George Blanda, 1927 - 2010

Raider Nation mourns the passing of another Raider great.  George Blanda died on Monday after a short illness.  He was 83.

We share Mr Blanda with the Bears (1949, 1950-58), the Colts (1950), and the Oilers (1960-1967).  But the final nine years of his career were as a Raider (1967-1975), and that's really all I remember.

Mr Blanda was The Grand Old Man, playing 26 seasons in the NFL until finally retiring at the age of 49.  As a quarterback and kicker, he held the all time scoring record at 2,002 points until it was surpassed by Morten Andersen and Gary Anderson.  He also held the all time interception record of 277, a dubious distinction he finally relinquished to Brett Favre.  He still holds the following NFL records:
  • Passing TD's in a game (7, tied with 4 others)
  • Most seasons played (26)
  • One of two players to play in 4 different decades (Jeff Feagles has also done it)
  • Most PATs made (943) and attempted (959)
  • Most interceptions thrown in a single season (42)
  • Oldest person to play in an NFL game (48 yrs, 109 days)
  • First player ever to score 2,000 points
  • Oldest QB to start a title game
Mr Blanda played in 4 American Football League All Star games, was an All-AFL selection 5 times, and was a 2-time All Pro.  He won the AFL MVP award in 1963 and is a member of the AFL All Time team.  He led the AFL in passing yards twice and in passing TD's once.  He is a 3-time AFL Champion.  (The AFL was in competition with the NFL from 1960-1969, after which the leagues merged.)

Mr Blanda was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1981.

It's encores and results live from Hollywood!

We have brownies!  They are chocolate with chocolate chips.  Brownies are almost as good as CAKE!

What did we like from Monday night?  Well I'll tell you!

We liked the Quick Step from Audrina and Tony.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

We liked the Jive from Margaret and Louis.  It wasn't the best dance of the night, but we appreciated that they danced a proper Jive.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

We liked the Jive from Rick and Cheryl too.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

We liked the Quick Step from Kyle and Lacey.  It was sloppy in places, but we really enjoyed his performance and charisma.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

I have a feeling we're going to be saying this a lot.  Dance of the night goes to the Jive from Jennifer and Derek.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

Here's a reminder of our leader board after Monday's performances:

24 Jennifer and Derek
23 Audrina and Tony
22 Kyle and Lacey
22 Bristol and Mark
21 Rick and Cheryl
21 Kurt and Anna
21 Brandy and Maks
19 Florence and Corky
18 Margaret and Louis
18 Mike and Karina
12 Michael and Chelsie

We start right off with results...Kyle and Lacey are safe.

And the judges select Kyle and Lacey for the encore performance.  If he can polish up his technique and bring the energy under control, he's going to be a force.

Janelle Monae is in the ballroom.  She rocked it on the So You Think You Can Dance stage too.  Click here to see that performance.  I like her!  She's got her own dancers, and she's pretty dang good too.  She's got a bit of James Brown and a little Michael Jackson.  Excellent!

More results...Florence and Corky are safe.  Bristol and Mark are safe.  Audrina and Tony are safe.  Jennifer and Derek are safe.

The Macy's Design-a-Dance will be a Cha Cha Cha.  You can go to the DWTS website to vote for the song, two pro dancers, and a concept.  Then we'll get to see the result on the finale.  Sort of like this...

The Macy's Stars of Dance returns, featuring the choreography of Rich-N-Tone.  The dance had acrobatics and high flying stunts combined with dancing to Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.  I actually did not enjoy it.

Now Seal is in the ballroom accompanied by Cheryl, Chelsie, Kym, and Lacey.

And results...Kurt and Anna are safe.  Margaret and Louis are safe.  Rick and Cheryl are safe.  Brandy and Maks are safe.  Mike and Karina are safe.

That means Michael Bolton is out.

I thought Bruno was out of line with his comments on Monday.  One can deliver an honest critique of the performances without being mean.  Michael isn't a good dancer and his Jive just wasn't very good.  But Bruno was just flat out mean on Monday.  His comments were in appropriate and unnecessarily harsh.

How about one more video?  Way back in Season 2, host Tom Bergeron joined Ashly del Groso for a delightful Quick Step.

Later gang!

It's live from Hollywood!

Welcome to week 2!  Our 11 remaining couples will either dance Jive or Quickstep.

The clip features Joanna Leunis and Michael Malitowski.

