Five on Friday Set 4

Several years ago, my stepdad and I were having a discussion about all time great guitarists. Most of my choices were from rock and blues, like Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jeff Beck and Dwayne Allman and BB King. That list can and does go on and on and on. My stepdad knows those names, and doesn't disagree, but he posed a question. Why, he wondered, not a jazz guitarist?

And so he introduced me to the subject of Set 4, the sublime sound of Wes Montgomery (1923 - 1968).

Regrettably, Mr Montgomery died of a heart attack at the age of 45.

    You do have to wonder why jazz guitarists never get named when it comes to All-Time Guitar Greats and the same goes for country guitarists. There are some guys out there in the land of country (and formerly Western) that are true masters with a guitar but they seem to get forgotten, too.

    How Insensitive - easily my favorite from your set, as it was on one of my dad's jazz albums, which often played in my home when I was little.

    My uncle is a jazz guitarist and has a similar buttery-smooth sound.

    Jamie: I must listen to Django Reinhardt.

    Starr: Probably because jazz often isn't as commercial, and the names just don't come readily to mind.

    Akelamalu: He is, isn't he?

    V: When I haven't heard his music for awhile, the thing that strikes me is how smooth he is.

    Linda: Good point about country musicians. There are some really good ones.

    Julia: This is the kind of jazz I enjoy most. I like when I can understand the beat and tempo. and when I can feel the melody. Sometimes jazz gets confusing to my ear.
