Flag Day

Edit:  I had the wrong time on my post.  DOH!

Last year's post for Flag Day says everything I want to say, mainly because it's full of outstanding quotes that others have said.  So I shall repeat myself, with honor and respect to my flag and my country.

I am whatever you make me, nothing more. I am your belief in yourself, your dream of what a people may become.... I am the clutch of an idea, and the reasoned purpose of resolution. I am no more than you believe me to be and I am all that you believe I can be. I am whatever you make me, nothing more. ~Franklin Knight Lane

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. ~Francis Bellamy, The Youth's Companion, 8 September 1892

This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in. ~Theodore Roosevelt

What we need are critical lovers of America - patriots who express their faith in their country by working to improve it. ~Hubert H. Humphrey

We need a type of patriotism that recognizes the virtues of those who are opposed to us..... The old "manifest destiny" idea ought to be modified so that each nation has the manifest destiny to do the best it can - and that without cant, without the assumption of self-righteousness and with a desire to learn to the uttermost from other nations. ~Francis John McConnell

I fly my flag today with pride, with hope, with dignity, and with respect.

  1. I'm still sorting through unread blog posts, so bear with me, my friend.

I have to tell you about my experience in Washington, DC a few weeks ago. The first time I went was 20 years ago, and I had seen many things that moved me; seeing the Vietnam War memorial wall was the most emotionally experience for me. I saw the original star spangled banner, and while it was incredible, it didn't have the impact that that wall did.

This time, the star spangled banner is in a new display case. It can no longer be hung because of its size and age, and now it cannot be photographed either. It is in separate display hall where the lighting is dim. I gazed upon it, and the tear flowed freely and unabashedly. The pride I felt was overwhelming, and I couldn't stop crying. It was the single most memorable thing about my trip to DC, and I shall never forget it nor the feeling I had when I laid eyes on that flag.

Incredible. I hope some day you get to view it, too.