I'm sure I can find other excellent clips for Quick Step, but I like Marcus and Karen Hilton.  So I'm sticking with what I like, even though this clip is 12 years old.

Brooke Burke is stunning yet again in basic black.  Or is it navy?  I guess it doesn't matter.  Yeowza!

OK, focus now.

Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke dance Jive.   Rick's career ended on a serious ankle injury, so the quick flick kicks in a Jive could be a struggle.  He's almost at 3/4 tempo during the dance, while Cheryl picks the speed up without too obviously dancing around him.  He continues to have excellent posture.  And he's quite the showman too.  I thought that was really very good.  He had control of it and didn't really miss any steps.  I'm really impressed by what he was able to do in terms of his footwork.  Cheryl's choreography managed to hide the things he couldn't do and emphasized what he could.  His steps were basically sharp and clean.  The difference in their height was barely noticeable.  Judges say 7's across for a total of 21.  That's solid.  The dance didn't have the quick tempo that I like to see in a Jive, but that was a strategic choice to guard against injury.  Very respectable performance and score.

Florence Henderson and Corky Ballas dance Quick Step.  This is going to be tough for her, not so much because of the tempo but because of the stamina needed.  She has to remember the steps, hold her posture, not get dragged through it, and simply manage to get through the entire 90 seconds.  And she's doing OK.  Corky is making excellent use of the quick-slow-quick movement.  Unfortunately, the footwork was just a little sloppy.  Still, they did a proper dance without a lot of cheesy silliness.  There was some of that, but it was charming rather than foolish.  And there were some good moments where she had the elegant carriage and sophistication.  Overall, I think she did well.  I'd like to see her stick around to do a Waltz.  All the elder Ladies and gentlemen should get a chance to Waltz on the show.  Judges say 7,6,6 for a total of 19.  A good score.

Brandy Norwood and Maks Chmerkovskiy dance Jive.  Dangit.  The rehearsal drama is back.  She's a favorite, but we'll withhold our votes if that doesn't stop.  I'd like to see her extend more and finish off the kicks.  The lines she had last week were missing.  This Jive is a bit flat.  The kicks weren't sharp and I didn't think her footwork was very crisp.  She's performing with her face, but I don't like the energy below her neck.  That was really disappointing.  This should have been a dance she could really have a good time with, but I didn't like it.  I don't think I have bigger expectations than she can fill, but I do think she can dance much better than this.  I will say that she connects one move to another very well, although surprisingly her musicality was lacking.  Judges say 7's across for a total of 21.  Pay attention and listen to Maks!  He won't set you wrong.

Michael Bolton and Chelsie Hightower dance Jive.  He has a throat infection and laryngitis this week.  At least he looks like he's enjoying himself this week.  He's starting to loosen up with the steps, although he's still a bit timid here and there.  He's also doing a bit of standing while Chelsie dances around him.  There were spots where the dancing was enjoyable, but more places where it was a bit painful.  The best I can say is that he smiled and performed a bit more, and he tried to do the dance.  It's a shame.  I can tell by the rehearsal footage that he wants to do well, and that he's a perfectionist.  He just doesn't have any natural dance rhythm, and that shows up in a dance like Jive.  Judges say 4,5,3 for a total of 12.  Ouch on the 3.  Bruno borrowed the cranky pants this week.  That's really harsh.  It wasn't a good dance, but there's being honest and then there's being kind.  I would have gone for kindness and made that 3 into a 4.

Audrina Patridge and Tony Dovolani dance Quick Step.  Now she has a great attitude about the dancing.  I had no idea who she was before the show, but I like her.  She looks fantastic in this style.  Her footwork is really crisp and clean.  She had a little form break with her posture, but it was so quick that I only saw it because I was watching at the exact moment.  She seems like she's holding back just a bit, and I'd like to see her have more confidence.  She can really do this.  She was graceful and elegant, and light on her feet.  She's listening to Tony, and that's always the right thing to do.  If she can pull the fans, she's going to be around for awhile.  Good for Tony too!  Judges say 8,8,7 for a total of 23.  That's a great score, but I think it should have been 8's across.

