Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Today's theme is Drop. Don't forget to visit MM HQ at It's A Blog Eat Blog World.

US Army 82nd Airborne

Water bombers

This is the Berlin Airlift Monument in Berlin-Tempelhof, dedicated to the 39 British and 31 American airmen killed during the massive effort to drop supplies to the citizens of Berlin who found themselves cut off by the Russians after the end of World War II.

For 321 days in 1948-49, British and American air forces teamed with pilots from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa to make 278,228 flights and drop 2,326,406 tons of food and supplies, including more than 1.5 million tons of coal, to Berlin.

The dedication of the west to this effort was a key step in preventing a complete communist take over of a defeated Germany. To read more of this massive airlift, click here.

  1. Julie: I got lost in parachute videos for about 30 minutes before I remembered why I was looking at them!

    V: Thank you Sir!

    Mags: Awwww shucks darlin!

    Bee & Sarge: We share a love of country and service, a determination to defend liberty, a fierce pride in our warriors, and a need to see them given the proper honor for defending our freedoms. We are diametrically opposed politically, that's all.

    Meri: **drops some scooby snacks to the puppy**

    Dix: The videos are very cool.

    What a great way to do the theme; it's always a pleasure to learn something new from history.

  1. The history of the Berlin Airlift is remarkable both in it's scope and execution. Wonderful execution for the theme of the day.

  1. Linda: Agreed. I do enjoy finding out new things about my favorite subjects.

    Jamie: It's not a part of history I know enough about, so it was nice to do a little research on it.

  1. I never could understand why most people find history "boring." I've always enjoyed it!
    You did a bang-up job with this one!!!
    ~~~Blessings~~~
