The word for today is...

Busy!

Egads!  We had a weeks' worth of lull at work and then we got slammed.  It's good to have stuff to do, but dangit anyway!  It's knocked us on our heels just a little bit.

I don't have much else to tell you on this second day of February.  Yup...we're one month down in 2011 already.

Oh I know what I was going to tell you.  I had cause to use a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference today.  I was fixing my lunch in the break room, when two of my co-workers wandered in.  I heard something about "number of orders processed this week", and then the number 42.

So I said, with just the correct amount of flair and flourish, "The answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything!!"

They both stared at me like I'd lost my mind.

It's a lonely feeling when you're the only one in the room who gets the HG reference.

**sigh**

And Douglas Adams (1952-2001), sage wit and creator of one of the funniest books you'll ever read, said...

"He attacked everything in life with a mix of extraordinary genius and naive incompetence, and it was often difficult to tell which was which."

"I love deadlines.  I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by."

"There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.  There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

"A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."

"For a moment, nothing happened.  Then, after a second of so, nothing continued to happen."

"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?"

Put some wit in your Wednesday!  And remember...Don't Panic!

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Sounds like you're enjoying being busy. :)

  1. Amazing how fast January passed and I didn't get many things done I hoped to have accomplished.

  1. Marsha says:

Did you hear that Derek won't be in the spring version of DWTS?? He's taking time out to do a movie...but says he'll be back in the fall.

  1. Why do I think there are many times you make a reference and the mass public does not get it. You are one smart cookie dude

Trav: Thanks for putting wit into my Wednesday. Too bad they didn't get your HG reference - oh well. Someone in our office used an obscure movie reference a couple days ago. I didn't know the movie, but her quote was great!

This reminds me that I was walking through the ambulance bay on my way up to dispatch a couple of weeks ago and two of the EMTs stopped me to ask me what the answer to the universe was. I immediately said "42" and was rewarded with a "Yes! I told you that Linda would know that!" Amanda could have answered that one, too.

Been a very long time since I read HG but I do remember thinking it was quite possibly one of the funniest books I'd ever read.

  1. Lois: I don't know about smarter. Maybe just more keen on certain reading opportunities.

Akelamalu: I guess you could say that.

    Charles: Defer, I say.

Marsha: I did hear that. And I also found out that the cast will be announced on 28 Feb, with the premier following on 21 March. YAY!

    V: Awww shucks.

GGG: I think it's all about the timing. Sometimes even if you don't know the reference, it can still be funny if the timing is dead on.

Linda: One of the guys I used to work with had a sign at his desk that read, "If anybody asks, the answer is 42".

    "...nothing continued to happen." Ha!

Busy - hey I KNOW that word. Well. TOO well lately. Things are looking up though!

The other day our vet took something I said and turned it into a Monty Python quote. I was on it immediately and we cracked up. I love random moments like that.

I, myself, have not read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but many of my friends have, so I have been blessed to hear many of the great quotes in the past. However, I must admit that I was unaware that the answer to the universe was 42. ;)

  1. THat's the third time HG has come up in my life in the past three weeks. It's a sign. I need to read it. :)

    Happy Wednesday... almost Thursday.

  1. TopChamp says:

ha! A pupil quoted that to me this week in a lesson. He's about 12.

Busy is good - for a while. It's very nice when you can see the end too.

  1. Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

You sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is.

    (Yes, I'm a fan.)
