First day tournament wrap up

It used to be when a seed lower than 12 beat a seed higher than 5, it was not only a major upset but it was probably done on a buzzer beating last shot. If you scroll down a post or two, you'll see that Murray State did the buzzer beater thing to beat Vandy.

Then there's Ohio University, that pesky 14, that jumped on 3 Georgetown early and walloped the Hoyas wire to wire. I'm telling you, these teams from mid major conferences are not so far behind in the talent department. Whether it's a shot at the buzzer or a full on whuppin', these lower seeds are primed and pumped to get some work done this weekend and higher seeds best take notice.

I gotta call them upsets, because that's what they are if a lower seed beats a higher seed. The casual observer may be shocked, but since the bracket was released I've been listening to pundits call out some of the double-digit seeds as spoilers. And some of those teams are getting it done.

That's the madness baby!

Here are the complete results from Day 1.

7 BYU beat 10 Florida, 99-92 2OT
11 Old Dominion beat 6 Notre Dame, 51-50
2 Villanova beat 15 Robert Morris, 73-79 OT
13 Murray State beat 4 Vanderbilt, 66-65
3 Baylor beat 14 Sam Houston State, 68-59
2 Kansas State beat 15 North Texas, 82-62
10 Saint Mary's beat 7 Richmond, 80-71
5 Butler beat 12 UTEP, 77-59
9 Northern Iowa beat 8 UNLV, 69-66
1 Kentucky beat 16 E Tennessee State, 100-71
14 Ohio University beat 3 Georgetown, 97-83
11 Washington beat 6 Marquette, 80-78
1 Kansas beat 16 Lehigh, 90-74
6 Tennessee beat 11 San Diego State, 62-59
9 Wake Forest beat 8 Texas, 81-80 OT
3 New Mexico beats 14 Montana, 62-57

That's 3 OT games and 7 wins by lower seeds. Five of those 7 were double digit seeds, which is a record for one day.

And the best news is that we get to do it all again tomorrow (or today if you're reading on Friday) with 16 more games!

Thanks for the wrap-up. I only had time to watch two games yesterday, but both were good games. Hope to watch some more today.

So we were right on when we said Butler needed to stick with their game plan while UTEP started to implode. I was impressed by Howard stayed on Caracter inside and didn't get into foul trouble. Round two should be interesting.
