I may have mentioned that I enjoy history. Today I've decided to share 13 events from this day in history.


1. 4 Jan 1955: In an effort to compete with TBirds and Corvettes, Packard introduced it's first V-8, the Carribean. To see a picture of this beautiful car, go here:

2. 4 Jan 1964: Mary Sullivan is a victim of Albert deSalvo, otherwise known as the Boston Strangler. Sullivan was the last victim that deSalvo murdered after raping her in her apartment. Later in the year he did not kill one of his rape victims, and she was able to call police. Although he confessed to the crimes to a cellmate, deSalvo was never convicted of the Boston Strangler rape-murders. He was killed in prison while serving a life sentence for other rapes.

3. 4 Jan 1935: "Stop! Look! Listen" by jazz violinist Joe Venuti becomes the very first #1 song on the very first pop music chart published by Billboard magazine.

4. 4 Jan 1999: The debut of the Euro as the common unit of currency in Europe.

5. 4 Jan 1785: The birth of Jacob Grimm, elder of the Grimm Brothers, who wrote such stories as "Hansel and Gretel", "Snow White", and "Little Red Riding Hood" among others.

6. 4 Jan 1847: Samuel Colt sells his first revolvers to the United States Government, helping resucitate his failing company. The first contract was for 1,000 .44 caliber revolvers.

7. 4 Jan 1896: For Tina - Utah becomes the 45th state.

8. 4 Jan 1965: President Lyndon B. Johnson makes his "Great Society" State of the Union speech, promising sweeping legislative reforms in civil rights, healthcare, education, and the environment. In the same speech, the President reaffirms the US commitment in South Vietnam, suggesting that US security is tied directly to securing peace in Asia.

9. 4 Jan 1944: In an effort to assist partisan guerilla fighters throughout Western Europe in their struggles against Nazi Germany and its Axis allies, the US begins air dropping tons of supplies.

10. 4 Jan 1996: General Motors announces the release of the EV-1, an electric car selling through Saturn dealerships. The EV-1 debuted in the fall of 1996 and is the best selling electric consumer car of its time.

11. 4 Jan 2006: For Ann - "Top Indian and Pakistani players will be seen in action during the Premier Hockey League (PHL) that commences here. . ." We're talking hockey in India and Pakistan!! Wooooooooooo! Read about it here:

12. 4 Jan 1809: Louis Braille was born on this date in Coupvray, France. He is the inventor of the Braille system by which blind and other visually impaired people can read and write. Read more here:

13. 4 Jan 1970: The Beatles record for the last time together at EMI studios. Later in the year, they release their final studio album, Let It Be, in both the US and UK. At year's end, Paul McCartney files suit against his bandmates to dissolve the legal partnership of the group.

    How cool that you mentioned the Grimm brothers! It reminded be of a beautiful hardbound duo of books I had as a child. One book being by the Brothers Grimm and the other by Hans Christian Anderson.

    What a cool list!!! :) Every time I visit you guys, I learn something! If I'm not careful, I might get smarter! If that were to happen, boy, will my teenage daughter be disappointed to learn that I am not COMPLETELY clueless. ;)
