Seven things & eight things

Some new blogging friends tagged me with a couple of memes quite some time ago. I'm embarrassed that it's taken me so long to get to these. Sorry friends!

But before I get to the memes, I just wanted to share something I came across yesterday. Central Washington first baseman Mallory Holtman and shortstop Liz Wallace carried Sara Tucholsky of Western Oregon university around the bases when Tucholsky injured her knee rounding first base after hitting the first home run of her career. It was a 3 run shot that helped to eliminate Central Washington from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference post season softball tournament.

Why did they do it? Holtman said, "You deserve it, you hit it over the fence".

And now the memes...

Mike at Rambling Stuff tagged me for the 7 Random Things.

1. I stopped and started college several times before I finally completed my degree in 2000. I took a BS in Business Administration from University of Phoenix extension campus in Woodland Hills CA.

2. I have a football that I won off a radio contest. The question was, Who holds the Oakland Raiders single season record for most interceptions? I knew the answer was Lester Hayes with 13 in 1980. The football is signed by Howie Long, a Hall of Fame defensive end for the Raiders from 1981 to 1993. Long's son Chris was the second selection in the 2008 NFL draft, by the St Louis Rams.

3. I started writing poetry "for real" in 1990. I had written some verses for creative writing classes, but nothing that I ever kept. I never thought that poetry was a medium in which I could express what I had to say. One of these early "real" verses I wrote that had some kind of thought behind it was this one:

What makes a person contrary?
Why do some decry the strange or different view?
Why must I hide and be wary?
What makes me less valid than you?

4. I played one season of Little League baseball when I was about 10, but I didn't like it much.

5. Remember the old style waffle stomper boots? They were all the rage when I was in junior high. I remember whining like a 4 year old for those boots, but my mom wouldn't get them for me because my feet were still growing.

6. My first job was delivery driver for Domino's Pizza. Then I worked up through the ranks to Crew Chief, then to Manager in Training, and finally to Manager of my own store.

7. I am technically a member of the baby boomer generation, which is classified as any person born between 1946 and 1964. I was born in 1964.

Then Jennifer at Dust Bunny Hostage tagged me for the 8 Things.

1. I enjoy musical theatre.

2. I believe that there are some sports uniforms that should never be altered from the classic style. These include the Dodgers and Yankees in baseball, the Celtics and Lakers in basketball, and the Raiders and Cowboys in football.

3. I despise baggy clothes.

4. I tried smoking once when I was about 12. It tasted nasty so I never tried it again.

5. I don't really understand the need to put tattoos all over yourself.

6. I bought a new dictionary a couple of years ago, but my Thesaurus is 30 years old.

7. I find it outrageous that some students think it's acceptible to write formal papers for their classes using texting shorthand or emoticons. Click here for more.

8. One of my pet peeves is the accepted use by sports pronouncers of the term "time outs". This is slang. The proper way to say it is "times out".

Thanks for the tags! I'm trying to catch up on all my outstanding memes.

As always, feel free to steal or borrow if you like.

  1. I love the story of the female athletes. Shows that sportsmanship still lives in the hearts of some athletes.

A Howie Long autographed football?! WOW! I'm envious. Of course, I'd be more envious if it was actually Howie Long himself...*grin*

I'm a baby boomer, too - born in '62. Sigh. Can't believe I just admitted that.

  1. TopChamp says:

These are genuinely interesting facts and they made me smile. I love imagining you stroppily demanding those boots (googled 'em)!

I am glad you have pet peeves too. Mine at the moment is people saying t'internet... Grr. It's from a comedy show I think.

  1. Schmoop says:

Is there another word for, "Thesaurus"? Cheers Trav!!

  1. Liz Hill says:

Thank you so much for sharing a story about true sportsmanship.

Classic uniforms should not be tampered with.

