Game day observations

Good NFL Sunday morning to y'all!

Here's a quick recap from Saturday's NCAA action.

Well, the Irish offense got a taste of the end zone yesterday. But they still had no chance against Michigan State. So it's the first 0-4 start in Notre Dame football history and Irish eyes are weepy. Things don't get any better next Saturday when they travel to Purdue. The Boilermakers are 4-0 after beating Minnesota in their Big 10 opener. Basketball season begins Nov 2.

Washington ran up against a pissed off UCLA team last night. Jake Locker was terrific for the Huskies, accounting for over 300 yards on offense. But it just wasn't enough, and he took a pounding. UCLA ended the game with their third team QB, but they didn't need him to make any plays. UW was dead dog beat, and the Bruins had back to back to back big plays to get the win.

Oregon finally put away pesky Stanford. The Cardinal hung 28 points on the Ducks in the second quarter, but Oregon held them scoreless in the second half to get the win.

It looks like the only major upset was Michigan over #10 Penn State.

And congrats to Turn's Kentucky Wildcats, who picked off Arkansas down in Fayetteville in their first major road test in the SEC.

Dammit!! WTF!! The 49ers opened the game with a great drive. They could only get a field goal out of it though. And then they give up a TD on the kick off!

This is a big test for SF today and we're pleased that this is our feature morning game. We also get Seattle hosting Cincinnati this afternoon. We're a little disappointed that we don't have any choices on the other networks today, but at least we have two games in which we have rooting interests.

We're getting rain this morning. But it looks like the forecast is for mostly sunny skies later today and a high of 62. Good football weather.

Fumble!!! Woooooooooooooooooo!! SF recovers on the Steelers 22 yard line. We're loving the 49er defense y'all. But that Steelers defense is tough too and SF can only get another field goal. The 49ers offense has got to figure out how to get the ball into the end zone.

WTF are the Eagles wearing??? I guess it's throw back day in Philly as they celebrate the 75th Anniversary Eagles. You can see pictures of the uniforms here. Despite those ugly unis, Philly is all over Detroit in the first half. After the first two weeks off pathetic offense, the Eagles have run out to a 35-7 lead over the Lions. Hello Detroit? Is your 2-0 start for real? And will the real Eagles please stand up?

There is an advantage to only having one game. Instead of checking in on the other game during commercials we can do some quick Sunday chores, like gather the garbage and sort laundry.

Pittsburgh RB Willie Parker is running so strong. He's bouncing off first contact, running through arm tackles, and getting into the secondary. And the Steelers cap off an excellent drive with a TD to go up 14-6 at the half.

I'm curious about the decision by SF to punt on 4th down with only 5 seconds left in the half. I get that you don't want a bad turnover that might turn into points for Pittsburgh. But I think you have to trust your offense and give your QB a shot in that situation.

That's the morning observations. It's time to get lunch started and get ready for the second half. We'll be back later with some afternoon thoughts.

And don't forget, Turnbaby Talks at her regular time this evening. Tune in at 8pm EST. The site looks a little different, so give yourself a few minutes to get oriented.

I am loving Notre Dame's 0-4 start. I think it's funny that some of the Irish fans continue to dog Tyrone Willingham on one hand and on the other hand will proclaim that Charlie Weis is the second coming of Knute Rockne. When MSU QB Brian Hoyer intentionally fumbled the snap on 4th down and threw a TD pass, I lol for almost a minute!

  1. Malcolm,

Well, I'm not "some" Irish fans. I'm "an" Irish fan.

You don't know me, so you wouldn't have any idea that I was disappointed that ND fired Coach Willingham. I think he is an excellent role model for young men, and he reminds me of coaches I had when I played. It was unfortunate that the administration didn't have patience.

I'm grateful that Coach Willingham is here at UW, and very excited by the program he is building.

    Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for pimping me sugar--I had a good chat with Alan Levy (BTR CEO ) about problems --he says they are working on it .LOL

    Thanks for mentioning the CATS!!

  1. The only time I route against the Irish in regular season play is when they play Purdue.

Nice win for the Bruins...can you hear me Eight Clap? I am SO proud.

and YES WTF!! I was getting ready to go to a funeral...and already in a bad mood...I could not beLIEVE that 98 yard return. I really didn't think the Niners would win...but still....
