Steve Sabol, a principal founder of NFL Films, died earlier in the week.  He was 69.

I could tell you a lot about what NFL Films did.  How it revolutionized the way football hi-lights are presented.  How it humanized the players.  How a simple hi-light reel could become poetry.  How the greats of the game from years past live on and become known to new generations because of NFL Films.

But why do that when you can see for yourself?

NFL Films put hi-lights to music and made them interesting to any class of sports fan.  These reels taught me to watch football differently than I might otherwise have done.  They gave me new eyes into the game.

Steve Sabol played football.  He understood the power and the violence inherent in the sport.  But he also respected and understood how to display the athletic grace of the men who play the game.  And just to keep everyone honest, he showed us the silly side of football too.

Rest Mr Sabol.  Your voice will be missed.

It certainly amazing what he did. Sometimes I prefer to watch the highlights to the actual game, and to think that it was all because of what Steve Sabol started.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear that. He was a favorite of mine. Loved his narration on the football follies shows.

I have to agree with those who think he was very good at what he did. Now wasn't the shadow of the flyover an interesting perspective? I will miss his work. GGG
