The Writer's Meme

I think I've done more memes over the last week than I've done since I started this blog. There sure have been some good ones too. I haven't gotten to the goals meme yet, since I'm smack in the middle of achieving a doozy. But that's a story for another day.

Today it's about the Writer's Meme. My darling Turn of As the World Turns tagged me for this one. Well, she didn't really tag me. It's another one of those "I tag everyone" things. I thought it was cool, so I'm giving it a go.

The meme is all about very short stories. We're talking stories of only six words. Here's the meme's instructions, as copied from Turn's blog:

A writer's meme.

Ernest Hemingway said the best thing he ever wrote was a six-word story. It is this:

For sale--
Baby shoes.
Never used.

My challenge to you, Dear Readers and Writers, is to come up with your own six-word story. That's all. Six words. How hard could that be? It'll only take a minute.

How hard could it be? Well, it's easy enough to put six words together. But do they actually tell a story? A story generally has a beginning, middle, and end...with characters and plot and conflict and climax.

Look at the Hemingway piece above. On the surface, just a very simple premise. But underneath? So many questions. Of course...it's Hemingway!

I've tried two. Here they are.

Hearts desire hastily spent.
Bitter feelings.

April passions.
November rain.
Never again.

Here's one more:

A life considered carefully was discarded.

It's tough not to turn them into poetry. But this is a fun exercise. Give it a try.

I've seen this around and it is mighty hard to not produce a poem, especially for me. It depends on how seriously you take it. The six words are meant to represent a whole story not a single thought. When I get around to it, I will be playing too.

I heard Turnbaby is going to collect the best and post a collection of them, so I will definitely be getting to it after finishing up some school work.

Be well and have a great weekend and Easter.

Travis thanks for stopping by. I will go through in the next day or so and find something I can post.

Anyway, here is my six word story. I have chosen to forgo plot as I am often told I do in my longer stories.

But I will be your downfall.

So I'll have to play properly another time. Have fun for easter weekend with it's double bank holiday (LOVE it)!

This is an interesting exercise. (But feels more like a haiku, doesn't it?)

    Here's a first attempt:

Frozen ground, broken shovel; remains unburied.

(By the way, nice to meet another DWTS fan - most people devote their Tuesdays to AI [american idol] while I'm waiting to see whose dancing didn't cut it.) :)

    the best.

This sure is a hard thing to do. I'll give it some thought and post a few soon.

  1. I can't seem to get going on this one. My mind isn't in the game yet; maybe now that Easter is winding down it'll get going again.

Then again, maybe I just need to take a little trip...

    Flew away
    to return home
    renewed.

  1. I gave it a shot on my site. This is hard, but for some reason it has kept me thinking. That Hemingway piece really hit me, it says so much in just six words.

  1. Julie says:

Hmmm just six words....nope can't do it.

    You're good honey!