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough dance Jive.  Jennifer has to deal with the weight of expectations now.  I want her to be great every week.  She's got to pace herself through this dance and not throw all the energy into the first half.  Keep in mind...she's 50 years old and recently had a bunch of neck surgery as part of her cancer treatment.  I don't know what I was worried about.  She's fantastic!  She has amazing balance and awareness.  I know she has an advantage, coming from a dance background as well as acting.  But you still have to get it done on the floor, and she's doing that.  I really enjoyed this Jive.  Those spins at the end were just WOW!  She kept the energy and the technique throughout.  And Derek's choreography took advantage of her strengths, with enough difficulty that it didn't matter that he can't do some of the more spectacular tricks with her because of her neck.  Judges say 8's across for a total of 24.  That's a terrific score, but I thought that dance deserved at least one 9.

Margaret Cho and Louis van Amstel dance Jive.  Unlike the Waltz last week, she can afford to be a bit more loose in Jive.  But I want to see a proper dance this week.  She can put a bit of comedic performance in it if it's within the character of the dance.  I don't want her not to be herself, but I also don't want her to be a parody of herself either.  There you go!  She can do it.  That made me smile.  It wasn't perfect.  It had some sloppy moments.  But it also had terrific energy and a fine performance quality to it.  She took it seriously and proved herself on the dance floor.  As long as she continues to take it seriously, she'll improve her technique and the crispness of her movement.  I liked what she did in this Jive, and I appreciate that she did it.  Well done my dear.  And well done Louis for making a proper dance.  Judges say 6's across for a total of 18.  I think maybe that was worth a couple of extra points.

Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer dance Quick Step.  Last week he surprised me with his rhythm, his performance, and his overall musicality.  This week, let's see if he can be light on his feet and elegant.  He is just so full of personality, it's impossible not to like him.  And he is much lighter on his feet this week.  I like the choreography.  Lacey tried to make a younger dance that he could connect with, and I think she was mostly successful.  He's just a charming young man.  What he'll have to do is learn to control his energy so that his movements become smooth and not quite so sloppy.  In the early part of the competition, he's going to be able to overwhelm with personality and performance.  But at some point, he'll have to tighten up the technique.  He's going to get votes because he's just so enjoyable to watch.  But as we move deeper into the show, he'll have to compete technically otherwise the judges' scores will drop him too far behind for the fan vote to keep saving him.  But for now, I like what he's doing.  Judges say 8,7,7 for a total of 22.  A good score.

Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya dance Jive.  I'm worried about awkwardness.  I also should have been worried about silliness.  Or perhaps goofiness.  But he owned the story and the character, so what looked in rehearsal like it was going to be silly or goofy actually became charming and endearing.  Kurt kept his energy up and he had fun with style and choreography.  He impresses me with his gentleness.  And also with his willingness to do this.  He has an innate musicality.  As with his Waltz last week, he managed to keep his shoulders back.  I'd like to see him be more precise with his footwork, but I suspect he'll develop that.  I did not expect him to be able to do this, and I'm pleased to be wrong.  Judges say 7's across for a total of 21.

Mike Sorrentino and Karina Smirnoff dance Quick Step.  I don't like this kid.  I know it's early and he's got a lot to learn, but the turned in toes really turn me off.  His shoulders are too hunched.  Both of those things make the movement look really heavy and plodding.  Quick Step is a really tough dance, and he showed how difficult it was.  He doesn't have any musicality at all.  I'm looking for something positive to say...he did try to hold to the integrity of the style.  He did work at it, and he does seem to listen to Karina.  But he's not as charming or as interesting as he thinks he is.  At least I don't think so.  I'd like to see him tone down the personality.  Instead of his "Situation" character, find the character in each dance style and portray that.  Judges say 6's across for a total of 18.  There's no way that dance should have had the same score as Margaret and Louis.  At least I don't think so.

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas dance Quick Step.  She really needs to relax.  You can see how nervous she is.  But she doesn't need to be because she can do this.  She's a young woman really learning how to be who she is, separate and distinct from her last 2 years in the public eye.  As soon as she understands that she doesn't need to worry about the dancing, she can start to work on the performance side.  I like the precision of her footwork.  She looks elegant, but still a bit too wooden in her facial expressions.  When she learns to ease the tension in her shoulders, she could be onto something special.  This is why I try to set aside all the media hype that goes into constructing celebrity.  Bristol seems like a charming and earnest young woman.  Well done young Lady.  Judges say 7,8,7 for a total of 22.  That's well deserved.

