Ass hattery on display.

Senate candidate Todd Akin from Missouri said about pregnancies resulting from rape, "It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare.  If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.  But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something:  I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, not attacking the child."

Yes, some people can be that stupid.

Eva Ensler has written a poignant and outstanding response to Mr Akin and his utter ignorance and insensitivity.  Ms Ensler writes, in part, "You used the expression 'legitimate' rape as if to imply there were such a thing as 'illegitimate' rape.  Let me try to explain to you what that does to the minds, hearts, and souls of the millions of women on this planet who experience rape.  It is a form of re-rape.  The underlying assumption of your statement is that women and their experiences are not to be trusted.  That their understanding of rape must be qualified by some higher, wiser authority.  It delegitimizes and undermines and belittles the horror, invasion, desecration they experienced.  It makes them feel as alone and powerless as they did at the moment of rape."

Whether its her date, her husband, a casual acquaintance, a member of her family, or a total stranger, if a woman doesn't consent and you go ahead and do what you want anyway, you have committed rape.  We don't need any qualifying words like "forcible" or "legitimate".  Rape is rape.  And women know when they have been raped, without having it defined for them by jackasses like Mr Akin.

No one but the victim should be allowed to choose what to do if pregnancy occurs from rape.

Ummm... yeah, Mr. Akin..LET'S. Let's assume that didn't work or something because it doesn't, you dipshidiot.

"legitimate rape"... Oh, I'd love to hear his definition of rape.

Imagine how proud his mother must be. Not.

Is he really running for Senator? I'm astonished to read that he's a six-term Congressman.

There's no amount of back-pedaling that can make up for thatguy's comment. That kind of thing makes me lose ALL my training in finding proper grammatical substitutions for profanity. Sheesh!

I'm shaking my head... don't like this man's comment at all. Rape is rape

Thank you, Trav! Very well-written words about a topic it is more than evident Rep. Akin knows absolutely zilch about! And to think he services on the Science Committee in the House? Ridiculous, that is. Some people should never have been given the ability to speak -and he's one of 'em!