  1. Travis, I saw the story about Mallory Holtman this morning. What a marvelous thing the other team did for her and her team! That is true kindness and goodness! Glad you blogged about it! :D

  1. I saw the story of the softball players on Fox News this morning. True sportsmanship, the best example I can remember.

  1. "I am technically a member of the baby boomer generation, which is classified as any person born between 1946 and 1964. I was born in 1964."

me too trav, i was born in 1946! we are the ying and the yang of the boomers! ha ha ha

    smiles, bee

  1. I loved waffle stompers! I'm a few years older...and a girl...so my feet had stopped growing when they were all the rage. I had several pair over the years.

I find the thought of you and Miz Bee being the bookends of the babyboomers really interesting....in many ways...

  1. The story of Central Washington players is fantastic. Mallory actually asked the ump if it was allowed. I am not sure of the rules, but I do not believe it would have been allowed if The Western Oregon players had carried their team mate.

great memes... it is blasphemous if teachers allow students to use TXT grammar in school.

  1. Sandee says:

I'm a grad of UOP too, but have a BS in Business Management. Took me a long time too.

I don't understand tattoos either and I'm glad I never got one. I always think about how silly these folks will look when they are old.

English should be written properly. I can't imagine teachers allowing this slang in class assignments. Awful.

Have a great day Travis. Here's my slang... :)

  1. Akelamalu says:

Great to read more about you Trav. I'm a baby boomer too but nearer the other end of the scale!

  1. Anndi says:

Some big time athletes could learn a thing or two from those ladies.

You had a thing for boots? *giggles*

  1. Songbird: I love my football, but it would have been great if I could have gotten it signed in person.

TC: I really wanted those boots!

    Matt: Bada bing!

    Turn: Indeed they should not.

Teach: You know, I thought the same thing. What those young women did was more than sportsmanship...it was kind.

Sarge: It was all the more special because it was spontaneous, as that is where true sportsmanship can best be measured.

Bee: That must be why we're both CAKE fiends!

    Katherine: I'm completely jealous!

V: It would not have been allowed if her own team had tried to do it. And if they had put in a runner, they would have changed the home run to a single and completely changed the outcome of the game. And I share your outrage at the use of text symbols and emoticons!

Sandee: I was able to transfer a lot of old credits over, so it took me about 20 months to finish up.

Akelamalu: I just think it's weird that I'm considered a baby boomer.

  1. Travis, thank for doing the meme I enjoyed at as well as the one Jennifer tagged you for.

  1. RW says:

Good stuff Trav! And thanks for the ripple idea!!

  1. There's so much you can learn about someone through tags...

  1. Kimmie says:

More about Travis! Thanks for sharing. You seem very complex to me! :-)
    Smiles,
    Kimmie

  1. Julie says:

You and Miss Bee and CAKE in between! How fun! Thanks for sharing this interesting little tidbits!

  1. j says:

LOVE my Thesarus, but I dont use it enough. There has to be better words for Stuff and Thingy, but I use them a bunch. I use "a bunch" a lot too.

The story of the softball players is so good. Their coaches must be very proud as well - these girls learned more than how to hit catch and throw. They learned how to be kind in life.

    Be blessed.

    Jen

  1. j says:

ahem - Thesaurus. I need to invest in a spelling primer.

  1. Ann: Those were the coolest!

Mike: Sorry to take so long getting to it.

    Leigh: Thanks!

Roger: You are most welcome! That Peace Globe you did is really amazing.

    Terra: Indeed!

Kimmie: I guess I can be!

Julie: CAKE! I don't have any CAKE!

Jennifer: But stuff and thingy can sometimes be the perfect words! And yes, it was the kindness of the action that really stood out.

  1. Unknown says:

    What a precious story...

I love your poetry, and I don't just like any poetry. The interesting thing about that poem is that we seem to come from such different backgrounds with such different believes and yet we agree on so much. I genuinely treasure some of the friends I've met through the Soul Patrol...and you are definitely one of the treasures! (Or at least, Johnny Depp :P)