Here's the leader board:

24 Jennifer and Derek
23 Audrina and Tony
22 Kyle and Lacey
22 Bristol and Mark
21 Rick and Cheryl
21 Kurt and Anna
21 Brandy and Maks
19 Florence and Corky
18 Margaret and Louis
18 Mike and Karina
12 Michael and Chelsie

With few exceptions, I like this cast.  Pam and I split votes three ways again.  This week our 11 votes per four phones went to Jennifer, Rick, and Kyle.

You know the drill...results show tonight, encores and results post tomorrow.

Later gang!

A few words about...

Posted: Monday, September 27, 2010 by Travis Cody in

...sex.

First, the disclaimer.  I must advise that I like sex.  My Lady likes sex.  We're fans of it.  So anything I say is completely biased in favor of having lots of it.

Sex isn't bad.  Having sex isn't cheap or dirty.  A woman isn't a whore or a slut because she likes to have sex, and a man isn't a dog because he likes it.

Sex is a perfectly natural expression of attraction between two healthy people.  Sex is fun and it feels good.  Sex between two consenting, willing, and responsible people is wonderful.

Using sex to abuse and control is a bad thing.  Using sex as an expression of power is ugly.  Using sex to exploit is cheap.  Forcing sex on someone who is unwilling to engage in it with you, or is too immature to give adequate consent to you, is a crime.

But consensual sex is not a tawdry thing.  There is no universal application of morality governing human sexuality.  It's nobody's business, but I'll remind you that Pam and I are not married to each other.  Neither of us has ever been married.  Neither of us is interested in having children.  We live together, and have since I bought the condo in 2007.  We've each had numerous previous partners, which we both agree is a good thing because...well, practice is fun!

Neither of us has ever cheated on a committed relationship.  That's our business.  It's our morality.  We are compatible in our desires, in our experiences, and in our love for each other.  We think that's healthy.

But you don't really need to know that, do you?  You'd really rather not know that about us, would you?  Right.  I don't want to know that much intimate detail about you either.  Each to his or her own sexual business.  You mind yours, and we'll mind ours.

As long as you don't intend to abuse, control, exploit, or force, then I advise all and sundry to go out and find a willing, consenting, otherwise unattached partner, get some condoms, and enjoy yourselves!

I think this might be the latest I've ever left it to choose a Set.  Mr DVR handled the programs we were interested in last night, so we spent the evening with Mr iTunes.  Chicago was heavy in the random rotation, but it wasn't until Color My World spun up that I said, "DOH!"

So I offer Chicago for Set 35, including one of my all time favorite songs.  All it needed was a piano, a flute, a hint of percussion, and a simple lyric.

Color My World
written by James Pankow
released in 1970 and 1971 (as a B side both times)

As time goes on, I realize
Just what you mean to me
And now, now that you're near,
Promise your love
That I've waited to share
And dreams of our moments together
Color my world with hope of loving you

Wednesday Wonderings

Posted: Thursday, September 23, 2010 by Travis Cody in

I wonder if anyone in blogland has ever done a weekly feature called Wednesday Wonderings.

I wonder, if I forgot to post my wonderings on Wednesday, and posted them on Thursday instead, do I have to change them to Thursday Thunks, or can they still be Wednesday Wonderings on Thursday?

I wonder why some folks run the water while washing hands, when modern faucet design and liquid hand soaps make it easy and convenient to conserve.  Why not wet hands and turn the water off, lather up, then turn the water back on to quickly rinse off?  Physicians advise that a proper hand washing should consist of at least 30 seconds of vigorous lather.  Imagine the water you conserve if you turn off the faucet during that 30 seconds instead of letting it run?  Try turning the water off when brushing teeth too.

I wonder, if logic and reasoning were taught in our nation's high schools, perhaps as a graduation requirement for all seniors, whether the person who told me the other day that all Raider fans are asshats based on a comment he read on a sports website by a single Raider fan, might have understood that all members of a class of individuals are not represented by the actions of a single member of that class.

I wonder, yet again, why some people think their dislike of something makes them the leading authority on why the thing is bad.

I wonder if there will ever come a day when diversity will be celebrated, rather than hated and feared.

I wonder why having unread emails in my inbox bugs me so much.

I wonder if that's enough wonderings for one Wednesday...I mean thunks on one Thursday.

Cue that theme music...

It's encores and results live from Hollywood!

We liked a lot about last night.  In the past we've tried to post the videos and we've tried just posting links to the clips.  I don't know what works best, so let's try both!

These are the long clips, so you get the introductions and rehearsal footage.  Sorry about that.

