Welcome to another Manic Monday with Morgen. Don't forget to cruise by MM HQ at It's A Blog Eat Blog World. Today's theme is Frost.

I grew up in areas of California that don't get snow. In fact, they barely get the full effect of four seasons.

My first winter in Washington was pretty mild. I was in the southwestern part of the state, 30-odd miles from Mt St Helens. We had some ice and frost, but no snow.

My second winter was a little more fierce. I had moved to the greater Puget Sound area and I experienced my first snow that actually stuck to the ground for a day or two. I drove in snow for the first time.

Last winter, I experienced my first blizzard complete with thunder snow. Of course it was nothing like what hits the east and midwest. But it was a big deal here. I got stuck on an icy road for two hours and had to wait until the falling snow built up enough to cover the ice. Then I was able to get the traction to move up a hill and then safely down the hill. Once I got home I got stuck in a snow drift in the driveway of my apartment complex.

It was quite frosty and really beautiful in the full light of day, from the warmth of my apartment, and knowing I didn't have to try and drive in it.

It's kind of hard to tell from these pictures, but there was over a foot of snow on the ground.

The very worst was the freeze that happened after it snowed. We had maybe 4-5 days of sub-freezing temps, and naturally the snow became ice. One day I had a 4" thick sheet of ice in the apartment parking area. I couldn't even back my vehicle out of my space.

It would be nice to have some snow again this winter. I'm much closer to my office this time, so in the worst case I could walk to and from work.

    great pictures!

  1. Yeah, if we don't get a snow pack this year, we're sunk!

Love the photos. Everything looks fresh and clean. My favorite time in the snow was up at Mammoth. The stars are so clear!

    Those pictures are lovely, Trav.

I hope you get a good winter this year. Nothing too extreme!

I LOVE looking out at all of that crystalline purity knowing I don't have to battle it--just enjoy!

OH yeah.....the crispness of winter! I love it...I love all the seasons!

    Great job on FROST honey!

very beautiful. I'm living in Arizona so those pictures and your memory is very inviting to me. Have a great Monday.

  1. Ok. I'm glad you wrote that there was a foot of snow on the ground. B/c I know of people who consider a blizzard an ince of snow only because they usually don't get any!!

    Pretty pictures Trav...

Here's hoping we get snow this year in Arkansas! :)

Photos are nice. If I need a reminder of what snow looks like, I will be back to see these.

It's beautiful, but I don't want to live in snow country. What Amazing Gracie said is so true. We need the snow pack in the high country with great water content. Have a great MM Travis. :)

  1. Ah, more snow pics. We get a lot of snow here in the New Orleans area. It just comes down as pouring rain. It's been "snowing" all day.

  1. Crap Travis...I forgot how prolific you get on the weekends with football...making a note to stop by more often...Sorry my 'Jints did a number on the 49'rs...Liking how Eli is coming along this year....

Pictures are way cool...nicely done..and i remember the story of trying to get up and then down the hill

  1. Living in Tacoma, we barely had winter at all. My son says that I've turned Washington into Northern California just so I'll feel at home. I would love to experience a really wild snowstorm as long as I didn't have to be out in it.

  1. I live in SE King county and remember this event well. It was funny we got 8 inches but Auburn barely had any! WA weather is weird! ;)

Beautiful picturs... but it can be unbearable what frost can do, despite it's beauty, huh? happy MM!

  1. Katherine: Many of my east coast pals would say what I had here was only a "little bit" of winter weather. LOL!

Gracie: The toughest adjustment to the snow for me was still having to go out and do the normal stuff, and it was only for a week. I don't think I'd want to do it for an entire season.

Lizza: I'd be happy with the snow minus the nasty effects of it.

Turn: That's the best way to have snow!

Julie: You'll have to show some pics of your place after a snow.

Bridget: I've been through northern Arizona during winter. It can get a little snowy up there.

Mags: I know you'll be digging out of several feet of snow for several months!

CWM: Anything is possible I say!

  1. Sylvia: I had one of my snow pics up as my desk top throughout winter and most of spring so I could remember what it was like.

Sandee: I'm not sure I could make it through an entire winter with snow on the ground either.

Charles: Yeah - we had that kind of "snow" most of last week too.

V: Gosh...I thought I toned it down this weekend too. LOL!

Jamie: That's the key...not to have to be out in it.

Janice: It smacked us pretty good on the east side.

    Mert: Very true.

Wasn't that a nice little snowfall says the Canuck...

Oooo...I'm getting excited for winter! I hope we have one this year.

  1. I'd settle for no more temps in the 90s.

  1. Ann: I qualified my description cause I knew you'd call me on it. I'm not from snow - it was a blizzard to me.

    Steven: A NY winter...yup, I suspect you'll have one.

Songbird: And a little bit of rain perhaps?
