A sonnet for peace

I'm enjoying my vacation. I'm relaxed...and it didn't take long to get to that state at all.

I had just a few goals for this week. One was to recover our living space from the chaos of months of exterior construction. Check! We've got some finishing touches to do, but the place is clean and organized for the first time since last September.

Another goal was to de-stress from the end of the first fiscal quarter at work. Check! I feel calm and comfortable with what I was able to achieve in my work.

And one other goal was to write. Partial check on that. Here's a sonnet I composed today in the Shakespearean rhyming scheme.

I think often of the path toward peace,
And in that thinking my mind cannot grasp
The length and breadth to which it is deceiv'd.
Simple seems my goal and not much to ask.
To put aside enmity; to be one
In this world with those like and not like me.
Yet why do I feel my hope is undone?
Why do I feel adrift in a gray sea?
Can love for all trump fear of difference?
Or is man's future lock'd behind borders?
A sad state indeed, this world lacking sense.
The sameness of man hides beneath cultures.
And so I look inward for my lost way,
Serene in mind if only for today.

Trav: What a beautiful piece. You have an incredible way with language. It's why I still read - to mine hidden treasures such as yours.

Thank you for sharing. It was a rainbow bubble on a cloudy day.

So very much truth in that poem today, Trav. It seems to me that securing peace with our fellowman is the most difficult thing to do and yet, it should actually be quite easy if we would or could just accept all people as they are -members of the human race and all being equal. Instead, we have so many factions quibbling about all kinds of things and unable to see their nose right there in the middle of their faces! Sad to think how petty, how judgmental society has become isn't it?

  1. Very fine. Locked behind borders. Says much.

Three checks for you! I need to relax a bit more too. It's rather stressful at work. I'm thinking a glass of wine and a good book after dinner tonight :)

Apparently de-stressing totally agrees with you as you certainly produced a lovely sonnet. The Bard would be proud!
