NCAA Tournament Round 3

In 2011, 6 double digit seeds won games in the round of 64.  Four of them advanced to the round of 16.  One of them, VCU, made it all the way to the Final Four.  The championship game featured 8 seed Butler.

In 2012, 9 double digit seeds won in the round of 64.  That included a couple of 15s and a 13.  Two 12s beat 5s.  But only 3 of the double digits advanced to the round of 16 and none advanced to a regional final.  The lowest seed in the Final Four was a 4.

This year we have 8 double digit seeds advancing to the round of 32.

There was potential for upsets today, but order was seemingly restored in the early games as all the favored seeds advanced without much resistance.  Then came 12 seed Oregon controlling 4 seed St Louis for the first upset of the day.

6 seed Butler and 3 seed Marquette played a wild one that came down to the final shot.  The Bulldogs missed and the Golden Eagles survived the upset bid.

Then 9 seed Wichita State did what underdogs need to do...they shot the lights out from the 3 point line.  Gonzaga got the yips late, and so the Bulldogs are the first 1 seed out of the tournament.

4 Michigan beat 5 VCU
3 Michigan St beat 6 Memphis
1 Louisville beat 8 Colorado St
6 Arizona beat 14 Harvard
12 Oregon beat 4 St Louis
3 Marquette beat 6 Butler
9 Wichita St beat 1 Gonzaga
4 Syracuse beat 12 California

So only 1 double digit made the round of 16 yesterday.  Five more have a chance today, with at least one guaranteed in the game featuring 12 seed Mississippi against 13 seed LaSalle.

Tell me your West bracket isn't busted.

I must admit, that I don't watch enough to have a favorite for each match-up, so I look at the rankings. I love good underdog stories! GGG

  1. My brackets are all in shambles, although I still have IU winning it all, so there is hope. :)

Now that my Dawgs are out (SOB!), I can watch and cheer on my childhood #1 team.

    GO HOOSIERS!
