Guitars guitars guitars!!

The lovely and talented Empress Bee (of the High Seas) tagged me for a Guitar Meme. This exciting new meme was created by the evil and notorious...I mean the clever and humorous Meloncutter.

I must list my 5 favorite songs with lead guitar solos. YES!! A musical meme! But how can I narrow the list to 5? And since dear Bee also tagged my good friend Bond, who has a gazillion records - real vinyl records - and knows a ton more about music than I do, how will I do this without getting a repeat?

Well, I guess the idea is not to stress about it and just pick my five favorites. Uhm...does this rambling introduction count as over-stressing about a meme?

Yeesh! Since there are no wrong answers, here are my 5 selections:

1. Free Bird by Lynryd Skynyrd - Of course this would be at the top of the list. It should be on every list, because it is THE guitar anthem of rock and it has dueling lead guitar solos. I dare you to watch this and not rock your entire body during the solo. It can't be done.

Sorry - got distracted by that masterpiece. This meme could take a long time.

2. Layla by Derek & The Dominos featuring Mr Eric Clapton - There are so many Clapton solos to choose from, but I think this one is my favorite to hear live.

3. Pride and Joy by Stevie Ray Vaughan - I remember I was turning into the parking lot on my way back to work from lunch when I heard on the radio that he had been killed. I sat in the car for at least 20 minutes. I felt like I'd been punched in the stomach.

4. Samba Pa Ti by Carlos Santana - This is seduction by guitar.

5. Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry - The solo of solos for a guitar player, done by the master himself.

Sorry about all the video, but I just had to share. Now I'm supposed to tag 3 others for this and I think I'll tag some of my fellow music lovers. So Anndi, Julie, and Songbird, y'all have been tagged.

  1. oh trav i knew you would be good at this! and honey? there is no cake in here. just sayin'...

    smiles, bee

  1. Steven says:

Ooooo...this is a really hard one. Especially because, for some reason, I really dislike electric guitar solos. This is one meme I'd like to avoid. It's a good one, but still, I'd like to avoid it.

  1. Travis says:

Bee: Thanks for the tag! I liked this meme a lot. I guess I'll have to put a cake in my side bar for ya!

Steven: I love guitar music. The most difficult thing for me was narrowing the choices to five.

  1. Dana says:

LAYLA! My absolute favorite song of all time!

  1. Bond says:

I will be getting to mine on Tuesday. As tomorrow is Mother's Day and then Monday is the Matinee... Already to go, but can't override my post to Moms...

  1. wolfbaby says:

I knew you had class this just confirms it;)

  1. Turnbaby says:

Awesome!!! I love them all but you are spot on with describing Santana's as "seduction by guitar".

I thought about you last night as I ate this incredibly moist dark chocolate cake with icing that tasted just like Oreo filling . It was worth every calorie MMMMMMMM

  1. Matt-Man says:

Buddy Holly, Peggy Sue...All the licks were down strokes. Pretty Impressive!! Cheers...

  1. Travis says:

    Dana: I did know that!

V: Looking forward to what you come up with.

    Wolfbaby: Thanks!

Turn: OH MY CAKE! THUMP! There was another Santana instrumental I was thinking of, but I couldn't find an example. This one works though.

Matt: Correct Sir. There were so many possibilities for this meme.

  1. Anndi says:

oh... my... You KNOW this is just my kind of assignment! And I get to pull out the guitar Gods on Mother's Day and share it with chicklet who has a stunning new Alvarez guitar.

Love it, Love it, Love it.. oh.. and THUD. It's scary how much we think alike when it comes to this...

Oh goody, goody, goody.. and WOOOO!

Excuse me but I have to go listen to the guitar gods now...

    *does a skippywoooo dance*

  1. Travis says:

Ann: **does the skippywoooo dance with Ann** Glad I could make you giddy!

  1. Santana is magic on strings.

  1. I'll be on this soon. I got tagged by Mo for this as well, and I'm behind on another meme tag.

I'm soooooo lazy these days. I could use the excuse that I've been running around from doctor to lab to doctor, but I won't.

  1. Haven't heard that Santana in awhile. Nice.

  1. JAM says:

This is a great set. I LOVE me some guitar solos.

I read an interview with Carlos Santan a couple of years ago, and he said that he practices a minimum of four hours a day, every day. I thought, man, he's been playing for decades and is still practicing four hours a day?
