beat the Pirates, pushing the NL West division lead back to 4 games. It pains me to say it, but thank you Tim Lincecum and the Giants.

  1. I'm not much of a Jemarkus russell fan. Seems to me he's been giving opportunity on opportunity but I haven't seen a lot out of him yet.

    Hi Trav,

just had to pop over and tell you - Nigel Lythgoe must have heard me begging - he's bringing SYTYCD to the BBC!! They're starting auditions in Oct for screening in January. I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself! :)

New England pulled theirs out by the skin of their teeth last night - whew!!

  1. First, there is only one fan who has the right to really and completely bitch about his team...and that's someone who lives in Detroit. The rest of you can grumble, but I never want to hear anyone try bitching about a team until they've had to tolerate the Lions.

Now, about the two games on Monday...hell...I miss Monday Night Football on ABC...I miss that special feel that ONE game had. I think two games on Monday night is too much.

    I also miss John Madden.

  1. Charles: I have to agree at this point. He's got to improve and do it fast.

    Jaye: That's fantastic!

    Linda: They sure did.

Stewart: You have a point about Detroit. Lions fans have pretty firm ownership of the term long suffering.

  1. I didn't like the Monday two game gig either....the timing was off...and having two games seems to dilute the whole monday night experience.

The Teamster (and fellow Dodger fan) was thanking the Giants then too....

  1. Normally I don't mind the double header MNF, but by this time I was burned out on football given the dissatisfying results of the games we watched. And I agree with you on the second broadcast team. Bleh. Most of all, I LOATHE the Chargers. Ergh....