For my friend Songbird, here's the Viennese Waltz from Kurt and Anna.  I was pleasantly surprised by this dance.  I had in my mind that Kurt would be awkward, but he wasn't.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

Surprise of the night goes to the Cha Cha Cha from Kyle and Lacey, mainly because I don't know much about the young man.  But he's got a great personality, and he can really perform.  His dancing was pretty dang good too.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

I thought Brandy would be good at this, and she was.  Her Viennese Waltz with Maks was stylish and sophisticated.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

Even before the dancing, Rick Fox was a favorite for me.  I'm glad he can actually do this.  His Viennese Waltz with Cheryl was so elegant and the lines he made were exquisite.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

Of course I'm giving dance of the night to the Viennese Waltz from Jennifer and Derek.  It was an emotional tribute to her relationship with Patrick Swayze.  Plus it was wonderful all by itself.  Click here if the video doesn't play.

So was that enough video for you?  HA!

Santana opens the show, accompanied by our pros.  My wish is for more professional dancing on the results shows this season.  Excellent!

Here's a reminder of our first leader board after Monday's performances:

24 Jennifer and Derek
23 Brandy and Maks
23 Kyle and Lacey
22 Rick and Cheryl
19 Audrina and Tony
19 Kurt and Anna
18 Bristol and Mark
18 Florence and Corky
16 Michael and Chelsie
15 Mike and Karina
15 David and Kym
15 Margaret and Louis

Let's have some results...Michael and Chelsie are safe.  Margaret and Louis are safe.

The band Daughtry is in the ballroom to debut a new single and accompanied by some dancers who are not our pros, but who are still enjoyable.

More results...Jennifer and Derek are safe.  Rick and Cheryl are safe.  YAY!

Santana returns with vocalist India Arie, accompanied by Louis and Karina dancing an amazing Rumba to While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

More results...Audrina and Tony are safe.  Florence and Corky are safe.

Santana returns once more, this time in a duet with Chris Daughtry and joined by Derek, Lacey, Mark, and Chelsie.

And results...Brandy and Maks are safe.  Bristol and Mark are safe.  Kurt and Anna are safe.  Mike and Karina are safe.  Kyle and Lacey are safe.

That means David and Kym are out.

There you have it.  The first elimination is in the books, and Season 11 is off and dancing.

Tune in next week!

Later gang!

It's live from Hollywood!!

Welcome to the premier of Season 11!!

We had our cheese and bread.  We've got our nice bottle of Merlot.  We've had our CAKE!  We are ready!!

I can immediately report that co-host Brook Burke is looking fantastic in purple.  As much as I love the LEGSSES, I also appreciate excellent cleavage...and she has it!

Tonight our pairs try either a Cha Cha Cha or Viennese Waltz.  Here's how the pros do it.

I always fall back on Marcus and Karen Hilton to demonstrate a Viennese Waltz.

And how about Brian Watson and Carmen Vincelj for a Cha Cha Cha demonstration?

Let's see how our celebrities do.

Audrina Patridge and Tony Dovolani dance Cha Cha Cha.  They worked on choreography for several weeks, but then Tony found out they drew first up.  So he changed some of the choreography and took a risk, starting her on the floor by herself with a little solo.  She's a little timid, but that's to be expected going first I think.  She settled in as the dance went on.  She's got the basic rhythm, but she seemed kind of graceless in her legs.  I liked her hip action.  She's gorgeous, so there's that going for her.  She also has some talent.  I think Tony has a good partner with a great attitude.  She just needs to relax and understand that she has what it takes, and trust Tony.  I thought she was very personable.  I like her.  Judges say 6,7,6 for a total of 19.  Hmmm...my first slight disagreement.  I thought that was worth at least a couple of 7's.

Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya dance Viennese Waltz.  Well he certainly drew the right style to begin.  I think a Latin style might have been a bit of a disaster.  This allowed him to slow down and concentrate on his footwork.  I appreciate that he's dancing to his height.  He's a tall man and he's not hunching over.  I'm pleasantly surprised, because my perception of Warner as a QB has been of a guy who is a step away from tripping over his own feet.  But he had some grace in this dance.  He took control and led Anna through it, which isn't easy for the male celebrities to figure out this early.  He certainly has a lot of room to improve.  But in his favor, he was confident and seems very genuine.  He clearly has work to do on his feet and his posture.  But he smiled and enjoyed himself.  Judges say 7,5,7 for a total of 19.  I think the 5 is low.  It didn't take long for Len to put on the cranky pants.

Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer dance Cha Cha Cha.  The kid has a boat load of personality.  And he's a performer.  But he's carrying some excess weight.  I think he'd do well to take a page out of Warren Sapp's book and try to lighten his step just a little.  The beginning of the dance was a bit rushed and clunky.  And there were parts throughout the routine that looked sloppy, but the young man can dance.  I'm impressed.  He really captured the cheekiness of a good Cha Cha Cha.  If his young fans are paying attention, he's going to be around for awhile.  And he'll pick up some older fans too.  I loved the performance.  It was full of fun and energy.  Lacey gave him some terrific youthful choreography.  And Len said he liked it!  Judges say 8,7,8 for a total of 23.  Great score!

Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke dance Viennese Waltz.  The height issues could be a problem.  He has to remember not to hunch, and let her dance up to him.  Oh he is graceful and elegant.  His lines are so good.  His footwork is clean.  He's staying tall.  This dance is really impressive.  He stayed tall and kept his frame.  Oh my gosh that was so good.  That dance was sophisticated.  I don't want to throw too much hyperbole, but that's got to be one of the best first dances I've seen.  I couldn't really find anything to pick on, and the judges really couldn't either.  I'm so glad he can do this!  He's one of my early favorites and it would suck to vote just because he's a former Laker.  Now I can vote for him because he's a dang fine ballroom dancer!  Judges say 8,7,7 for a total of 22.  Huh?  They uniformly praised the dance and threw 7's?  I think that should have been 8's across.

Margaret Cho and Louis van Amstel dance Viennese Waltz.  The tattoos bother me, but at least they were covered during the dance.  Her facial expression was more like she was dancing the Paso than a Waltz.  And I did not like those gold wing thingies.  I want a Viennese Waltz to be an elegant thing, not a comedy.  I'm surprised that Louis did this.  That choreography made her seem like a joke.  I know her thing is comedy, but I felt disrespected.  I think she could have done the dance straight and been successful.  She has more grace than she gave herself credit for, and there just wasn't any need to cover it up with that kind of foolishness.  I'm not happy about Louis' choice here.  The choreography and performance were just annoying.  She had a chance to exercise some demons, but she chose instead to play it for a gag.  Judges say 5's across for a total of 15.

Brandy Norwood and Maks Chmerkovskiy dance Viennese Waltz.  I like her, before she even takes a step.  She's beautiful and sweet.  Throw in the natural grace and elegance, and I'm smiling for Maks.  He's got a partner with whom he can win, who doesn't seem like the ringers he's had in the past.  This is a beautiful and sophisticated dance.  It has elements of the fairy tale to it.  They look terrific together.  Her lines were excellent.  She had a couple of mis-steps, but nothing to be too concerned about.  I'm jazzed because two of my pre-show favorites are good at this!  Judges say 7,8,8 for a total of 23.  Again I think that's low...I think it should have been at least 8's across.  She's so cute with her reaction!  I'm going to enjoy her this season.

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas dance Cha Cha Cha.  Well.  I was going to say that she's a little insecure, but then she threw the hips out there.  And she flirted with Mark.  She played the character pretty well.  She was a little stiff in some parts of the dance.  But you know what?  She didn't make any major errors with the choreography.  She got the steps and the character.  She was nervous, but she got through it.  I think she can do the dancing.  Her biggest thing is going to be learning to perform.  She has to let her smile be more real, rather than the plastered on I-have-to-be-in-front-of-the-camera-while-my-mom-is-making-this-speech smile.  I think she did pretty well for having no performance experience at all.  Good for you young Lady!  Judges say 6's across for a total of 18.

Florence Henderson and Corky Ballas dance Cha Cha Cha.  She's 76 years old y'all and she's shakin' that booty.  She's in pretty good shape too.  I loved it!  You have to applaud the old broad for getting out there and doing that as well as she did.  She's a bit of a hot Nana.  Of course she's not going to be great with technique, and there are going to be some awkward moments and some things she just won't be able to do.  Her strongest asset is going to be performance.  And Corky is a great partner.  She has fun and brings the audience onto the floor with her.  I hope we get to see her do at least one ballroom style.  I think she earned that because she took a cheeky dance and made it cheekier, whereas I thought Ms Cho took an elegant dance and made it a joke.  Judges say 6's across for a total of 18.

Michael Bolton and Chelsie Hightower dance Viennese Waltz.  Gosh, he's in the middle of touring while he's doing this.  In rehearsal footage, he was really hunched over.  He's still got some of that lean in his upper body, but you can see how hard he has worked on it.  He is not graceful, and it's clear that he's not leading Chelsie.  That's OK, because he's not really making any mistakes with his steps.  He's just not elegant.  I do applaud him for getting through it though.  The rehearsal footage clearly showed how far out of his element he was.  He's got so much to learn about technique.  The one thing he does have going for him is musicality.  So he'll have to relax, trust the steps, and have some fun.  Judges say 6,5,5 for a total of 16.

Mike Sorrentino and Karina Smirnoff dance Cha Cha Cha.  Unlike the rest of the celebrities, Mike has only had a week to learn the first choreography.  To his credit, he did OK for only 5 days of rehearsal.  And he didn't disrespect the ballroom.  He was relaxed and confident, which helped him get through the dance.  There is some potential there, although I think he's going to have issues with his feet because he is very pidgeon-toed.  The dancing was a kind of sloppy for the most part, and the movements weren't really connected and smooth.  It's unclear whether that was just because he didn't have enough time to rehearse.  There's a little too much personality for my taste, but I'm not going to hold that against the young man.  That's evidently what made him a celebrity.  Len put him in his place a bit, so we'll see how things go from here.  Judges say 5's across for a total of 15.

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough dance Viennese Waltz.  Nobody puts Baby in a corner!  Yeah, I can't promise that'll be the last time you see that.  Heheheheheheheee!  Naturally they gave her a song from Dirty Dancing and she had an emotional overload, remembering Patrick Swayze.  Ahhhhh.  Absolutely beautiful.  Lovely smooth lines.  Classy, romantic, elegant, and sophisticated.  And emotional.  They told a wonderful story together, that developed into a tribute to her relationship with Patrick.  I love that she and Derek allowed that onto the floor.  It made the performance that much more special.  I'm so glad to see Jennifer Grey on this show and dancing with Derek.  Judges say 8's across for a total of 24.

David Hasselhoff and Kym Johnson dance Cha Cha Cha.  I found that awkward and kind of creepy.  I can't even describe it.  The footwork wasn't very good.  For a singer, he really had very little musicality.  I never thought you could say this about a Cha Cha Cha, but it was too much cheek.  Cho played it as a joke, Florence was charmingly cheeky, but The Hoff was just bizarre.  Judges say 5's across for a total of 15.

Here's our very first leader board of the season:

24 Jennifer and Derek
23 Brandy and Maks
23 Kyle and Lacey
22 Rick and Cheryl
19 Audrina and Tony
19 Kurt and Anna
18 Bristol and Mark
18 Florence and Corky
16 Michael and Chelsie
15 Mike and Karina
15 David and Kym
15 Margaret and Louis

I'm happy!  We enjoyed most of the performances.  A few of the celebrities surprised us...some to the good and some to the not so good.

Pam and I are in sync.  We loved Jennifer & Derek, Rick & Cheryl, and Brandy & Maks.  We split votes among the three of them.

Tune in tonight when we eliminate our first pair, and check back here tomorrow for the usual encores and results!

Later gang!

Constitution Day, 17 Sept 1787

Last Friday was Constitution Day, which celebrates the ratification of the governing document of the United States on 17 September 1787.

Remember School House Rock?  Remember the little song that helped you memorize the preamble to the Constitution?  It helped me memorize the words, but it took a lot longer for me to understand the meaning of those words.

The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America

We the people of the United States, in order to
  • form a more perfect union,
  • establish justice,
  • ensure domestic tranquility,
  • provide for the common defense,
  • promote the general welfare, and
  • secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,
do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America.

That's just the first sentence.  The Constitution goes on to spell out our rights and responsibilities.  It describes the way we elect the people who will represent our voices in the chambers of government.  It establishes what those chambers will be called, how they will be organized, and what the duties of those chambers are.

And because our society grows and evolves over time, our Constitution has been amended 27 times to clarify certain rights, freedoms, and responsibilities.

If you've never read the document, I encourage you to do so.  We should all confirm that what we believe we know about our rights and responsibilities, and the way our government works, is accurate.  You can find it easily on line.  Or you can click here.  These are the contents:

Article I outlines the Legislative Branch
Article II outlines the Presidency
Article III outlines the Judiciary
Article IV deals with States rights
Article V describes the amendment process
Article VI spells out the legal status of the Constitution
Article VII explains ratification of the document
The Bill of Rights includes the first 10 amendments
Amendments 11 through 27

The power of football

You'll hear a lot of cliches about the game of football.  But I've never heard the power of the game expressed more clearly than this...

"You take this kid from south central Los Angeles and bring him to Atlanta, GA, and take another child from the mountains of north Georgia, and they've been raised very differently, probably raised to hate each other.  And you make 'em sweat in the same color shirt.  And they come in and out of that locker room, and they pull that nasty jersey off enough times, and it starts to dawn...that sweat smells about the same on everybody.  And I get busted in my mouth and my blood's the same color as my brother here.

And a miracle happens and I call it the miracle of team.  It's why I do what I do.  Those two guys raised to hate each other become brothers and they love each other, and it lasts for the rest of your life."

Our summer viewing pleasure in review

Back at the beginning of June I ran down the programs we were looking forward to during the summer.  Here's the recap.

My Lakers won another NBA championship!

We're still catching up with True Blood.  We're not really enjoying it all that much, but I'm hoping the last few episodes will pick up.

Top Shot was enjoyable.  I could have done without the silly drama between the competitors, but the guy who won was decent enough.  The final challenge was well designed for maximum tension and came down to the final couple of shots.

Lie To Me was outstanding!  Tim Roth leads a really excellent ensemble.

White Collar...damn that show!  There just aren't enough episodes.  And now I have to wait until January to find out if Mozzie makes it!  Dammit!

So You Think You Can Dance came to a somewhat predictable but very satisfying conclusion, with Lauren Froderman walking away as the Season 7 champion.

I really enjoyed Hot In Cleveland.  And it has been picked up for another season, so I've got my eyes peeled for the return.

USA Network has a winner with Burn Notice.  I missed the first couple of seasons, so I'll look for those on DVD.  At least we only have to wait until November for this one to return.

We found some other fun shows we enjoyed too like Warehouse 13 (campy and fun) and Haven (spooky) on SciFi Channel, and Covert Affairs (Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham are terrific) on USA Network.

So now we've got to check out the new season of TV.  And you know first up we've got the premier of Dancing with the Stars on Monday!!  Here's some of the other programs we're checking out:

  • Castle (ABC):  We like the chemistry between Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic.
  • Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC):  The cast looks interesting, and I'll usually check out a new cop drama and give it a chance.  I'm always looking for another show that's as good as I thought Homicide: Life on the Street was.
  • Hawaii Five-O (CBS):  We'll check this one out.  It's a cop drama, and it's based on what I think is one of the all time cop dramas.  Plus we like Scott Caan, who plays Danno.
  • NCIS (CBS):  This is a favorite.
  • NCIS Los Angeles (CBS):  We were a little disappointed in this show, but we'll give the second season a chance.
  • The Defenders (CBS):  I'm not much for lawyer shows, but this one has Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell, so we'll at least give it a look.
  • The Mentalist (CBS):  This is a favorite we'll return to.  When we last left Patrick Jane, he had been in the room with the serial killer Red John.
  • Blue Bloods (CBS):  It's another new cop drama.  This one brings Tom Selleck back to series television, so we'll check it out.
  • The Event (NBC):  No more Lost and no more Flash Forward.  So NBC has their entry into the "it looks like we're just making shit up as we go" genre.  This show will be on a very short leash.
  • Glee (FOX):  We don't really watch it that closely.  Mostly we fast forward through the program and stop on the musical numbers.
  • Lie To Me (FOX):  Sweet!  It returns in November and moves to Wednesday.
  • Human Target (FOX):  Definitely looking forward to the return of this show.  This show is made by the cast of Mark Valley, Chi McBride, and Jackie Earle Haley.
OK.  That's quite a bit of series programming.  Good thing we have the DVR!

I appreciate harmony.  I'm drawn to it.

Oh I like rock music, and some country music, and definitely music from the theatre.  I like guitars and drums and orchestras.  I like fine voices, male and female.  I like good lyrics, and songs with stories, and metal, and oldies, and classical, and strings.

I like music.

But play me great vocal harmonies and you just might stop me in my tracks.

So I offer The Fifth Dimension for Set 34...fantastic harmonies!
